     Answer

    I cured this problem on my Vista Home Basic install:

    1) Right click on the Messenger shortcut icon on your desktop;

    2) Click on Properties;

    3) Click on the 'Shortcut' tab;

    4) Click on the 'Advanced...' button;

    5) Put a tick in the 'Run as Administrator' box & click OK.

    I have no idea why this works but I can use Messenger Live now without DEP closing the app.

    Hope this helps, Jules.

    This is usually caused by an older version of Flash that has a bug which crashes under DEP. If you upgrade flash, things should be fine.

    If upgrading flash doesn't help, please let me know so we can look into it.

    Okay, I'm going a little crazy here.  I just got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium.  But like everyone else out there, DEP keeps closing my windows live messenger when I attempt to log in.  I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, uninstalling reinstalling, running as administrator.....nothing seems to work.  If anyone has any other suggestions that would be GREAT!

    I´ve just updated my flash to version 9,0,28,0 on a Vista Home Premium. I've ticked Messenger to run it as an administrator. Eventhough DEP is shutting the program down.

    I'm having the same problem with all versions of msn. I upgraded to Flash 9,0,28,0 - no change. I tried the 'run as administrator' workaround mentioned above and the box is grayed out, so I cannot use this solution. I tried going into system>advanced>performance>settings>DEP and manually adding the msn executable to the allow list but vista tells me that this program must be run with DEP enabled.  Running vista home premium.

    I'm sorry, but this is just funny. Why would microsoft release vista when its own programs don't work on it. This is a clean install too - straight out of the box.

    Hi rahime, I just clicked on the link and it works fine. Otherewise, maybe try a websearch on google, etc,.  ie: "acer patch DSMSN81patch.exe"

    I hope that works.

    Keep smiling

    Right clicking on the DESK TOP ICON for Windows live messenger worked under Vista Home premium as well,

    the option was greyed out in the start menu,

    HAS to be on the desk top icon to work.

    PC re-installed messenger with a couple of "Do you want to run this"  type dialogue boxes, but Messenger functions at the end of it.

    I had to restore my system due to a keystroke tracker. before, with my acer aspire, i downloaded the patch and it helped me run the messenger. now, i downloaded it again and it still doesn't work. There's always one in the bunch that it just won't work for. HELP.

    Just right click on the desk-top icon

    (or the program icon in "computer" area...NOT THE START MENU or THE QUICK LINK task bar icon).

    Go to properties,

    Go to Compatablity

    Check box at bottom for "Run as administrator"

    (Cant remember if it needs to run in win XP compatablity mode, so if it doesnt work with just "run as admin" try the compat. mode as well....)

    Should get a re-install of Messenger, but will work afterward.

    If it works for a while, then you get messages and shut downs, it is probably related to your screen saver. If you are using a non-approved or compatible screensaver(It might work perfectly, just conflicts with Messenger) this will be the source of your problem. Try switching to bubbles, or one of the screensavers that comes with your version of the operating system. This will fix your problem.

    I cured this problem on my Vista Home Basic install:

    1) Right click on the Messenger shortcut icon on your desktop;

    2) Click on Properties;

    3) Click on the 'Shortcut' tab;

    4) Click on the 'Advanced...' button;

    5) Put a tick in the 'Run as Administrator' box & click OK.

    I have no idea why this works but I can use Messenger Live now without DEP closing the app.

    Hope this helps, Jules.
