GUI problem: WPF controls in the toolbox of VisStudio08 are grayed-out

Hello,

I'm creating the GUI for one of my projects in Visual Studio 2008 (using visual C++) and controls from the WPF family are all grayed out in the toolbox, when working on the form.

The components that I want to use are checked in the "Choose toolbox items" area, so I see them in the toolbox but cant use them. the slider control (that I replaced with a trackbar) was the first but now Grid (not DataGridView that wants SQL commands...) is grayed out too.

I want to display a 2dim table of values calculated at runtime, in Excel style. Grid supposedly allows this easy with the possibility of extra formating of cells depending on the content (ex: if tmp == "3", cell green, elseif tmp == "4", cell blue, if tmp == "Bc", cell red...).

I have a standard installation of Visual Studio 2008 and .NET framework, my problem is with the WPF.

My question is then the following: How to use the grayed out WPF controls in the form and/or another method to do a Excel style Grid (without having, for example, to use an ActiveX to load Excel itself...)

I asked this question in the Visual Studio Class Designer Forum and was directed here.

This seems like it should be simple to do, but I have not been able to figure it out on my own. I have an application that puts up a fairly simple window to control it. The dialog that it displays has several buttons, radio controls, etc., and all seems to work fine. I have some static text that is displayed above one of the buttons, that is intended to help the user understand what the button does. I would like to change the color of this text, so it stands out from the other text being displayed. I thought I should just be able to click on the static text in VS and set a property, but this doesn't seem to be the way it is done. I hope someone will have compassion on me and explain in detail how this should be done. I will accept any suggestions you care to throw my way, including RTFM, if you can point me at the right manual. I had a hard time figuring out which was the right forum for this question, so please forgive me if I put it in the wrong place. Suggestions about the correct place to ask this type of question would be appreciated.

VS 2008 extremely slow opening xaml files

Hi All,

I'm experiencing a big problem designing in xaml files. Once I open any xaml file in VS 2008, the IDE becomes extremely slow (more than 5 minutes to open a file). If I open any other file (i.e. cs files), I've no problems at all. This problem happens since an undefined moment. Before this moment everything went Ok. I'm using the IDE in two different computers (a notebook and standard PC) and I've the same problem in both of them. My colleges are working in the same projects, not experiencing this problem anyway. But they use Windows XP. I've tried cheking the "Open alwys documents in full xaml view". Same results.

Currently I have VS 2008 Versión 9.0.30729.1 SP on Windows Vista Bussines SP2 (on both computers).

I suspect that undefined moment was a Windows Update or another similar kind of installation (maybe SP2).

I'm desperate because it's unaffordable to me to do my job actually.

All comments will be appreciated.

How do you swtich controls between different canvas?

Hi,

I am new to C# and WPF programming.

I created two canvas. The second canvas is a child of the first canvas. I have two mediaelement as a child of the second canvas. My question is if I move the mediaelement from the second canvas to the first canvas, How do I switch the control? Because when I run the program, it shows that the parent of the mediaelement is still the second canvas even though its on the first canvas.

I'm trying to make it so that if the user moves the video away from the second canvas, the video will start playing and if the user brings it back to the second canvas, it will pause.

Can Gridview have sort and filter property same like in excel...?

Hello,

I’m having a gridview with data in it.

Now I want to make a gridview with the same “Sort and filter” property like one in excel, which adds a dropdown list at the header field having all the distinct value for that column with a checkbox control.

I have seen a post regarding that--> Building a Drop-Down Filter List for a DataGridView Column Header Cell.

Code Builds, Designer Has Problem Loading

I occasionally run into a situation where, in VS 2008, a build succeeds but the designer fails saying "Problem Loading; The document contains errors that must be fixed before the designer can be loaded. Reload the designer after you have fixed the errors."

What's going on when I see this?

Hi,

Whenever I open up the first instance of a xaml file in Visual Studio the application 'hourglasses' for about a minute while 'Initializing Toolbox...'. This happens many many times a day.

Is there any way to disable the toolbox?

Access the Resource in WPF

Hi,

I have created a WPF project, and I need to add a "CreateReport.dot" file as resource in the Project. I have added the dot file as Resoure. But I am not able to access it via, code. It is showing the following Error.

Error 106 'CreateReport' is not a member of 'System.Windows.ResourceDictionary'

But I could add the same resource to a Windows Application project and I could access it properly with

Resources.CreateReport

VS 2010 Beta 2 : How to add AttachedProperty to an ModelItem?

I have a ModelItem of MyButton type in a PrimarySelectionContextMenuProvider. I want to add a attached property my:SomeClass.MyAttachedProperty to this class when context menu action is selected.

I have the menu running and the model item of the button.

How do I add the attached property to that ModelItem? I have tried looking for clues but so far the extensibility mechanism are very poorly documented or marked as internal.

Another problem is that I tried adding that PrimarySelectionContextMenuProvider to the base WPF button class using

that does not work. I have tried debugging it but the feature does not activate when its set to the Button. I have to inherit my own MyButton class from Button so that the feature works when I change the above code to use typeof(MyButton). Why I can't add my own menu to the Button designer?

Another problem with ContextMenuProviders are context menu provider attached to xaml elements which dont have a visible element in the designer. I tried using the document outline by right clicking the element in it but no context menu is shown.

I wish I at least got a answer to the first question about how to attach a attached property to a ModelItem.

Your (XNA) project type is not supported by this installation?

Hi,

I'm on Windows 7 and i've been attempting to use Visual C# 2008 Express and XNA (3.1) libraries.

I've installed both programs and registered the project, .net framework 3.5 is installed, and everything is fully updated and im not using compatibility mode..

However, when i try to open a (working) XNA project, or even create a brand new XNA i get the error "This project type is not supported by this installation.".

This is a fresh install, and i can't understand why this wont work? i can view source files from existing projects, and that's about it.

Any ideas on this one would be much appreciated as i don't enjoy using the crappy university computers to study this topic :)

Design window hangs in WPF, devenv.exe starts looping CPU around 50%

I attempt to create a new WPF project but the design window never populates and appears to hang. CPU usage for devenv.exe starts looping around 50% usage. I can close the project with no problems. I disconnect the USB VGA adapter and the WPF project will load and save with no issues. Re-connect the adapter and problem returns with any new or current project that was just working. I've had this same problem on a different model laptop, Dell 630 I believe, as well with a physically different adapter but same model.

I've been experiencing this problem for about a year and have since gone to a different laptop and new adapter drivers and the issue persists after a fresh install of the O/S, VS2008 with SP1. Any recommendations besides not using the adapter, it's pretty integral to other job duties that I have to perform and the issue precludes me from being able to develop in the WPF environment.

Currently using a laptop DELL Latitude E6400 4 Gig memory with 2 external monitors in which one connects to the VGA port and the other connects to a USB VGA adapter (Tritton SEE2 UV100) and have installed their latest drivers.

O/S : Windows Vista Enterprise SP2 (32-bit)

When I open another session of VS2008 and attach to the running devenv.exe process to create a dump file, the following 2 messages constantly loop at the bottom:

When I break debugging it gives the following warning, and does not appear to create a dump file:

Hi there! I've just started digging into the new design time support for WPF. Looks good! I have a scenario that I'm trying to work through, and looking for ideas. I want to be able to establish a "session" with a backend system for reading live data at design time. I've read up on feature providers, and connectors, as well as the EditingContext. I'm thinking that the EditingContext would be a good place to store some of the session information for the current design session (started the first time a control that depends on it is loaded or the some other initialization occurs).

Has anyone dealt with live data sessions at design time?? Would any of the new design time framework help?

Visual Studio 2008 crashes on SSIS Data Flow Task opening.
This is a random behavior on random SSIS packages on Data Flow Task opening on packages that I’ve finished developing last week. The packages does not executes with error.

Apply style at design time

Hi everyone,

I am using WPF to create a Windows client application. I am using styles in a resourceDictionary, to give my controls a better look and feel. When I set the style on my app.xaml and run my application, the styles are applied to the controls. But when working in the designer and developing my controls, I can't see the styles applied. Sure I can bind the styles on every view, but I would like to set them on one place, so that I am able to change the style by changing one line of code (or Xaml).

Is there any way to say WPF, "I want to use this styles everywhere", without having to set them on each individual view? I also tried to create a class, derive it from UserControl and then derive all usercontrols from my custom class. Then I could set the style in my class and every userControl would get it, but then I have to derive all my usercontrols from a specific class.

I need a way to say, "these are the generic styles, everyone uses them".

I had VS 2008 team system with VS 2008 SPI installed. Everything was working fine. Recently I started working on WPF projects. I created several components and windows. Worked fine.

While developing one of WPF application, VS crashed (it happens when I reload my xaml page). Later when I opened the one of my csproject having WPF
component, I having "csproj project type is not supported by this installation".

I have tried couple of options as follows, nothing works

Run devenv.exe /resetskippkgs
devenv /setup
regsvr32.exe "%vs80comntools%\..\IDE\projectaggregator.dll"

I uninstalled complete team system and related components. Again reinstalled VS 2008.

Now, when I try simple WPF application from new project options, I still get same error. It would be great if someone can help me.

Hosting Cider Designer in my Application

Solution: Intellisense broken in all WPF Projects after installing SDK/MSDN

There have been several reports where intellisense has completely stopped working for all projects after installing a version of the Windows SDK or MSDN. We have been able to track down the source of this problem. This seems to only affect installs of the SDK/MSDN post the installation of Visual Studio. One registry value has been incorrectly reset after these installs causing this failure. This issue has been handed off to setup team for a future fix.

In the meantime, if you encounter this issue, it can be fixed using regedit. First, determine if you are seeing this same issue by opening regedit and looking at the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{73B7DC00-F498-4ABD-AB79-D07AFD52F395}\InProcServer32

If (Default) is empty you are hitting this issue. To correct the problem, change the value of (Default) to point to the location of TextMgrP.dll on your system (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSEnv\TextMgrP.dll in my case with a C: OS drive and accepting all the defaults). Restart Visual Studio and intellisense should be working again. Thanks to everyone who submitted reports of this issue and gave us the additional details needed to track it down quickly.

Update: If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you will need to make sure you are running the correct regedit version (%systemroot%\syswow64\regedit - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305097) and you will need to locate the correct path to TextMgrP.dll (such as C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSEnv\TextMgrP.dll)

Using Resources , applying to source ()

I am having trouble and will continue to look here.

What I want to do is have files not copied, so it would be embedded in my EXE.. (thinking of making a dll, not sure how this would work either) Ive done some reading in the Library and tried my best to understand how to recall my "data" from the projectname.properties.resource.data , i tried this way and also using another extension of .resx

From what I understand every resource file i create eventually ends up under the properties.resources... though Ive tried it using my own syntax ex. project.file.data /resx .. still i cannot seem to get it to work.. This is so fustration.. finally I just used the method of a normal file which works.. and then used the option of binding to resource! which happily gave me some x:class Uri stuff and it didnt work..!

Not sure if the compiling is the problem.. If someone could understand this or just tell me how to make files embedded so they wont be installed and how to recall them in my XAML

Collection Object Binding in WPF for a ListBox

This began as an easy query which I thought would yield a solution. After 3 days of browsing this site and the web in general I've encountered at least 50 different ways to bind a collection object to a listbox in WPF and none of them are the same. How is this possible? There are so many pieces to some of these so-called solutions that I'd actually save time by coding for the actual events to update the listbox and/or the object.

If there is someone out there who can understand my frustration in learning this and would be able to tell me clearly and concisely what components are needed, I would greatly appreciate it.

my VisualStudio 2010 Beta 2 always crashes when I open a Xaml-File (it's just 1 but always the same one).
Unfortunately, VS opens this file as the active one when I open my project, so as soon as I open my project, VS freezes.
I can upload the xaml-file and the stacktrace if requested, but atm I need to know how to change the active file on opening a solution, so
I can continue to work on my project.

And apparently single threaded, as only one core is maxing out. Are there any performance tricks to speed this up? When I'm editing the xaml, I'm sometimes waiting in excess of a minute to get cursor control back. This seems to be particularly bad when using a wpf control library. Any help? Anyone else having the same issue?

Hey all, I'm using Visual Studio 2008 to work on an XBAP. While using the Xaml Designer to edit the XML of various things the designer is very, very, VERY slow. When I click on something like a text box or label it pauses for 5-10 seconds before selecting it. If I choose something else the same thing happens. I don't know how much more descriptive I can be besides I click, I wait, and wait... and wait some more, and then what I've selected becomes highlighted. None of the other members of my team are experiencing this.

Are there any settings I should check or uncheck to speed things up? A hotfix maybe? Anything? Thanks a lot!

How to achieve 2 decimal places

I have a point of sale calculator and i'm trying to achieve 2 decimal places in the results when the last digit is a zero.

I encountered a design time error on the EventSetter line below. The thing is, Selected is an event for ListViewItem. Also, the handler gets fired nomally. I haven't reported this yet because I'd prefer to get confirmation first.

Some Experiences Using WPF Designer on Visual Studio 2010 BETA 2

In general, I notice great improvements in terms of performance and stability in VS2010 B2. Thanks to Rico Mariani and team for this, and of course for the WPF team as well! The WPF team has done a great job of fixing the text blurriness for BETA 2.

Specific to WPF Designer, I also notice great improvements. It's noticeably faster (compared to VS2008 SP1) and has some great new features. Thanks to Mark Wilson-Thomas and team for this!

Some improvements I notice:

Faster loading of the designer. Though it's still a bit slow for the first time loading, but the subsequent loading is fast. (I still wonder why it's almost instant in Blend... Someone give me a hint?)
Nice exception detail in the designer (instead of showing a blank designer with useless message!). I've requested this before since it really helps debugging the problem with the XAML and code behind. It's great to see this in VS (it exists in Blend).
The Property Browser also has improved discoverability and readability. It shows common category properties and hide others. The advanced properties is also great, like one in Blend.
The Toolbox shows user control defined in the projects across the solution.

And well of course, there're some issues with it as well:

The designer ignores (dependency) property value change in the control's static constructor. For example, when I define the height and width property in static constructor, it has no effect in the designer. It works well in VS2008SP1.

Note that I've removed the width and height in XAML and move it to static constructor.

Sometimes, the property browser becomes blank temporarily when building project. I notice this in my project as well as in your latest video in Channel 9. Though I think this should be minor.

I am working on a live session telecast system, were viewers enroll to watch a live session, conducted by the presenter, There is a facility to the presenter to push videos and presentations during the live session, when the presenter does that, our silverlight control doesn't work appropriatly, all other viewers report, sliced vidoes and too much time in buffering, if there is any suggestion from anyone of u kindly share with me, It will be highly appreciated.

Visual Studio and expression blend error

I am working on a WPF project ...the project work fine in both visual studio and expression blend. Now I have change the project structure by moving the projects in folders. Now application working fine visual studio but when I open application in expression blend and If in expression blend I do not make any change the project works fine but If I make any change in project using expression blend I gives error .......Some send report or Do not send to microsoft.....

Hello, I've created a DialogPropertyValueEditor that I've attached to a Items collection property. This editor works fine, I can add, insert, delete and move items in the collection. The problem occurs when user Cancels the dialog. In this case, I get:

I assume this occurs because I have modified items in the collection by removing and re-adding them, and then the Revert encounters a remove and tries to re-add the item. If I don't remove and re-add items in the collection, then the changes aren't propagated to the XAML.

VS2005 Team Suite RTM with SP1 Beta - XP SP2 - latest patches

Hi,

I have been learning XAML at the intro level. I had an old version of dotnetfx3 and wpf templates and I could create a project and run it.

Yesterday I removed the old templates and the old framework with a removal tool and installed the RTM framework and new templates.

However now I cannot open create a new project.

The error message I am receiving is:

"The project file c:\documents and settings\renee\localsettings\temp\4t4baj4.dyv\temp\WindowsApplication1 cannot be opened." The project type is not supported by this installation.

I have not installed the extensions. I never have. I don't have enough disk space on the current system.

What's missing?

I have a asp.net page with a calendar control and the selection mode set to DayWeekMonth. I have a datalist which displays data from an MS Access database based on the criteria from the calendar.

When I select any day the data displays properly, but when I select a week or month no data displays.

How to activate a combobox inside a usercontrol at designtime

Hi,

I am searching for a solution where I am able to click on a combobox that will open and allow to select an item (this is inside a self written usercontrol).

But this must be done at designtime, not runtime. It this possible using dependency's?
It looks like the combobox is dead until runtime.
