    1. Where are you installing .Net 3.5 from?

    2. On what OS/platform are you installing?

    3. Did you have any earlier versions of framework installed on this m/c?

Can you please copy all the dd_*.* logs for the %temp% folder on your m/c and mail them to me at kanchanm at microsoft dot com?

Has anybody found a solution to this problem.  I have a client experiencing it and I am now experiencing it myself.  Trying to duplicate my clients issue I uninstalled the .NET Framework 3.5, rebooted my machine, and then ran my application install which has a dependency to ,NET Framework 3.5.  The error showing at the bottom of the log each time is

I have seen many references to this error over the last few months but no real concrete solutions.

What is the cause of this problem?  We are also seeing a failure during the installation of the .Net Framework 3.5 on a Vista machine during a clickOnce install.  I believe the error is described in the following log lines:

    Installing using command 'C:\Users\THOMPS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD8E4F.tmp\DotNetFX35\dotNetFx35setup.exe' and parameters ' /lang:enu /passive /norestart'

    Process exited with code 1603

Status of package '.NET Framework 3.5' after install is 'InstallFailed'

The ClickOnce installation is served by Windows 2003 R2 using IIS 6.

    Any assistance would be appreciated,

I'm having the same problem.  Here's my install log excerpt:

Result of checks for command 'DotNetFX35\dotNetFx35setup.exe' is 'Install'
'.NET Framework 3.5' RunCheck result: Install Needed
EULA for components '.NET Framework 3.5' was accepted.

It seems that the link used by the installer ('http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89403') is wrong.

For such problems, I would recommend to use InstallAware as your installer to build installations. It allows easy one-click deployment of application runtimes like .NET Framework 3.5 along with the nested dependencies.

That's what I'm leaning towards.  I was just hoping someone from Microsoft would at least respond with a solution or a workaround suggestion.

    Also in InstallAware, there is:
     1) Better compression. InstallAware compresses the .NET 3.5 runtime 60MB smaller - that's  about 1/3rd less the original package size. Who wouldn't appreciate this?
    2) Partial web deployment. InstallAware can optionally download the runtime from the web only when needed, yet still shipping a fully self contained setup.exe that runs without mandating an Internet connection if the runtimes are already present

I may have uncovered a plausible but still unpleasant explanation by searching for dotnetfx35setup /passive on Google.  Dotnetfx35setup.exe may be looking for missing pieces on the internet and failing.  This would explain why so many tests were passed here, yet a customer encountered this, and it replicated once we started testing with Virtual PC.  I am currently using the very new VS 2008 SP1, and the problem still occurs.

It may be then, that the workaround is hook up to the internet before installing.

This can be an issue with the permission with the ServiceModel 3.0.0.0 registry key. Find the below link for more details
