    you can load and web test both internet and intranet sites using web and load tests.  At the end of the day the web test recorder is just capturing http traffic.  I am not sure I understand your scenario exactly but the difficult thing about testing a live internet site would be that you are not accurately quanitifying the load.  For example, if you set up a 100 user load test and run it against a site in isolation you know how the system behaves for the load you configure.  If you run this same test against a live site you only know how your system performs with the load test + a bunch of external influences outside of your control.  External factors include normal site acrtivity (which is hard to quantify), unexpected spikes in activity (like more traffic at Christmas time or during a certain time of day), internet bandwidth, and even spikes on the server such as doing an anti virus scan or update or maybe a database backup happens to fire during your test.
