Answered Bulk edit content type in library?

  • viernes, 25 de febrero de 2011 0:54

I have a library with multiple content types. My users frequently upload multiple documents at once. All documents will be assigned to a default content type. How can I bulk edit it? I don't see an option to do it in a datasheet view (unable to show the content type column). Thanks!

I am pretty sure that this cannot be done in SP2010. Seems like others have been having the same issue with no resolution http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010general/thread/b9e0d1ba-318b-4449-abf9-65e526ebc024/

It cannot be done but you could try http://en.share-gate.com/ , I used it with couple of my clients, works really well.

Here is what I did, which is better than saying "It can't be done".

Create a temp library, add the content type you wish to switch to.  Remove the default Document type so that only the one content type exists.

Move all of your documents to the new library using Windows Explorer view.

Move them back to the original library using Windows Explorer view.

They will have the new content type.

Hi thanks for this, we also found a way but we had to pay for it, but was easier for our users than some other methods we found..
www.qipoint.com, its called Batch Edit and Check In.. dunno if that will work for u but worked for us and so far has great support

WTF...You can definitely edit content type in datasheet view, its just picky. If I remember right it needs to be the first column of the datasheet view.

Nice, what a crazy factoid.  Yes, you have to make it the first column.  Better than my method.

But what about a library that has an approval system in place?

It seems to me like the only way to change the type is through tedious work.

The "first column trick" does not work, at least now (SP2010 SP1 + April CU)...

EDIT: The trick works only with Office 2010, not Office 2007. At least now we have a workaround...

I can modify the content type in datasheet view if I make the content type the first column in the view.

However I note that if the original content type is "folder" then you are not allowed to change the content type to a content type that inherits from folder.

I can change the content type via "edit properties" from "folder" to "custom folder"

Then in datasheet view I can change "custom folder" back to "folder"

However I cannot change "folder" back to "custom folder" through datasheet view.
