Question.NET Framework 3.0 fails to install

  • Friday, February 15, 2008 10:41 AMRobert Tostevin Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

    Hi

Up until recently I had framework 3.0 successfullty installed on my development machine along with a hotfix released made last year to fix WF DelayActivity issues (Knowledge base article 932816 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932816)

When an Automatic Windows updated recently tried to apply 3.0 SP1 it failed I then uninstalled &  tried re-installing .NET 3.0 ... with the results below

    [ My OS is WindowsXP & Frameworks 1.0, 1.1 & 2.0 are also installed ]

"Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.x86 has encountered a problem during setup."

The detailed report contains values of .....
    EventType : wap10setup
    P1 : 13855
    P2 : 3.0.04506.30_waprtm_x86_sfx
    P3: mc
    P4: inst
    P5:f
    P6 : dd_ca_installxwsregexe_x86.3643236f_fc_70_11d3
    P7: 0
    P8: 1603
    P9: -
    P10 : windows communic

Solutions that I've already tried are ............
[1] I read in a related posts about looking into the %temp%\dd_dotnetfxinstall  (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1498544&SiteID=1)
So I've attached the last part of the contents below to get a head start on this one .

[2] I've also tried looking at the registry access to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Security\ServiceModel 3.0.0.0.
    SEE http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=916507&SiteID=1
    But that key wasn't present

[3] I've also tried 'cleaning the .NET3.0 install' as suggested in other posts in this forum ... but no luck there either

[4] I've tried installing framework 3.5 but that didn't work either

    Hope you can help

    Thanks

    Rob.

The log information looks not complete.

    Please follow the instruction

What to do when you go to post a setup and deployment issue on the MSDN forums?

    Hi

My environment is as follows :-

    Windows XP SP2
    VS.NET 2003
    VS.NET 2005
    Frameworks 1.0
    1.1 SP3
    2.0 SP1

I have tried to install the following framework packages (all without success)
    Framework 3.0
    Framework 3.0 SP1
    Framework 3.5

All were obtained from the MS MSDN site & all are the full install package ie not the redistributable
Neither of the above installs will work

I did have IIS installed but I have now uninstalled it after some other post seemed to suggest this might allow the framework install to work .... however it didn't

The Full Log file can be viewed at following location :-
    http://cid-c31d8df9594c87e9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/MSDNForumFiles/dd_dotnetfx3install.txt

This is the log that the first entry above relates too, however I have spent the weekend trying multiple suggestions from various other posts, such as uninstalling Atlas & IIS  etc

    Hi Rob

Please clean the %temp% folder. and run the .NET 3.0 installation again.

Please use the collect tool from here: http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/Collect.zip to collect the log information.

There should be at least dd_dotnetfx3error.txt there.

It is a Win32 console application, so you can extract it from the zip file and double-click on it to run it.  It will create a file named %temp%\vslogs.cab on your system after it has gathered all of the log files.

Note - after the tool finishes running, you can get to your %temp% folder to find the file vslogs.cab by clicking on the Start menu, choosing Run, typing %temp% and clicking OK.

(while running the collect tool, it may take some time to collect log files on your machine, please be patient..)

    For more information, see: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/08/01/4172276.aspx

    Thanks

    Hi Figo

I've run the collect utility & the cab file can be obtianed here :-
    http://cid-c31d8df9594c87e9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/MSDNForumFiles/vslogs.cab

The error file seems to indicate that it was a WCF install error.

    Thanks

    Rob.

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for your information, I looked at your log files, in one of the dd_wcf_ret*.txt, it says that the IIS on your machine has some problem.

So I suggest you to repair/uninstall IIS before another installation to see if the problem is still there.

If the problem persists, please feel free to let me know.

    Thanks

Additionally, I'd suggest trying the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/11/479928.aspx to clean off and re-install the .NET Framework 2.0, and then hopefully the .NET Framework 3.0 will install correctly after that.
If those steps do not help, then one of the following might also be useful:

    Hi Figo

    Thanks for that.

I've tried uninstalling IIS & then installing .NET 3 but I'm afraid that didn't work either.

One of the symptoms I'm getting with IIS is that when I try to use the IIS Manager & I click on the local machine node it says that I don't have rights to access the machine (even though it's local), & i've tried this as my usual user and teh Administrator but it still doesn't work

I'l try the suggest ".net 2.0 clean" as well

    Thanks

    Rob

    Hi Figo

    Unfortunately that hasn't worked

    I've tried cleaning the .NET2.0 install & then re-installing .NET2 & .NET 3.0 both with & without IIS installed

BTW : I'm still getting an access rights error when IIS is installed (even after a remove & re-install)

[Not sure if this is related or not ??]

    Rob.

    Hi Rob,

It looks like the access rights error is exactly the problem that the .Net 3.0 installation is having as well.

Here's the relevant error message from the dd_wcf_retCA* log:

    Code Snippet

ServiceModelReg [14:03:13:031]: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))
       at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)
       at System.Management.ManagementScope.InitializeGuts(Object o)
       at System.Management.ManagementScope.Initialize()
       at System.Management.ManagementScope.Connect()
       at System.ServiceModel.Install.WmiInstallComponent.get_IsInstalled()
       at System.ServiceModel.Install.WmiInstallComponent.ApplyNamespaceDacl(OutputLevel outputLevel)
       at System.ServiceModel.Install.WmiInstallComponent.OnInstall(OutputLevel outputLevel)
       at System.ServiceModel.Install.WmiInstallComponent.Reinstall(OutputLevel outputLevel)
       at Microsoft.Tools.ServiceModel.ServiceModelReg.PerformAction(ActionItem actionItem, Nullable`1 confirmUninstall)
       at Microsoft.Tools.ServiceModel.ServiceModelReg.Run(String[] args)
       at Microsoft.Tools.ServiceModel.ServiceModelReg.TryRun(String[] args)

Are you sure that the installation is being run by someone with Administrator rights on the machine?  (I'm not sure if the access rights issue is specific to IIS or not, but I suspect that it isn't.)

Also, the log says that your event log file is full, so you might want to clear your event log from the Event Viewer (Start -> Run -> eventvwr) and then you'll be able to see new error messages from the Event Viewer.

    Hope this helps,

    Nick Doty - MSFT

First make sure that the current user account has the administrator permission.

and then give a try to the above two links.

    Thanks

    Hi Figo

The user profile I'm using is an administrator but that said I've also tried everything logged on as the Administrator itself as well, but still get the same permissions issues.

    Hi

I've tried re-installing IIS & running SubInACL tool but stil no luck I'm afraid

Even logged on as administrator the install fails.

    I think I might be looking at an O/S re-install ?

This can be an issue with the permission with the ServiceModel 3.0.0.0 registry key. Find the below link for more details
