Try this? Go to folder Msn Messenger and find msnmsgr icon from there, then rename it as msnmsgr.exe
Worked for me when I had same problem.
I hope that it helps you too.

I am so sorry, but I am VERY new to PC"s. When you say go to folder, or find the icon, are you meaning on my desktop. The one in my start menu just opens MSN, the one on my desktop already says exe behind it. Sorry for being so new to this.

    Hi Lorettablonde

Double click on My Computer icon in the desktop --> Then Double click on Local Disk ( C: ) --> Double click on Program Files --> Double click on MSN Messenger folder --> find msnmsgr icon and rename it as msnmsgr.exe

I have received seven emails from the Microsoft Technical Department telling me how I could fix this particular problem, only to discover that their solutions DID NOT work.

After a whole week of rabid determination and insanity at not being able to use messenger because of that stupid error message ... you know the one:

    Runtime error!
    Program C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe
    R6025
    pure virtual function call

I FIGURED OUT HOW TO FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, what you got to do is:

    1. Uninstall Windows Live Messenger and all associated components (i.e.: sweetIM, etc.).

    2. Click "Start", click "Run", type "cleanmgr", and then click "OK".

    3. Make sure you check all the below boxes:
    - Downloaded Program Files
    - Temporary Internet Files
    - Temporary files
    - Temporary Offline Files
    - Offline Files

    4. Click "Start", click "Run", type "CMD", and then press "ENTER".

    5. Enter the following comands one by one (Copy & Paste):
    del "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL"
    del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL"
    del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts"
    del "%USERPROFILE%\Contacts
    del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Users Live ID>\Sharing Folders"
    del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Users Live ID>\SharingMetaData"

    6. Click "Start", click "Run", type "CMD", and then press "ENTER"

    7. enter in the folowing comands and follow the prompts one by one (Copy & Paste):
    REG DELETE HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger /f
    REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger /f
    REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\Communications Clients\Shared /f
    REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL /f
    REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\usnjsvc /f

    8. Restart your computer.

    9. Go to http://www.download.com/

    10. Download a freeware program called "Advanced WindowsCare Personal 2.4.1.790"

    11. Install and run program

    12. Now reinstall the latest version or Windows Live messenger, and

    13. Ta-dah! You should have a perfectly functional messenger!

    Well, it worked for me!

    Good Luck.

I have upgraded to a new version of msn messenger and now iam unable to log on as i keep on getting a message:

error code80072efd, and he says that i need to review my firewall or proxy settings.

I went on the help bar and he says that if i 'm able to log on to the web messenger then i need to add MSNmsgr.exe to the firewall allow list-this i do not know how to do.

Another thing how do i get the MSN messenger folder? which i think is the first thing in me being able to add to the allow list.

    Please help...........email asap

I am having the same runtime error with messenger.

    Runtime Error!

    C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmgr.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application support team for more information.

I got it working again once by uninstalling it, doing the commands above to clear the registry entries, etc. After I reinstalled it it worked for a while but after 2 or 3 reboots the error came back.

I contacted Microsoft about this but haven't heard anything back from them yet.

Recently this error may be caused by the version of "Messenger Plus 5.0" , so if you have this version installed, uninstall it and open MSN to see if is working again .

If it fix the error, install an older version of Messenger Plus, 4.90 for example, can be found here: http://www.msgplus.net/Downloads/v4

    Good Luck!
