StickyAnnouncing the Universal Driver for Windows SideShow 1.5!

On behalf of the Windows SideShow team, I am pleased to announce the release of the Universal Driver for Windows SideShow 1.5!  This driver is now available on Windows Update, and the protocol documentation is available off of our WHDC site (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/sideshow/Univ-Drv_SideShow.mspx).

If you're implementing a USB, Bluetooth, or TCP/IP connected SideShow-compatible device, the Universal Driver can save you from having to write your own driver on the PC.  We've documented the wire protocol and what you need to do to connect up to it.  And the best part: it's free!

So, go ahead and take a look, and post any feedback or questions you have here in this forum.  We hope you find this new driver useful!

    Thanks,

Dan (& the Windows SideShow team)

As far as I see, the driver has only been published for the English language "version" of Windows Vista; as a result, the driver is not available through Windows Update for other languages.

Is this by design, i.e. are versions of the driver supporting other languages still under development or is it safe to manually download the English version through Windows Update Catalog and install it as no localized version of the driver is planned/needed?

    Best regards, Simon

    Simon,

It was my understanding that we were publishing the driver for all OS languages; we'll double check this, though, to make sure it is the case.

It is safe to install the English version of the driver on other OSes; there is no localization necessary.  For just about every device, the device name as it is installed is pulled directly from the device itself.

    Hi Dan,

I'm trying to figure out where I can download the universal driver. I've searched for it on microsoft.com and checked WindowsUpdate. I'm currently using an English Vista Home Premium but I live in Sweden. Is this IP based somehow? Judging by what's written in this thread it should be enough just having an English version, or am I wrong?

    Regards,
    Ola

It is available for all languages now regardless.  You can download it directly by going to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx and searching for SideShow (download the 1.5 version).

    Hi Dan,

Could you please check if the download of the document (Univ-Drv_SideShow.docx) is still working.

Whenever I try to download the documentation it tells me, that the resource is not available (tried different computers and networks already).

    Thanks,
    Berthold

This should be fixed now--please try again!  Sorry for the inconvenience.
