Proposed Answer Windows imaging Service

    Operating Windows 7 on laptop.  Using and HP Officejet printer.  Several days ago I was not able to access the scanner icon on my laptop.  Ran the HP Scanner utility which stated that Windows Imaging Service was not functioning.  Called HP and they informed me that this is a Windows 7 issue.  How do I restore or turn on this application?

    Identical problem.  All was working perfectly until the 13 Dec when we discovered the scan application for our HP Officejet Pro 8500 didn't work.  I followed the same path as mjposey describes above with no success so far.  Any help appreciated.

    Andy:

    Got my issue resolved.  I received this from Microsoft.

    Hi Martin,

    This is Julie from Microsoft.

    To start the WIA service, you need to start all the dependency services. To start the dependency services, please follow the steps mentioned below:

    ->>Click on Start->Type “services.msc” and hit enter, once you get the services window up, please do the rest steps.

    ->>First check and note all the dependency services-:

    ->>Right click on WIA->Properties->Dependency tab, Check the services name listed there.

     It should contain following services:

    *Remote Procedure Call RPC

       ->>DCOM Server Process Launcher

       ->>RPC Endpoint Mapper

       *Shell Hardware Detection

    Make sure all the above services are started in the services list.

    Last time we started Shell Hardware Detection, which solves our problem.

    (Andy, this is important.  Select "Shell Hardware Detection" and start that service which should start your "Windows Imaging Acquisition".  If it does not then select WIA and change the start to 'Automatic'.  This fixed my issues) After starting all the dependency services, please try to Start WIA service, it should resolve the issue.

    I had the same problem with my Windows 7 Laptop and Vista Desktop beginning about December 20. 2011.    After a month of searching for a solution to my WIA problem this one actually resolved the issue.

    I found the DCOM Server Process Launcher to be the problem on my win 7 to get my HP 6100 all in one printer going.

    This site is very helpful.

    Thanks!

    mjposey... it took a little doing, but with your instructions I got mine working too!  Had a little problem with setting Shell Hardware Detection - I did a Restart (Start was shaded out).  Good luck and wishes in all your future efforts.

    Thanks again,

    Please help!

    I have read the following response from Microsoft that has been included above but do not have the "->>RPC Endpoint Mapper" listed on the properties but all other headings are listed.

    Will that cause a problem to correct the scanner on my HP Photosmart 7510 unit?

    Seems HP has a lot of problems with this feature.

    All assistance is very much appreciated.

    The RPC appears to be required for the server/client to interact.  Why this isn't listed in your dependency services I don't know.  Under "Services" make sure that you have a "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" and "Remote Endpoint Mapper" and that they are both started.  Restart your computer and recheck under "Services" to see if the above dependencies were added to your WIA.

    Hey MJ:

    Thanks a million.  I'm not much of a techie at all, but I'm able to follow clear instructions which solved my inability to scan problem.  Previously I had gone through the HP troubleshooting procedures, then worked with 3 different tech support personnel which included uninstalling & re installing my printer 3 different times.  I was finally told by the last HP rep that this was a Windows problem and needed to find a software technician to solve this.  While indirectly I guess I did, but  man you sharing this fairly simple procedure with us was more of a help than you can imagine since none of the HP techies nor any other forums and experts  seemed to have any idea.  Thanks again.

    I am glad I was given clear instructions that I could pass on.  In this wild and crazy Techo world, all we can hope is that someone has the right answer.

    This appears to be an error message that we did not address here.  Most of use were having issues with missing WIA functions which may not apply your problem.  Have you called Tech Support at HP.  I called them first and found out my issue was a Microsoft problem.  Then I was able to get the proper answers to fix my issues and then pass that on to others.
