I just got to playing with the Windows 7 Sensor Development Kit I received at PDC2008.

I found that I got lost during installation.  The 2 DVDs threw me.  This is how I got it installed.

    *** You will need Windows 7 build 6801 ***
*** Also, I installed VS 2008 SP1, Windows 7 SDK and Xna Game Studio 3.0, though I am not sure what you may need ***

Here's my advice:  ignore the "Can Your Badge Do This?" DVD right now, insert the Sensor Development Kit DVD.

Open the Documentation folder, and then "Sensor Development Kit Driver and Firmware.rtf"

At the very bottom, you will find the section entitled: Troubleshooting driver installation.  Follow those instructions.  On step 5, I drilled into the driver directory, and executed the SensorDriverInstaller that applied to me.

There is one more step, after verifying the Sensor Development Kit in Device Manager, return to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound.  Click on "Enable location and other sensors" under "Location and Other Sensors".  Enable Sensor Development Kit, and apply your changes.

The Samples should now work.  Word of caution: I was trying a bunch of things, so let others know if this works for you, or add on to this if I missed something!

    Blair.

Glad to hear you got the development kit working.

You should be able to do this on a Windows 7 pre-beta machine (build 6801):

    1. Plug in your sensor dev board
    2. Run SensorKitDriverInstaller.exe from the root of the CD layout
    3. Install Tools\DiagnosticTool\vcredist_x86.exe from the CD (if you don't have visual studio installed)
    4. Run Tools\DiagnosticTool\Binaries\SensorDevKitDiagnosticApp.exe from the CD to validate that sensors are working

If that does not work for anyone, please reply with your symptoms.

    Thanks,
    Gavin

    Gavin,

Do you need to enable the sensors from the control panel?  That's one thing I forgot to do, and I was thinking that was the main reason the diagnostic app wasn't working for me at first.

When you run the diagnostic app, you should see the "Enable Dialog", if you click "Enable these sensors", that's all you will need to do. You can also manually enable the sensors in the "Location and other sensors" CPL under "Hardware and Sound".

Did you see the enable dialog?

    Thanks,
    Gavin

When I try to run the "SensorKitDriverInstaller.exe" file I get a windows error:  "SensorKitDriverInstaller.exe is not a valid Win32 application.  I'm running Vista 64bit SP1.  Is there a workaround for this.   Anyone else had this issue ?

The Windows Sensor and Location platform requires Windows 7, as it's a new feature that does not exist on Windows Vista.  The kit (and driver) should work on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
