Slow internet connection on Vista?

We use WinInet to send HTTP request and get response. On Windows XP, it works fine. However, I got timeout error on Vista. The timeout occur when calling InternetReadFile(). I tried many times. Sometimes, It works; Sometimes does not. My Vista version is RC1 build 5600.

I am not sure this is a Vista bug or we did something wrong. Please help.

Run following command from Admin-level command line prompt solved the problem. I think Microsoft will fix this problem. Is that right?

Hello Jigsaw-ols,

I have found that this has been addressed a few days ago and should appear in the RTM product. For now you will just need to use the netsh workaround.

I have a brand new machine with 4Gb RAM and a 5Mbps connection, running Vista ultimate and the internet is soooo slow (I also have an XP Pro desktop and laptop that use the same router and they "fly"); what in Vista is causing the internet to be slow?

I've tried the netsh solution (no change); I've also tried disabling IVP6 (that stopped the entire connection from working on the Vista machine).

Anyone any ideas? Google seems to reveal hundreds of posts about slow internet, but none that give me a solution.

Finally cracked it (after switching off IPV6); turns out culprit (for me) was McAfee

Uninstalled and now she flies ;-)

After numerous hours on the phone with my manufacturer (downloading patches, resetting the machine etc), we finally discovered that the problem was indeed McAfee. More specifically, it was the Phishing Filter. Both IE7 and McAfee have Phishing Filters, which I dare say is too much 'protection' for anyone's party. Once I disabled the McAfee filter (but left the IE filter running) we were off to the races. I just had to go back into McAfee to disable the annoying messages that I wasn't fully protected. Hope this helps.

Have tried just about everything there is to try.. do not have Macafee, or I'd be disabling that. Anyone else? Same issues here - brand new computer running vista - can take up to a half hour to load some pages. Downloading anything right now isn't even an option..

Exact problem as robg2251. I've disabled IPv6, went to services.msc and set the IP Helper service t omanual (not sure what it does, but if I encounter any problems I'll set it to Automatic again). My download speeds are incredibly slow, and I want to download a lot of things but with Vista I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

EDIT: I came across this topic by googling. So far, I haven't found much, but I've learnt a lot. If I ever get a solution, I'll be sure to post it.

I can confirm that turning the McAffee phishing filter cured it for me where all the other fixes failed. NOTE turning it off in the main Configure box did not work but the setting in the "Internet & Network" tab did... From some posts I had read I thought I was going to need a new router but this Vista machine is now as good as the XP one through the same old DSL 504T router.

Hope that helps someone, it has just wasted about 5 hours for me getting this new PC to work. and I don't think I would have done it without this thread so many thanks to everyone else.

After much research I figured out Vista SLOW internet connection problem! Just simply uninstall the McAfee program and you will see that the internet connection will fly and I mean fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have McAfee on my system (and never would! it's pants) but still onlky getting about 25kbs download speed from an 8Gig broadband service! Under Xp i'd be averaging around 500kbs! Why is it running so slow, if it doesnt have McAfee installed? Its such a pain the @rse when trying to download 40gig+ driver files etc! Takes sooooo long!

I've tried using my USB modem and my Netgear Router. Both connections give the same slow speeds!

Please, Microsoft, help! Otherwise I'll be returning my Vista and putting my old Xp Pro back on which ran fine!

Guys I love you all. Advised my girlfreind to buy her new laptop from Dell. She had an old compaq laptop and this was running faster on the net than this shiney new Dell. Dell ship McAfee crappy security centre as standard so I did as you advised and disabled Phishing filter. Wow, sorted it out straight away. Is anyone using AOL? I have the same slow problem but it doesnt seem to be anything to do with phishing filers and i dont have Mcafee. If other people are fixing the problem under vista (the Mafee prob) then it musent be vista. It seems to only be slow on peer to peer and youtube for me.

I tried running that program and it said the update dosnt apply to me.

Does McAffe come with Vista? I just installed Vista and my internet speed is very slow. I connected my laptop (which runs XP) and i had no problems.

Can you be a little more specific on how to uninstall.

update: i went to my internet settings and disabled Phishing Filter so now IE runs like the wind and downloads fairly fast (faster then before i disabled). However, FireFox is still running very slow. I also think my FTP is running very slow, but i have only tried on one server and i will try another to see if there is a difference.

I have the same problem with internet/vista =( .....tried disabling phising from the internet options...still the same...i don't have mcafee installed ( i have avast, but even when i had no Antivirus, it was still slow)....disabled ipv6 (from network options...don't know how to do it from registry)....still the same...tried to disable windows defender...updated network card drivers...still the same!!!!! Is there an actual solution to this problem??? all the forums i checked out seem to give different answers...!!! my pc is connected through a router to the broadband but i don't think that is the problem...(unless there are specific settings for vista) i'm running another pc in parallel and it works perfectly with winxp.......whyyyy did i buy vista lol!!!

Any help would be reaaaaally appreciated if not i'll just switch back to xp and eat the cd of vista

Can anyone help with internet problems on Vista! I have MS Liveone care and Vista Pro on a new Machine and am having huge delays while typing and page loading on both IE7 and Firefox... What is the fix? It is almost as if my keyboard is broken, you must type one character per second for it to come through on a web page plus the web pages loading is super slow and often unclear.

My new Vista computer has been slow on the internet since I got it two weeks ago. I also have tried many things and talked to many people. The issue is finally resolved for me. The modem was between the computer and the router. I put the router so that no electronic devices (the modem) was in the way of the signal. In case it matters, I also turned off and unpluged the three items (computer, modem & router). After a few minutes I plugged in & turned on the modem; waited until appropriate lights were lit; then plugged in the router. After all lights were on the modem and router I plugged in and turned on the computer. I was told to keep the modem & router always on (unless not using it for a week or so). I now have McAffy on fully and Vista security on full except for the firewall (which is on McAffy). The computer has been working great for two days. Praise the Lord.

Ok I am def ready to switch to a mac! I have a $3k Sony notebook with 2 gigs of memory and a 100G HDD... I have had slow internet loading,/surfing and sporadic web typing plus lines running through my loaded web pages. I have run the system with all add-ins disabled, the microsoft Live OneCare disabled, windows defender disabled, etc. I have literally tried everything, disabled the phising filter, made sure my computers updates were updated and still internet problems! I downloaded Mozilla Firefox latest edition and that seemed to fix the problem for a while but now both IE7 and Firefox are all running like the computer is an old Tandy POS. What is the cause and solution? This problem has nothing to do with the modem/router/etc. It happens no matter which of the hundred ways I have connected to the internet, it's not the ISP, It's not the wireless, it's got to be Vista. Anyone know how to fix? Palease!!!!!!!

This is a "me too" post just to say thank you to the people on this thread. I had the same problem, new Dell Vista PC running terribly slow on the Internet while my XP machine still flies along, and disabling McAfee Phishing Filter has fixed it. Thanks all.

I did same thing with my Dell, 'slow internet' problem was completely resolved.

The coming up question is "what is the replacement for McAfee?", I meant, any other anti-virus (spyware) we can use for Vista?

I'm also having slow internet. Mainly during downloads and playing battlefield 2 online. I use to download at 180kps, now 32 and lower. It's not right!! I use to have McAfee, I uninstalled it because that's what the Vista advisor told me to do. So I'm still having slow internet download times and crazy lag. Please help. I'll try the turn off computer, router, modem, and turn them back on.

I've recently installed Vista and was aware of the potential problem with internet speed, initailly all was fine then suddenly the internet slowed to dial-up speed, I checked back with event viewer and realised the problem started when an Update ( Windows Vista (KB929735)) installed itself, I uninstalled this update and the problem vanished, don't ask me why or what this update is supposed to do, but uninstalling it fixed things for me.

There are many reasons why slow internet problems can potentially occur, 3rd party products can often create problems as can many many other things. With that said, the best approach is to contact main MS support or your computer vendor if you continue to have problems, often they may know about what product might create the problem and have a solution for you.

I had the same problem with a new Compaq laptop and Windows Vista Home. The culprit eventually was the security suite offered by Cox Communication. Once I uninstalled it and then added the free AVG antivirus everything ran smoothly. The previously mentioned was installed and made no difference in my case. It is odd that I did not even have the anti-phishing or parental control portion of the security suite installed on the laptop and the Authentium software still slowed me down.

Just to let you all know I have just purchased a new computer running Vista Home Premium

and low and behold I too had a problem wit slow internet. After playing with my antivirus and firewall it finally clicked, what has changed since purchased my new machine and it ran so quickly on the internet. The answer WINDOWS UPDATE, so I removed all 31 updates off my computer since the date I started and the internet is super fast. Come on Microsoft get your act together and let us know which update is causing this prblem and how you intend to fix it. So to all you ot there running Vista with slow internet remove all your updated updates.

Hi Guys, my problem is, at start, with Vista, my internet will work fine, but after few minutes.. it will start to gradually slow down and then at one point, it just wont open any web page,(at this point, disconnecting from my wireless network and connecting again wont help, it just dont connect back although i can see my wireless network in available list, but it wont connect until unless i restart my gateway router) then i have to restart my cable gateway router(using linksys WCG200 gateway router). After i restart the router, the download speed is grate, 300 +Kpbs/sec but again after some time it will start to slow down. any one have any idea????

I have exactly the same issue. Internet speed is fine for a minute or two then slows dramatically on my new Vista machine. My laptop (which I am on now) conncts fine wirelessly and hardwired to the router. Of course, it runs XP and not Vista. Guess my next step is to remove the Cox Security Suite on that machine as someone above suggested. I already turned off the anti-phishing filter on both IE and through Cox. No change.

I looked into the netsh command on my system last night. Come to find out, mine was already turned off. So I enabled and it was better last night. Not great, but it did improve. I also upgraded the firmware on my wireless router, but that didn't appear to improve anything. I did find a router compatibility tool on the Microsoft site and ran that and everything came back as 'supported'. So, things have improved over what they were, but still not as quick as I think they should be. At least it was useable last night.

I have a problem with the slow Internet too, very much like everyone else.

I'm sure the computer spec makes of no importance here, but I bought a Packard Bell iMedia J2411 from PC World some months back. I've never really noticed it 'til lately, but the Internet has been going really crappy slow.

Whilst playing online games such as World of Warcraft I get lags or spikes. Either way you want to put it. It lasts 2-5 seconds which is enough to annoy anyone in any game or just browsing online!

I don't have McAffee, but I have Norton 360 instead. I've tried disabling the things as stated in previous posts, but to no avail. I have yet to try uninstalling the one Windows Update or all the Windows Update patches, though.

I have been reading all these posts about slow internet. Has anyone deleted cookies, temp files, history? How about disk clean-up and defrag? These work wonders to speed things up. NEVER RELY ON SCHEDULED DEFRAGS!!!! It should be done every 3-4 days, at least. I do mine maually. My internet zips right along all the time. I have an HP slimline 1gig memory, 200 gig hd. Have had it about a yr now.

I changed my power settings for my wireless adapter from Maximum Power Saving to Maximum Performance and my internet speed is now back to normal...

Power Options (in the control panel) >> Change Advanced Power Settings >> Wireless Adapter Settings >> Power Saving Mode >> On Battery >> Maximum Performance

Note: I am running Vista on a Toshiba Satellite A200

Go to control panel>programs and features

Look on the top left it will say view installed updates click the link, a list will appear with all the updates, select one or as many as you want then uninstall

Hi all,

I just got a new Dell machine on Vista Business and have intermittent cut outs of my internet connection (i.e. link lights on ethernet port cut out, connection lost) when using with my DSL-504T D-Link modem... intermittent being every 30 secs or so. Renders the internet very slow and VPN unusable. This only occurs with this particular modem; same problem does not occur on this computer at friends house with a different DSL modem or at work. Same modem/cable works fine with XP computer so it's not the wiring or ADSL connection.

Have spent hrs trying to find a solution for this! Tried disabling McAfee, disabling DHCP broadcast flag in registry, altering MTU of both modem and computer, turning of TCPIPv6, disabling autotuning of TCP.... if anyone has another idea for a solution would love to know!

Pretty frustrated at both Microsoft for the useless operating system (not the first problem I've had with vista) and at DLink for selling a product which does not even state that it isn't compatible with Vista. Phoned DLink and was told "buy a new modem"; how much crappier tech service can you get??

I am using Vista home premium and my download speeds are slower than my othe laptop that is running Xp(checked online).

I can get 300kb speeds with the xp and only 200-220 kb on vista, even though vista is running on a more powerful system.

I run regular clean up of the hard drive but still can't manage the speeds of xp.

I really like the look of vista compared to xp and wish that microsoft would look into this problems on these pages and come up with a solution for us. It seems that I have tried everything but can't seem to improve the speed.

Don't know if you're still having the problem. My connection slowed to a crawl last night after installing Vista updates. Ironic. After spending all day trying to figure how what was wrong with my DSL connection, I did two system restores. The first didn't work. The second, going back an additional day before the updates, has everything singing again.

I'm ready for a Mac, too. Or Linux.

I've discovered something very interesting about this problem.

I've noticed that when the Vista/Server 2008 update is applied, the IP stack seems to start doing some funny things. Specifically, all of a sudden, looking at the arp cache reveals that my server thinks that a printer is now the default gateway. Not the IP address mind you, just the arp entry.

Checking the arp entry, I found that it was a network printer elsewhere in the office. I turn that printer off, and life is good. It would appear that somehow the server is receiving what it believes to be a proxy arp from the printer on behalf of the default gateway.

Still working with Microsoft to find an answer to this. I can't imagine that the printer is doing this, so it's got to be something in the IP stack for Windows 2008/Vista that is doing it.

I tried changing this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

EnableICMPRedirect

from the default of 1, to 0.

Rebooted. Although the arp table seems to be wrong still, browsing has sped right up.

Will update if I get more information.

Am I glad I found this forum. Got new Dell a couple weeks ago. SLLLOOW net almost non existent. after reading these threads I tried a few of the suggestions.. The ones that worked for me was to change the power options for battery lenght to maximum (which really limits my battery time) and stopping phising in McAffee. Now it flies. I was ready to throw this laptop out the window.

Hours on the phone with Dell tech support and with Comcast with no solution. Wish I had come here first. I finally have a laptop although I don't think it should have to run on high performence to get on the net with no stalls and get pages loaded.
