Sideshow control missing in Control Panel of Windows 7 RC
I've searched already through this forum but could not find help for my problem:
I cannot locate Sideshow control in Windows 7 RC Control Panel or in any othe place. I have already installed the WindowsSideShowManagedRuntime.msi package, I have a bluetooth device (this all worked nicely on the same computer under Vista). Also the Windows Mobile 6 PDA does not find the PC.
What am I missing?
Thanks for help in advance!

- Adam,
It sounds like the communication between the PC and device isn't working, and thus hasn't provided the "hint" that the control panel requires to become visible. Can you provide some additional details on your configuration, including:
- OS Architecture (32 or 64 bit)
- Model info on your BT radio
- Model info on your WM phone
- Version # of the SideShow driver installed on your PC (to get this, go to Device Manager -> Windows SideShow and look at the Driver tab for the device)
Also, have you seen the following post about a known issue with Windows 7 RC and Bluetooth-connected SideShow devices?
http://blogs.msdn.com/sideshow/archive/2009/05/05/sideshow-for-windows-mobile-disconnect-issue-on-reboot-of-windows-7-rc.aspx
Dan - Hi Dan,
I'm having the same issue as Adam, so I figured I'd provide my info.
- Windows 7 RC x64 (all updates as of today)
- Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR (integrated in an XPS M1530)
- ETEN Glofiish X800 with Windows Mobile 6.1 Build 21042.1.6.1
- SideShow driver 1.5.1.1
What's interesting is that ActiveSync works fine over Bluetooth, and when I go to the "Services" tab of the Bluetooth device properties, it lists both ActiveSync and Windows SideShow; but, if I uncheck SideShow and click "Apply", it pops up an "Element not found." dialog box and reverts the box to checked.
Also, will the final WM SideShow driver support USB connections as well? No sense draining the battery if I'm just going to keep it beside my laptop as an auxilliary display. Thanks.

- Aaron,
On the device, are you able to select your user account from within the Windows SideShow application?
Dan - My experience so far is similar to Aaron's. I have a Verizon branded Touch with 6.1, and I'm not even able to get SideShow service to show up on the device, even though A-S is working fine. I find the SS device with my name as a sub-node in Device Manager, but that's about it. And, because the service doesn't show up on the phone - no go.
Clues welcome! :-)

Rick OCS UA - Dan,
No, on the device the "current user" drop-down in the options is blank. The SideShow control panel applet does not appear on the desktop, either, nor does the SideShow service (which I think used to in Vista when SideShow was enabled).
- Aaron - Aaron,
We are trying to reproduce the problem internally in order to provide more guidance. When I have more information to share I'll post back here.
Thanks,
Dan - I have the same experience. The device is showing in the Bluetooth devices, it have the Sideshow checkbox option turned on, but I can't see SideShow in Control Panel nor connect to the computer.
Of course the device is paired and the sideshow for mobile is installed on the device.
Please help,
Thanks,
Albert - Hi guys,
In order to help us troubleshoot this further, can you please provide the value of the following registry key for your Bluetooth radio?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\<VID_vvvv&PID_pppp>\<Device Instance ID>\DeviceParameters\COD_Type
More information here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa938550.aspx
Thanks,
Dan - The registry key shows :
COD_COMPUTER_MINOR_LAPTOP 0x03 The device is a portable computer.
Thanks,Albert - I have 3 as well.
I installed Windows 7 RTM Ultimate and I noticed the same: Control Panel did not show the Sideshow icon, neither could I find it by searching for Sideshow in both Control Panel or Computer. It looked to me that Sideshow simply wasn't integrated in Windows 7! I tried adding it through "Add Windows components" but there's no Sideshow either.
However, when I installed my Windows Mobile device (Sony Ericsson Xperia X1) things changed. First thing to do is make sure there is a sync partnership. Therefor the ActiveSync service has to be enabled for the BlueTooth device in the BlueTooth settings of your PC. Once that's done I had all kinds of issues with getting the drivers in place. Automatic updating through the "Device driver-balloon" just did not work. However, when I ran the Windows Update application, it detected at least 2 driver updates for my BlueTooth device and it all worked out great! I suddenly had SideShow icons in my Control Panel (I had to use the Search though to find it) and I could successfully connect Sideshow between the two devices!
Not very intuitive, but as you see you'll succeed as long as you keep on trying! :) Hope this helps.- Edited byRobinPaardekam Tuesday, August 11, 2009 2:08 PMTruned "i have this issue to" into "I solved this issue"

- Good that it's solved for you, I haven't been able to get it by doing that..
I have given up on SideShow, it's wasted too much of my time. I come back here once and a while to check on the status of it and it's unfortunate that I won't be able to sell this as a plus for Windows. Most of my customers own Media centers and Windows Mobile phones.
Seems that the admin around here have been dropping the ball too. Not responding to a major defect in the software. - Hi, I had the opportunity to try out Windows 7 RTM (64 bit) from a laptop borrowed from my friend.
I wanted to use it for a presentation next week. I have been using Windows Sideshow on my old laptop (running on Vista Ultimate 32bit) but the laptop was not working anymore which is why I borrowed one from my friend.
Just like the topic starter, I had exactly the same problem. WindowsSideShow do not appear in the Control Panel at all. However, in my Bluetooth settings, the Windows SideShow checkbox is ticked and selected. In the Device Manager, I could see a Windows Side Show device which is my device.
Then I came upon this discovery on how to 'open' the 'hidden' Windows SideShow. Go to Help & Support from the Start Menu, search for Windows SideShow. Then select No.7. Turn a Windows SideShow gadget on or off.
In the solution provided, there is a shortcut to 'Click to open Windows SideShow' When one click on that, the SideShow window opens, but still, it doesn't solve the fact that my device (Dopod 577w with Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard, installed with Windows SideShow developer preview) could not connect to the computer. I understand that this is the RTM version and that the final release would be almost similar to the RTM, I hope that Windows SideShow would be working by then.
Until then, unless someone here can come up with a miracle solution on how to get SideShow working, I guess I'll have to try to obtain another laptop with Windows Vista. Cheers - I have the same problem on win7 rtm 32bit. I have the sideshow device correctly installed in device manager and sideshow as service in bluetooth device.
sideshow works with the same mobile device works on another pc with win7 rtm x64.
This is what ms logs in the eventlog when I enable sideshow service in device properties on the 32 bit machine:

with my usb bluetooth key on the tablet pc:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_0A12&PID_0001\5&1536bcb&0&1\Device Parameters\COD_Type is 3
and its not working.
the same bluetooth key on the desktop:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_0A12&PID_0001\5&22954613&0&1\Device Parameters\COD_Type is 1
and it works.
the built in bluetooth on the tablet:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_044E&PID_3001\5&1536bcb&0&2\Device Parameters\COD_Type is 3
and its not working.
So its only the cod type? Can I just switch it to 1? Don't want to break something. :)- Any news ? There are lots of people waiting for this to work.
- Well, I have did some googling and it seems like MS will release an updated driver prior to the GA of the software, or perhaps slightly after that, so it will work, just a question of when.
