How to give url mapping to sharepoint2010 sites

Hi

 Here am new to the development  environment ...I got a problem that a client ask me that provide alternate access mapping to our site.I try to configure threw Central Admin----AlternateAccessMappings-----option ..But if i try to do this the website was gone...How do i configure.
