AnswerException has been thrown by the target of an invocation when clicking run test in team suite mstest

I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite and i was able to run tests
until a couple of weeks ago.

I run VS as myself in Vista as my user account which is non-admin and
UAC enabled. I get "Exception has been thrown by the target of an
invocation." OK message box when clicking run test in team suite mstest.

If I open the exact same solution in VS running as administrator the
    test will run.

I watched process access in procmon and noticed that as non-admin the
MSTestHost.exe process is never even started, so it doesn't get that far.

I'm limp along running VS as admin, but I would really like to get back
to my old dev environment. Can anyone help?

Seems like your installation got into a weird state... you might want to try running "devenv /resetuserdata" from a VS command prompt, and then trying to run your tests again.

Please let me know if this helps

I run it as my non-admin user "jrwren" account, which is the account having the problem and I get the message:

The operation could not be completed. The requested operation requires elevation.

So I run it again as admin and it spins for longer than I thought it would.

I started up visual studio and it is like it is the first time. I am prompted to choose my preferred keyboard bindings. I pick Visual C# and it says "Microsoft Visual Studio is configuring the Environment for first time use. This might take a few minutes."

And it does take more than just a few minutes.

    AND IT WORKS!

1000X thank yous! You have made me very happy today.

Running unittest from VS2008 received this error:
Exception has been thrown by the target invocation

Our projects have recently been upgraded from VS2005 to VS2008 along with Framework 3.5.
I have tried 'devenv /resetuserdata' from a VS command prompt, restarted VS and ran test, still got same error.

I would appreciate any help in resolving this!

    Hi:
I'm having a problem running MSTest from command line - I get the error listed in this post. Test is simplified to Assert true and works from within the IDE. Would appreciate any ideas. I've tried devenv /resetuserdata but no success.
    Thanks!

I am running into the same problems with MSTest. Can't run any tests anymore.

Additionally if I go to "Test" | "Windows" |"Test results" in a blank VS (no open solution) I get the exception as well.

I ended up opening a MS support case on this issue. We did some troubleshooting using fuslogvw.exe that checks assembly bindings. Turned out that another product Gallio had changed the bindings for MSTest. I uninstalled Gallio and MSTest.exe started working again.

    Hope this information helps someone!

I have the same problem and I have fixed it twice this week :-o First time with the red pill and second time with both the red and the blue pill...

    My symptoms are
    * Unit tests has worked on this machine for a couple of months, and all of a sudden it stops working (my prime suspects is that I get something from Windows Update that trashes my VS installation)
    * Just as Peter, if I go to "Test" | "Windows" |"Test results" in a blank VS (no open solution) I get the exception
    * If I run/debug a unit test from visual studio, I get the exception (probably because it tries to open the test results windows)
    * I get the exception even when I run VS as admin
    * It seems totally unrelated to the solution, more like som COM object registration in the VS install is messed up.
    * If I run the tests from mstest at the command line, the tests gets executed

Three days ago it stoppped working. I read several posts where peple tried "devenv /resetuserdata" without success and I found a post where somebody solved the problem by repairing the TFS client install. I tried the latter and jubiii th eproble went away :-)

Yesterday I got seven updates from Windows update and rebooted. Later same day I noticed that VS test results view was broken again! Related? Maybe... None of the updates seem VS related (the updates mention outlook, word, excel, office system, utils from my printer vendor, and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool). Smells a bit of dll-____...

This time it took more effort to fix:
    1) Repair TFS client (no reboot required) - still doesn't work!
    2) Run "devenv /resetuserdata" - still doesn't work!
    3) Re-run repair TFS client and after a required reboot, the repair continues/finishes. Wupti now it works again :-) But for how long????

The proposed solution does not work for me.
I have the same problem on all machines (Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ENU) after installing Team Explorer 2008 + SP1 + Team Explorer 2008 Forward Compatibility Update (GDR)

Here is the error found in application event log:
    _____

    Description:
The description for Event ID 5000 from source Team Test Error Reporting cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Removing Team Explorer from the system resolved the problem.
Note that removing the Team Explorer 2008 Forward Compatibility Update does not solve the problem, so this is probably not tied to this specific component.

    Any help appreciated.

    TIA.

Here we go again :-( Visual Studio worked for almost 2 weeks and now the test results windows is broken again! Same problem. This time it was enough to repair the TFS client - no reboot required.

I dont' have any events from "Team Test Error Reporting" in my application lo, so Olivier may have same symptoms but probably a different cause... That's probably why my fix doesn't work for him.

I didn't update anything in Visual Studio and looking at Windows update it has only updated Office and Windows defender.
