Attempt to create a new WPF solution (use File...New...C# or VB...WPF Application).

2. If that works and opens in the solution explorer, go to the Window1.xaml file and right click, selecting Open With

3. Take a note of the program set as default, and the others listed in the resulting dialog - if one of them is Windows Presentation Foundation Designer, select it and make it the default using the "Set as Default" button on the dialog

4. If the WPF designer was able to be set as default, close and reopen your project then try opening a XAML file.

Please let us know how you get on with this, and what the default and list of available editors was in step 3 assuming you don't get to step 4.

Can I also ask if those of you seeing this issue previously had beta/pre-release versions of Visual Studio 2008, Acropolis, or other CTPs installed?

Thanks

Mark
Mon, 14 Jan 2008 21:34:11 Z2008-01-14T21:34:11Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vswpfdesigner/thread/053dc5c3-27fe-4ea2-a7f5-5c6cf35000bb#e871dd27-36a1-432a-9ce0-75c1ef6ab956http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vswpfdesigner/thread/053dc5c3-27fe-4ea2-a7f5-5c6cf35000bb#e871dd27-36a1-432a-9ce0-75c1ef6ab956Marlon Grechhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Marlon%20GrechNo xaml designer in vs2008Hi there,

I had the Beta and also Acropolis installed on my machine yet I uninstalled both from my machine before installing the new VS 2008...

My VS was working fine (and let me tell you, you guys did a brilliant job in the new WPF Designer... xaml designer in vs2008
Without uninstalling anything, I reinstalled ("repaired") .Net 3.5 SP1, and VS2008 SP1. Still no designer.

Then I ran devenv /resetskippkgs again, and I at least got to view my window design when I loaded the project (an improvement). But other than that, the symptoms were essentially the same: the designer pane won't refresh. I'm looking at a context menu that I popped up on top of the pane, which is logically "gone", but is still visible because the pane didn't repaint the invalidated region. The behavior is basically the same as in an old Win32 app that isn't processing its message loop.

- Erik J Sawyer
Thu, 09 Jul 2009 16:05:36 xaml designer in vs2008Hey, Ihave the same problem. Don't know exactly since when but must be since the roll out of SL3. I have VS2008 Pro SP1, SL3 Tools for VS2008 SP1 and Expression 3 installed. Does anyone have a clue? Thx. Mon, 13 Jul 2009 20:24:18 xaml designer in vs2008I created another thread for unable to toggle a solution from VS2008 to Expression Blend. Also with regards to the issue of designer view not shown, I found that everytime I open an xaml file, VS2008 render xaml code in a maxmized pane. Therefore it misleads me that designer view is not shown and I need to drag the split line to make it appear.Tue, 14 Jul 2009 00:55:45 xaml designer in vs2008Okay, this is just weird. I was just able to "kick" the designer into working -- really working, with design editing showing up in the XAML and vice-versa -- by some combination of the Rebuild Project command. I'm not sure what the exact combination was, but I got it to work on two different projects (one brand-new, and one that I had problems with previously).

Based on what I'm seeing, the Rebuild command basically "restarts" the design pane. Like I mentioned earlier, when this problem manifests, anything that overlaps that pane gets left behind and never cleaned up. When I do a Rebuild, the pane is cleared and I see the "Loading...ESC to cancel" prompt. In some cases, this prompt will go away after a moment and the designer is fully operational.

Hopefully this will help someone else, and/or give the Visual Studio guys a clue to the nature of this bug...

- ErikMon, 20 Jul 2009 xaml designer in vs2008I installed Expression Studio 2, thinking that I would just use Blend for XAML editing. Blend works great (I'm still learning how it's different from the VS XAML editor), but an interesting side effect is that the VS editor seems to be a bit more reliable. It's still somewhat flaky, but a lot better than it was.

- Erik J SawyerTue, 21 Jul 2009 15:02:55
