I added a CNAME for bt-blog.azurewebsites.net as blog.btsystems.com.au and when i attempt to go there i get an access is denied error? I know the CNAME is correct though. Is there any reason why this isnt functioning???
This is more a dns issue. The high order solution would be if web sites offered an optional fixed IP for web sites. Then you could just setup an A record. ms could even share a fixed IP and internally switch it to the correct iis site
using internal vtable. Would require some backend work.
Yes I too am hoping that "custom domains will come to Shared sites "for a fee"." as, like many, I have numerous smaller sites
and would like to keep all my sites (small and large) within one (Azure being my choice) environment.
An alternative to Websites that I have recently been using are Web-Services - Allows Domains, not as expensive for extra-small VMs as websites are - gives more flexibility and altogether a far better option.
Ok.. after little bit of research and few phone calls to my Domain registrar support line I could make it work, wanted to share with you all facing issues with domain names and azurewebsites hosting
this is a 3 step process
Step 1) Log on to your domain registrar control panel > Create a CName record "www.yourdomainname.com" and point it to yourwebsite.azurewebsites.net.
this generally is quick but for some registrars it may take upto 24 hours to propagate, be patient, I recommend you check the propagation using external tools like http://www.digwebinterface.com,
put "www.yourdomainname.com" in the hostnames box, select CName from the drop down list and select resolver radio button and click dig, if the propagation is complete it should show you something like
Step 2) Login to your Azure Management portal and Navigate to websites > click on the website that you are configuring > click on Scale link on the right hand side of the page > ensure that mode is not free, a Shared or a reserved mode will work
Step 3) Click on the configure link (next to scale link) and click on manage domain button (only appears if the site is in shared or reserved mode), enter your domain name as "www.yourdomainname.com" it will check if the CNAME record is propagated,
so perform this step only after Step 1 is completely done.
if all steps complete successfully you are all set, generally it takes about 20-30 mins when you can use www.yourdomainname.com and start running your website.
