Visual Studio 2005 (2008 installed too) + Visual Source Safe 2005, on Windows 7 64 bit - Trying to Save a checked out Reporting Services .RDL, gives error 'Operation could not complete'
When I try to save the .rdl in VS2005, the title bar of Visual Studio changes to 'Not responding', there's a lonnnnnggggg pause... and then it says 'Operation could not complete' and a dialog popup appears showing me the checked out folder and allowing me to click Save or Cancel. If I click Save again, the same happens again, with a gap between 5 seconds and 30 seconds, and normally errors out again. However, after (on average) about 6-9 save attempts, it will then succeed, after a pause of upto 2 minutes. As you can imagine, it takes an eternity to get any work done.
I'm expecting this is a DLL issue. Could be because I've got both VS2005 and VS2008 on the same machine.. or possible VS Source Safe 2005 doesn't like Windows 7??
Everything is service packed up (Source Safe even has that patch to improve compatability with VS2008)
There is 1 article in the forum referring to VS2003, Visual Source Safe, and the 'Operation could not complete', but it's dated around 2005 and refers to MDAC dll's, so I'm reluctant to follow the advice as I doubt it applies to Windows 7.. Any ideas please??

Is this problem only happen on .rdl files or else? do you know when this happen? have you installed the VS2005 SP1 for Vista?
I only know SQL2005 is not compatible with Win7, not sure if VS2005 has problem with it.
Sincerely,
Wesley

"Is this problem only happen on .rdl files or else?"
As far as I know, only on .rdl's, but possibly on any VS project.
"do you know when this happen?"
Well, only with .RDL so far.
"have you installed the VS2005 SP1 for Vista?"
Yes.
"I only know SQL2005 is not compatible with Win7, not sure if VS2005 has problem with it."
Hmm, not heard of SQL2005 not being compatible - do you mean the tools or the server? I have the SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 tools installed on this machine too. I have noticed that when using SQL2008 Management Studio to administer our SQL servers, if I right click a View and try to 'Edit the top 200 rows', it does the same 'Not responding' thing for 20 or so seconds, before opening up the correct window. This also leads me to believe something isn't right when installing both SQL 2005/2008 Management Studio or/and VS2005/VS2008 on the same machine - but I am led to believe this should not be an issue. - Hi,
I believe the answer is yes to both, but looking at the About pages in each Management Studio it's hard to immediately tell. Your link 404'd for me by the way.
Thanks for planning to look in to it - it takes about 2 whole days to prep this pc, so I'm reluctant to nuke and start again, methodically testing this as I install at each stage.. a solution will be very helpful.

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.1.7600.16385
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.4927
Operating System 6.1.7600 - BTW, the checked out .RDL's exist on a network share which I have full admin rights to, so they are not local. Since they are checked out already and thus not read-only, I'd surprised there is any issue trying to save them. I can't see how Visual SourceSafe can be involved really, so it looks like a simple issue where VSC2005 can't save to a network share.
AHA! I just proved it - I saved to my C: and there was zero delay. So, it's upset at using a network share. Any ideas? I've got a feeling this is related to Windows 7. - In case it helps, the path I am trying to save the checked out .rdl back to is:
"P:\SBO\ssrs\SBO Reports\SBO Reports"
Now that I think about it, I do recall Visual SourceSafe being upset with us hosting the SourceSafe database on a network share - this only started after we moved to Windows 7. I remember my colleague got some weird errors, but I think my issues resolved after I installed that last SourceSafe SP and patch for VS 2008 - I might be wrong though, and the initial issue might still be there. Ring any bells? - I tried saving the file to a different drive letter, and it saved immediately. I believe the issue is that VS2005 Reporting Services doesn't have success when trying to overwrite the old file of the same name in the checked out path I mentioned, having about a 10% success rate.
BTW, you have to wait at least 20 seconds before trying to Save again, otherwise it comes up with the error immediately.- Edited byRyan Dev Tuesday, October 13, 2009 1:29 PM
Correction to above for clarity (forum won't let me edit post):
"I tried saving the file to a different network drive letter, and it saved immediately."- Further breakthrough! In the Save dialog, I deleted the old file, before clicking Save. As I hoped, after a 2 second delay, it Saved!! Woohoo!
I then took this a stage further:
Tried to overwrite the file I had previously saved on my C: drive = Success.
Tried to overwrite the file I had previously saved on another network mapped drive = Success.
Tried to overwrite the file in a checked out project folder = FAIL.
Tried to delete the file above, before Saving again = 10 second delay, and then Success!
Workaround: Delete the file beforehand, and then Success (2 out of 2 attempts). - Hi,
The problem has miraculously disappeared - I believe the culprit was Kaspersky Antivirus Technical Preview for Windows 7. Saves are now instant. That explanation does seem the likely cause.- Marked As Answer byRyan Dev Wednesday, October 28, 2009 11:07 AM
