HELP!! my hotmail and ebay accounts have both been hacked, I have managed to get my ebay account back as they were really helpful, but I am still waiting to find out what is happening with my hotmail account. I have been in touch with hotmail/microsoft, filled in the on line forms as best i can, but I am still waiting for a reply. is there any thing I can do to speed up the process of reclaiming my account? I've had the account for something like 8 or 9 years so you can imagine the number of contacts i have built up! the email address that was hacked is [e-mail]

The exact same thing has happened to me! I have had the email account for about 6 years and don't have any contacts saved anywhere else. Ebay has already helped me with my ebay account but I haven't heard from hotmail yet.

Same thing happened to me.

Big drama in trying to recover the hotmail account. Microsoft has no real way of communicating with them in cases like this.

I entered problem in support page and got a reply requesting info to reset the password and the reply to the email to microsoft bounced! The email address from microsoft was useless. Obviously nobody has tried to reset a hacked hotmail account. There is no live chat support either. (my ebay account was also hacked (I checked after reading above) but they have a great support system for recovery.)

I am on my third try at trying to get someone at microsoft to get back to me with a solution.

My hotmail account is an older one so the reset email replies go to the hotmail account which I cannot access!! (Catch 22).

I wonder how many accounts have been hacked?

My hotmail account was hacked on New Years Day. They then hacked my ebay account and changed passwords and secret questions in both. I immediately contacted Hotmail Support under the password reset area. They responded with an automated response immediately and asked me to reply to that email if I wasnt happy with that reponse. I replied and a real person from support emailed me back with 12 questions that only I could answer. As I opened the account 8 years ago and have never changed my password, I had difficulty remembering some answers. Some of the questions were folders you have created, the IP addresses of the computers you use to access hotmail (found at www.whatismyip.com) etc. I answered the questions and they sent me a link to reset my password. I was only out of my account for 3 days.  I am EXTREMELY happy with the Hotmail Support team and now very scared as to how someone actually got into my account - I wonder if they can do it again? Obviously I have changed my password to a strong one and I never use the remember me function on any PC.

Similar situation has happened to me. A Hotmail account I have had since 2002 has been hacked in to and both password and secret question has been changed. I am now trying to recover from a position of being an addict and I don't need some one blackmailing me with my past.

Hi Sylvan,

 

I went to Windows Live Help and then to the password reset area.  I filled in the online form about password help and I received an automated response.  The automated response advised that I should respond to the email if i was unhappy with the response.  My email was responded to within 1 day with an email asking me questions that only I could know.

 

I hope this helps and I wish you the very best.  I ws very happy with the service I received from the Hotmail account team.  I hope you receive the same help.

I've had the exact same thing! I'm very worried that my address and bank details may be somewhere within an email in my inbox and the hacker now has access to it.

The most annoying thing is there seems to be no way to contact msn/hotmail and get them to close the account (or recover it to me). I've tried going through their help pages and sent them an "online" form telling them of the issue. Even though I included an alternate address for them to reply to, I haven't heard back from them and it was over a week ago I sent the email.

These days to get a hotmail back is a bit easy and a bit hard because to get a msn back is u have to use ur mind on ur hotmail think like a hacker what i would do to get in and when u know wat his gonna do then u coould secure the places that they try to get in. I may get hotmails back but i will need a reward back becasue it takes a couple of days.

How did you get the email from MSN? Did you have to report that your account was hacked? If so who did you report that information to? I clicked that email address link you sent but it didn't work so I'm just curious how you got that e-mail in the first place. if you could e-mail me ([e-mail]) that would be awesome!

I noe every body wants there hotmail or email back, but wat i could do is when u get hack theres a program that when they are black mailing ur family of friends u could retrieve there ip address. I downloaded a new ip tracker, wat it does is you just have to write there ip address and in minutes with the satelite coneection it founds it house number, phone, location and satelite image. Or wat u could do is found the ip and then give it to police and they could track the person for you. I noe many ways to get a hacker caught and found and to get email,hotmail,myspace and facebook accounts back. I will do it but i will need a reward in return to make me fell happy and when i get ur email or hotmail u could be happy. If u wanna noe more just reply.

I've been through something similar recently where I think someone has managed to forward my inbox emails to their account. Anyways I search google for help and found a good page on about.com,

At the bottom of the page there is a link if you have neither an alternate account or know password. Click on this link and it will take you to a verification form. Fill it out, and hotmail should get back to you. I received an email the next day. Hope it helps!!

the response you received is genuine.
microsoft needs these information to identify you that u are the original owner of the victim's email account.
the information they asked in the email. only an original owner can know about that. not the hacker.
and on the other hand you dont have to answer fully these questions. just answer what do u remember correctly but dont answer wrong.
they may prepare another questionaire for you on your answers to these questions.
you dont even need to give full list of your contacts and email addresses. you can give some of them. but u must take care of it that the detail you provided is not wrong.
Less answers may take you on there next step. but a single wrong answer will just stop the communication.

at microsoft they log your every account detail changes. when you make any.
so that they match your answers to your past information changes not the current.

and you should be happy to respond to the email address you mentioned. they are the entity that already have your all personal information :)

GRRRRRR!  I am also a dissatisfied Microsoft Hotmail account owner right now!!!  My 2 hotmail accounts have been messed with for 1 year and NO ONE has given me any help!

Here are my issues:

1. Have been trying for almost a year to close my two hotmail accounts

2. They mysteriously re-activate after I receive emails saying my password was reset.

When you put their address in my Facebook login, it defaults to my page.  I went in to my FB to changle my password and saw that the live.com was listed as an "alternate email."  I deleted it, but it still defaults to my page.

I can supply any/all information on this person.  I am sick to death of "form emails!"  They pigeon hole you into a problem that doesn't really address your problem, and keep sending me somewhere else!

This is for all the people who have had their Facebook and MSN/hotmail accounts hacked into:

My Facebook account and hotmail account connected to fb was hacked into, also all the passwords where changed so the 'i forgot password option' for FB was not an option

-To get your hotmail account back you must fill out a validation from to confirm you are the owner of the account (try to include as much information in the email as you can) eg, who you last messaged, who last emailed you, what type of emails you have in your inbox i.e, friends usually email you or spam emails.

it can take up to 3 days for them to get back to you, and if you are successful, they will send you an email to the email address you give them that takes you to a password reset link, where you reset you password.

For facebook, there are a few options, the best option being number 1 below, but doing them all will get you results.

- After doing several Google searches I managed to find a few contact emails to contact FB so i emailed all these email addresses, again with as much proof to say it was my account, including:

Full name, D.O.B, secret question (if you can remember it) IP address=(go to:www.whatismyipaddress.com), messages in your inbox, approx when the account was created and password and information on how you believe the account has been hacked and how this makes you feel (violated)

facebook contact email addresses:

This can also take a few days to get back to you, what they to is disable the account for security reasons and ask you to email them back with either Photo ID (drivers license) or whatever other security question they require to validate its your account.

this is what step I'm up to with getting my FB account back, I'm yet to hear back from them.

windows live help .com to reset password, you will have to answer questions on the acct, i was off on somethings...but i got my acct back! for future reference i created some folders that i wont forget (even if nothing is in them) but then i can prove it is my acct. you will also have to provide ip address but it worked for me, good luck! i know how it feels =( !

This happened to me last week and I was able to get back into my account after a week.  I did exactly the same as you and had to set up a new account to receive the emails from hotmail.  If I had the opportunity to set up another account sooner it would have been resolved more quickly.  Hotmail were very good at responding quickly - it all took around 3 days (an email per day).  When I regained access to my account I found that everything had been changed even down to the layout of the page!!  I also found hundreds of emails from ebay which is the only reason I knew that my ebay account had also been hacked into and was then able to regain access to this also.  I am very happy with ebay because they closed the account knowing that something was wrong and even sent me an email informing me that they believed a third party had gained access to the account.  Unfortunately I couldn't get into my emails to receive the email until I gained control of the account!!  I've changed my password and hope this never happens again but I have had the account for 10 years and this is the first problem I have ever encountered.

I helped my mother recover her hotmail account that had been backed. The process was quick and the hotmail staff was very helpful.

Here are the steps to recover the hotmail account:

1. When you go to Window Live page to log on, click on the link for forgot my password just underneath the box for entering password.
2. On next page, enter your email address in the box for Window Live ID and type in the characters in the picture to proceed in the box for Characters .
3. You will then see an option to either answer a security question, or have your password reset and emailed to you.
4. If you remember your security question, try this method. It is possible that the person who hacked the account went in and modified this question.
5. If you are unable to answer the security question, try again and this time try to have the password reset. However, if you have the password reset, and do not have a secondary email address which has been previously provided to hotmail, this method will not help because hotmail staff cannot know where to send you the new password. It will get sent to the only account they have for you, which is the hacked account and it cannot be accessed. Thus, for this option to work, you must have a secondary address attached to your hotmail account.
6. If neither of these options work, to the right of these options is a link to get more help. Click on this link.
7. When the Window Live Help page opens, you will see some information about what options there are to recover the password. At the bottom right of this page is a link to Get More Help . This will take you to a new page. On this page click the link for Get Support . For me, clicking on this link opened a new window titled E-mail Support .
8. On this page you will be asked to give your (a) name, (b) an email address to use to correspond with you since your current email address cannot be accessed by you (either create a new email address or provide an email address of a friend helping you), and (c) the email address which has been hacked.
9. For What type of problem do you have , in the dialog box for Please select an option , select sign in and password . When you select this option, a new dialog box appears directly underneath this one. In this new box select, I think someone hijacked or hacked my logon credentials . It is important to select this option--I think it is given greater priority. Underneath this box, there is a text box where you can enter additional information about why you think your account has been hijacked. Information beneath the text box is not very relevant but I still entered it.
10. Click Submit when all information is entered. Hotmail staff will then send an email to the alternate email address you provided in step 8b of my post with a link to a form that asks for information discussed by KhurramAR above (on Nov 5, 2008). I received this email within an hour (perhaps less) of submitting the form. I think it is an auto-generated email.
11. Follow the link provided and submit this form with correct information. Hotmail staff will review this information to confirm you are the owner of the account. They will then send an email which will allow you to reset the password. Hotmail staff was very helpful and they responded to me within 5 hours. I expect at other times they may not be able to respond as quickly based on their load at the time.
12. Someone in this discussion asked how to know whether the request from this information (described in step 11) is coming from hotmail and not a hacker, which is a good question. First, fill out the form by navigating to it from the Windows Live Help window. This website's URL begins with help.live.com. The window for E-mail Support in which I describe in Step 8 of my post has a URL of the form: support.live.com. Unfortunately, some hackers seem to be using an email that is similar to live.com to confuse people into thinking they are associated with Miscrosoft. Each time you submit a form (in Step 10 and Step 11), you are given a reference number by the support website. This reference number is contained in the email. Furthermore, the support emails (to which I refer in Steps 10 and 11) come from a domain that ends in microsoft.com.

This set of instructions was written on January 12, 2010. Depending on how much later it is when you are looking at these instructions, it is possible that the support interface may have changed and the instruction might have become outdated.

Incidentally, the hacker tried to ask people for money. If you ever get an email from someone you know saying they are in an emergency and in urgent need for money, contact them by phone because it may very well be a hacker pretending to be them.
