Welcome! This forum is for questions about DirectShow application development.

Where is the latest DirectShow documentation?

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd375454(VS.85).aspx

Where can I get the DirectShow SDK samples?

Download the latest Windows SDK (formerly called the platform SDK). More information here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=62332

Note: Each version of the Windows SDK also supports development for down-level versions of Windows. (See the SDK release notes for exact details.)

I thought DirectShow was part of the DirectX SDK?

DirectShow was removed from the DirectX SDK in April 2005, and is now in the Windows SDK. The first version of the Windows SDK that included DirectShow was the Windows® Server 2003 SP1 Platform SDK.

    Are there other DirectShow Forums?

    UseNet: microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.video (http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.video)

If your question doesn’t relate to DirectShow, you can try the "Where Is the Forum For...?" forum: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=881&SiteID=1

    Are there books about DirectShow?

To my knowledge, all of the books about DirectShow programming are out of print. Here are the ones I know about:

    • Programming Microsoft DirectShow for Digital Video and Television, Mark Pesce
    • Programming Microsoft DirectShow, Michael Linetsky
    • Fundamentals of Audio and Video Programming for Games, Turcan and Wasson

Who answers questions on this forum?

    Mostly people like yourself.

Most people who respond in this forum are other DirectShow developers. Many of the DirectShow MVPs generously spend time answering questions here. People from Microsoft may respond to posts, but they also do so in their spare time.

    Tips for Posting

    • Make sure your question is about DirectShow.
    • Make your question specific.
      • What are you trying to do? What problem did you encounter? Describe the exact behavior you are seeing.
    • Post relevant code.
      • But do not post your entire 4000-line Windows application.
    • Use a descriptive subject line.
      • People are much less likely to answer posts with the subject line "Help!" or "Newbie question."
    • Do your homework.
      • Do a quick search in the forum. Maybe your question has already been answered.
      • Look in the SDK documentation.
      • The DirectShow documentation is very large, and you may not know where to look. It's OK to ask!
