Work Item Editor State Can Not Be Found

Hello,

I've searched throughout the forums and the web, and have seen many discussions on this issue, but none of the suggested workarounds have worked.

My experience is as follows:
I'll be working through the Web UI, then (usually after being left idle for some time), when I click on a work item, a new window pops up that displays the higlighted message 'Work Item Editor State Can Not Be Found', with no additional information about the work item.

My present workaround is to close said window, refresh the main TSWA page (sometimes a few times), and try again.  This usually works, but not always.  The next step is to close the browser window, start a new window, relogon, and then access the work item.

Needless to say, when this happens continuously throughout the day, the product becomes virtually unusuable.  To indicate the seriousness of this issue, we are considering moving away from TFS :(

Here are the details of my system:

Windows Server 2008 SP1
Team Foundation Server 2008
Team System Web Access SP1

The application pools in ASP.NET are:
TswaPool1
TswaPool2

Both .NetFramework v2.0, managed pipline mode = classic, Identity = NetworkService
Advanced settings indicate request limit 0.
Maximum Work Processes = 1
(Should all be default settings).

I've set Recycling to 600 minutes in the hope that this would help, but no luck.

Hi Anilca,

Could you try to recycle the cache of TSWA? Stop IIS(ot the TSWA site), delete the content under [C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team System Web Access\Cache\] on server, and then start the IIS.

I did try this actually.  Note, there is VERY few files (maybe 10) in the cache directory.  But I wrote a script to do this, and the problem persists.

How many files would you expect to be in the cache directory, for this problem to manifest?
How often would you think restarting IIS is appropriate?  Doing it too often causes problems with active connections, and not often enough does nothing for the original problem.

What kind of load are you seeing on your TSWA instance? There are known scalability issues as detailed in the Scalability White Paper:

While SP1 brought on improvements cache issues still remain albeit to a lesser degree. Set up a script to clear the cache (we used it 3 times per 24 hours), and write failure/success to the event log. To delete the cache you should stop the TSWA application pool otherwise deletion of cache might fail. We ran the script at around 6am, 6pm and at midnight, to maintain operations during working hours.

Hosting several intances might also be an option, both as a failover and to divert load during peak hours.
