Various problems when downloading and setting up the SQL Server Denali CTP3 Demo VHD

    Debate general

  • Just thought I would post this topic publically in case others have the similar troubles with the SQL Server Denali CTP3 Demo VHD download.

The Denali CTP3 VHD download is available here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27253

It allows you to try out Denali on a HyperV system to save you time of installing Windows and SQL. I used this page to attempt to download the 36 files, but I had various troubles with that experience. Here are some tips.

    1. File download is painful didn't save too much time here

When using IE I found clicking the 36 downloads is painful. IE would only download a few of the large files at a time, and my future clicks on the Download button did "nothing". This is because of the limits of concurrent downloads, so you have to wait for some downloads to finish before starting the new ones.

There is an IE registry change available in this article to allow more concurrent downloads, but I don't think I would go as high as 36 for fear of bring my network card to full capacity and slowing my hard drive to a crawl.

    MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
    MaxConnectionsPerServer

Maybe go to 10 download connections if you are brave. The downloads may take a long time (bottlenecks on your internet bandwidth) when you do more in parallel, but at least you can click it and forget it.

There is an IE addin to help manage many downloads, as someone had blogged about here, leveraging a 3rd party IE add-in. I don't know the vendor myself, so use at your own discretion. http://www.bidn.com/blogs/JoseChinchilla_SQLJoe/ssas/2213/download-all-sql-server-denali-ctp3-demo-vhd-36-files-at-once

    2. File download corruption failures. WinRar extraction fails with CRC failed error

After I got the 36 files, I tried to run the self extracting .exe to extract the files. It failed in the middle and said "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation" the the details says "CRC failed in Virtual Hard Disks\DenaliCTP3ImageX.vhd"

Each file from part 1- part 35 should be 716,800 KB in size. If one of the files is smaller that is a clue that it is probably incomplete. If your files are the same size, try to determine which one is the cultprit.

    Two options

A> Note the file just after the red error such as "CRC failed in Virtual Hard Disks\DenaliCTP3ImageX.vhd". The next file is the likely culprit.

For example, I saw the red error and I found the next file *Part25.rar in the list was corrupted, so I redownloaded just that single file and was able to continue.

B> There is a 3rd party tool some bloggers have had success with to check the part files for their checksum to find the file corruption. I am not familiar with that software, so use at your own risk. http://virtualizesharepoint.com/2010/12/17/crc-failed-in-2010-7bvirtual-hard-disk2010-7b-vhd/

    3. Visual Studio trial expired

Once I got the files extracted successfully, I imported the VHD by doing the Import in HyperV manager and pointing to the folder where the config.xml file was extracted to. It imported without trouble.

I edited the VM settings to check the amount of RAM it used, and I had to lower that amount since my host machine did not have 10 GB available.

I started the VM and it booted. I had to OK on the Windows EULA agreement to get to the desktop. Some warnings about Genuine Windows appear, since this copy is not activated.

I tried to use BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio) but it failed with the error "Your Microsoft Visual Studio evaluation period has expired You can get a key to extend your trial by registering this copy of Microsoft Visual Studio online. "

BIDS itself uses the same shell as Visual Studio. BIDS and Visual Studio 2010 share the same GUI shell to edit BI projects and other VB.Net or C# development Projects: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe"

Visual Studio 2010 Pro trial edition was preinstalled on this demo VHD but apparently the terms on that trial has ended, and you either have to renew the trial or get past the failure.

A> So I didn't have this VM on the internet, but I supposed I could have clicked the button to register the copy if I wanted to.

B> If you have an MSDN or other available volume license subscription which includes Visual Studio 2010, you could utilize the Product key using the terms of that licensing and provide a key for use this in the VM for development trials you may want to do.

C> I don't need anything from C# or VB.Net so I willl just uninstall Visual Studio 2010. To use the BI features in SQL (like designing Reporting services reports, Analysis Services cube, Intergration Services packages) you don't need VS 2010 Pro. You just need the BIDS shell that comes with the SQL Server Denali trial.

To get BIDS to work, it takes about 5 minutes to uninstall Visual Studio 2010 Pro on the Virtual Machine.
Go to the Start Menu > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program
In the list of programs, Select "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional - ENU " and click Uninstall/Change.
When the Maintenance Mode screen appears, click "Uninstall" and Next.

After the uninstall completes, launch BIDS again from the start menu. You can choose the option "Business Intelligence Settings" when prompted for choosing Default Environment Settings.

    4. Please add your own help topics if you have troubles getting started with the CTP3 VHD virtual machine.

Please start separate threads for actual problems if you need to troubleshoot, and post the solutions here once it is figured out for the benefit of others.

Best Regards and happy Denali trials! Jason

  • 5. There is a ReArm script on the desktop to reset the Windows trial and get rid of the Activation and Geniune errors.

Close MS Word if its open ( to close the EULA.docx that opens up automatically)

Right click on the desktop file ImageX-System-Rearm.ps1

    Choose "Run with Powershell"

When the script runs, confirm Y - yes to rearm the system.

It will prompt you to restart the system. If you are ready, Y to do that, or N to postpone that.

Upon restart you will be prompted to agree to the trial EULA again.

6 Here's a getting started tutorial for the HyperV Networking

This helps for getting the VM configured so you can demo the Project Crescent report server website.

    Thx, Jason

  • My problem is that http://intranet.contoso.com/ gives me three prompts to log in (I enter administrator - pass@word1 each time) and then it fails with a completely blank page.  Is there anything I need to do to get the intial page to load?  I was getting 404 initially and so setup a hosts entry to point to the correct IP.  Beyond that not sure why the login seems to be failing?

    Thanks.

  • All,

Turned out I needed to disable the loopback using regedit.  Beware if you are running the VHD you'll probably need to do this  (not sure why it wasnt already done on the VHD.)  Maybe MS has a different way of dealing with this now?  The below link to a registry change fixed the problem I was seeing.

  • Hi DCB,

From what I understand, adding an internal network card should have prevented that kind of error, with the internal network ip being 192.168.150.1 (it should be there by default).

    As Pej blogged here...

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oneclickbi/archive/2011/09/08/getting-started-with-the-sql-server-denali-ctp3-image.aspx

You are probably beyond that by now though.

    Thx, Jason

I need to download again the corrupted file SQLServerCodeNameDenaliCTP3.part20, but now the download page seems to have vanished.

  • I also need to download some of the missing files and it seems that the whole download page is missing.  Will it be coming back?

    Thanks

  • HI Jason,

One more question for you - in your post above you mention to run the rearm script, reboot, login and accept the eula.  I'm able to do everything you mentioned but accepting the eula isnt an option.  It just comes up as a word document and thats it.  No option to accept the eula...please advise.

    Thanks.

  • 1. Re: Missing files

I learned the CTP3 VHD Demo download was taken down intentionally, but the SQL team is working to get a replacement up soon.  This was done not because there was a particular problem with the demo VHD itself, but something wrong in the download delivery mechanism itself. The powers at be are working to repackage the files and put them up again.

Sorry about the confusion over the dead download link.

    2. @DBC99

If I recall, one agreement is presented by the Windows itself, as you boot the VM and Windows initializes, you have to Accept the options that windows shows since it is a demo copy of Windows too, to get the Windows login going, then once the login desktop appears with the Word document itself is available with the details.

I can't remember the exact wording, and can't redo my own machine for fear of losing my time invested, but it was before the desktop appears.

    Thanks, Jason

  • The new Rar files for the SQL Denali CTP3 VHD are at this link.

    NEW LINK: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27740

They are packaged slightly differently than before, without the self extracting .exe as the first part.

I doubt these rar parts's are interchangeable with the old ones, so I imagine if you found the prior download couldn't unzip (ie. file download corruption), you would need to start over and grab all 36 files. Try it if you want, to download the missing part, and let me know if they are interchangeable. I didn't have time to test the RAR unzip yet and my own HD has filled up after all the testing.

    Best Regards, Jason

  • No there isn't a way to change the trial that I know of. Not sure if rolling back days on the clock works or not. Sorry its not  something I built, so I can't change the files myself, but I was trying to help others by starting this thread.

SQL Server 2012 RTM is out partially, and becomes availble soon http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-releases-to-manufacturing-sql-server-2012/12116?tag=mantle_skin;content

Evalution edition is ready for download for MSDN subscribers already at http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29066 and volume license sites soon on April 1.

    Thanks, Jason
