Network Not Found error when checking in

    Pregunta

  • I've been getting this "Network Not Found" error when I check in a file. I check in a file and get a "SourceSafe Command Status" dialog that says "Adding file $/.../MyFileName..." and then after about 10 seconds I get a dialog saying "Network not found.".

    I've found the post "http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/vssourcecontrol/thread/c05f352d-8554-4346-9b9e-db3f5641a64e/" but I couldn't understand any problems with my ss.ini files on the pc.

    I've got two ss.ini files under the ...Program Files\Visual SourceSafe 6.0\VSS\users directory. One in an admin folder and another in a guest folder.

    Admin folder ss.ini...

    ; ss.ini
    ;
    ; This file contains all the variables that "customize" SourceSafe to your
    ; particular needs. The ss.ini variables are documented in the SourceSafe
    ; User's Manual. Only a few of them are placed in this file by default.

    ; C programmers should remove the semicolon from the following line, to
    ; un-comment it. Other programmers REPLACE the line with different masks.
    ; Relevant_Masks = *.c, *.h, *., *.asm

    ; The following line prevents you from being asked for a checkout comment.
    Checkout_Comment = -

    ; Your current SourceSafe project.
    Project = $/
    mssccprj = *.sln, *.vbproj, *.vbp, *.csproj, *.vcproj, *.dsp, *.mdp, *.mak, *.vfpproj, *.vdp, *.vdproj, *.dbp, *.vsmproj, *.vsmacros, *.hwproj, *.etp, *.etpproxy, *.actproj, *.atp, *.dmp, *.mdmp, *.dsw
    SS_Version = 6.0c
    Warn_NoPassword = No

    Guest folder ss.ini...

    ; ss.ini
    ;
    ; This file contains all the variables that "customize" SourceSafe to your
    ; particular needs. The ss.ini variables are documented in the SourceSafe
    ; User's Manual. Only a few of them are placed in this file by default.

    ; C programmers should remove the semicolon from the following line, to
    ; un-comment it. Other programmers REPLACE the line with different masks.

    ; The following line prevents you from being asked for a checkout comment.
    Checkout_Comment = -

    ; Your current SourceSafe project.
    Project = $/

    I thought it might be something to do with the "Project = $/" but I can't find anything in a search that indicates what it is.

    Does anyone have any ideas? Any help most appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Could you share your srcsafe.ini file content? What login you use to do the check in operation? Could you find the ss.ini file underneath your login folder and share with me the content?

    Could you backup your original ss.ini and use this instead to see if issue persist?

    You could test to create a new testing VSS database, and use its srcsafe.ini.

    You could backup or rename your existing srcsafe.ini and replace with this testing DB one and see if issue persist. The point with above test is to see if there is any invalid path entry in your ss.ini or srcsafe.ini that would cause “network not found” error.

    If none of above test helps, please share us your srcsafe.ini file and your login folder’s ss.ini file

    Are you using virtual machine to host the VSS database using virtual machine for client? Are you able to test without virtual machine, do you still see same error?

  • Hi Duke,

    Check out the thread here and see if it helps:
    http://www.dotnetmonster.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/vs-net-vss/396/Network-not-found

    Meanwhile, I recommend you use a SourceSafe remote access add-on tool, like SourceAnywhere for VSS, for internet access to VSS DB. It's much faster and secure and it integrates with Visual Studio well.

  • Sorry for the delayed response on this. I eventually solved the issue. The problem seemed to be with the ini files on the SS server. I was modifying the ini files local my machine. I removed loads of old entries in the ini files on the server machine that referenced invalid paths and the problem went away.

    Thanks for the input everyone.
