After installing Team Explorer, when I open a solution in VStudio, I have to click the File menu twice in order to see the menu. Is this a bug? Is there a hotfix?

VS2008 team suit Package Load Failure

I am stuck and cannot figure out what went wrong - what has changed on my
machine or what I have changed. I have even tried to fully uninstall my
vs2008 and sql dev server and re-install and the errors still remain.

I suddenly get errors coming into VS2008 Pro or going into "help->about".

All have the same "text" but I have 3 consecutive errors in a row.

Its the same error below, just replace the 'Microsoft Analysis Services

If we have to buy Team Foundation server do we need to buy vsts 2008 or we can buy only team foundation server. how we have to integrate team foundation server 2008 with visual studio 2008 professional. I've been doing some research into version control. SourceSafe does everything that I require at this stage and is only $280 dollars per license, however as it has been depreciated I would prefer to move to Team System Team Foundation, which is about $2800. I did read on a blog somewhere that I wouldn't need one of these for each employee, is this right?

Currently we have 2 Windows developers and are looking at recruiting another in a few months. $280 per developer is no problem, $2800 per team is no problem, but $2800 per person would be out of our budget.

Could someone confirm please?

Hi,

I have been downloading "Visual Studio® Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server and Team Suite VPC Image (Trial)" for about 5 days and when I ran the install, it gave an error that the CRC is corrup. I'm not able to find which file is corrupt so I can go download only that file from the MS website again out of 9 files so that I can spend less time now to complete the process. Its shocking to note that MS does not provide any way to verify the downloaded files integrity like using MD5 or SHA1 which will be lot usefull and save our time in trying to download all the files instead of one corrupted.

I have found that it actually a rather poor software for web deveopment. .NET would be a great package to work with if not for the odd behavior of the ide. The ide will break the html structure by simply moving elements within the page. It will become confused and repeat elements in the page. It will modify the html code so that <TD> tags are not closed. Renaming an element will cause a refactor which will often break server controls due to poor code creation. I had hoped to get involved with this technology but working with a page is risky at any given time. Perhaps the next version will do better. good luck to those who use this poorly implemented tool.

Refresh Dependencies does not update dependencies

Didn't realize it wasn't really called Visual Studio 2008 until I looked at Help|About.

OK, I am using Visual Studio Team System 2008 with Team Foundation Server on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I created a Setup and Deployment project for my Windows Service project. I then removed a couple of references that I didn't need. I already have them marked as excluded from the Detected Dependencies list under my Setup project, but I wanted to remove them altogether.

I have rebuild both my Windows Service project and the Setup project. When I right-click on Detected Dependencies, and click "Refresh Dependencies", nothing happens. No error message (that is the only post I can find on this issue, but I have NO error message), just nothing happens. If I un-exclude them, they show up in File System, but all I can do is "cut", not delete.

How do I get these references out of my Detected Dependencies list? I would think a rebuild would show the Setup package that they are no longer needed. Please help.

I have VS2008 Professional already installed and it is using Source Safe. I have now purchased Team System Developer 2008.
1)Do I have to uninstall VS2008
2)I need to still access and develop my Source Safe Projects, how do I do this whilst using TS Dev with TFS
3)How do I install Team System Developer Is it a case of running this on my local machine and following prompts.
Then Installing TFS developer addition on my Server. And then some how connecting to it from Team System VS2008 Developer edition?

NOTE:Downloaded TFSInstall-SP1-RTM-v080908.chm but all it says when I open it is about being unable to find the url,
so I only have the chapter tree nodes but no content.

We got the MSDN Retail pack subscription along with ISV pack. We want to know the licensing benefits of this pack. Means "in how many systems we can install the license keys". For example we are able to access 10 keys of MS Office Enterprise 2007.Can we install these 10 keys in 10 different systems? Please confirm. Performance of VS has been horrible since installing SP1 for 2008, it was never great on this machine, but now it's unbearable. I typically waiting 10 minutes for the hard drive to stop spinning and the processor to stop. The memory usage is at 920,792K. I've had several HRESULT Visual Studio error and 'Out of Memory' exceptions. I suspect it's this new C# pre-compiler since this is a large solution (13 project, maybe 800 classes + DB project).

Is there a way to turn the pre-compiler off or other 'back-ground' things Visual Studio is doing that is killing my machine???

My version of Visual Studio is Visual Studio Team System 2008 Version 9.0.30729.1 SP

Control Events in Properties Window blank in VS2005?

Hello,

When I opened up my project today, and selected a resource, and was going to bind some message handler code to an event associated with a control, I clicked the Control Events button in the control's Properties Window and the Window is blank? Normally I see a whole list of messages that the countrol could handle in a column on the left and on a column on the right, a place to add my own handler. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

I beleive I have the latest versions ov everytihng, and use this funtionality extensively, and was editing a class that already had a bunch of handlers created through this same process earlier.

Hello,

I am working on a product development using visual studio 2008 and using TFS as a version control tool. I want help on finalizing project folder structure on TFS. What should be the standard folder structure for any such project?

The idea is to release product after every few months and also want to do bug fixes as a patch release. The main question is for example, If I release new version 5.0 and started working on 5.1 but customer reported some emergency bug in 5.0, so how to organize all such patches/releases and what would be the folder structure.

Also like release folder, should bug fixes also have complete project or specific solution which is having bug?

Please suggest.

Hi, I'm totally new to TFS capabilities except the version control parts.

I'm doing some research for good tool to use for project management at my company, it will mean, new features requests, bugs reports, unit testing, automation builds, tracking on bugs or features.

So I'm asking is it possible to use TFS without any third party applications to let my product owners to post feature request's on lets say an web page, with priorities and information, and then I or someone else can couple some unit tests to the work item and start work at the work item and then mark it done?

I would really like to see an tutorial to set this up?, screen casts, blog posts, forums posts, something.

Team Explorer -vs- TFS Web Access

I'm the dev manager working on a project where the development team (remote) is using VSTS 2005. We're using a flavor of Scrum as our dev methodology. We're currently using a Sharepoint to enter and track bugs - certainly not ideal but workable. Reports and charts, like a burndown chart, bugs open/closed are created by the dev team using VSTS and emailed to me.

I'm thinking of making a change to user either VSTS Team Explorer or TFS Web Access to enter and manage bugs, view reports, ..., etc. The standard project management tasks.

Questions:
1. Which should I use and why
2. What are the tradeoffs

Hi!

When I open up Team System I get a basic view with a dropdown listbox for all existing projects, my own queries and team queries (for active bugs, all issues, etc)...

In our organisation we typically work on many different projects at the same time, and I would like to see not a page view based where I have to select a project, but instead a page view with ALL projects and queries setup for all projects.
I know I can create a query of my own to get all e.g. all active bugs for all projects (and sort it by e.g. severity etc.), but the query will be either my personal query or a team query for the currently chosen project. I want to create non-project-bound queries and a base view where all projects is the base for selection.

Is this possible?

This is probably a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find any answers Googling for it.

We just purchased the 'Step-Up' license to go from VS2008 Developer Edition to the full VS2008 Team Suite.

Is it possible to simply 'upgrade' the install? If so, what would the step-by-step instructions be? (I'm assuming we'd have to re-install SP1 afterwards, at the very least.. possibly Team Explorer also?)

Are there any 'gotchas' to doing it this way?

We were on TFS05 workgroup and purchased TFS08 standard w 5 user CALS. TFS08 was installed dual-tier.

We have 3 VS 2008 Team Edition licenses (one is Sys Architects), 1 MSDN premium, and 3 VS 2008 Professional licenses.

My questions:
Based on the licensing whitepaper, this should give us a total of 8 CALS, correct?
Must I do anything to activate the CALs or assign them to users?
One of the reasons for TFS08 purchase was to allow PM/BAs to submit/view workitems. This appears to work using TSWA, however, what does the PM need to be able to view all work items in TSWA, not just his own? Do they need Team Explorer?

Visual Studio 2008 - Class Diagram Fault - just shows file path!

Hi,

I wonder if any one can help....

When I try to drag a class from solution explorer onto the class digram esign surface it just showes the file path in normal text, like so

C:\Projects\Project1\BusinesEntities.Teacher.vb

It does not show the classes or their relationships with other classes.

Also the context menu is not showing correctly, I believe it should have ability to add a class and other functionality.
I just get

Got a gratis copy of Team Suite 2008. Its just the disc without a book. It came fedex from a microsoft evangelist and says " unlicensed software" Illegal without separate license from microsoft but has a product code. It has the developer, tester, architect, etc. The part # is 0501 Part No. X08-34106. Would like to match up this part to the standard commercial FPP. Guidance sought

Hi,

I am a developer of some commercial 3rd party Windows applications. I have a licensed copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition.

However, Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition does not include IA64 libraries. To be specific, I am currently using the x86 and x64 ATLMFC libraries within my development. However, I am now extending my development to IA64 platforms as well.

My builds use the Microsoft Platform SDK compiler.

Would it be legal for me to use the IA64 ATLMFC libraries which are packaged with Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite to compile and link (compiler and linker are from Microsoft Platform SDK) my IA64 application? And would it be legal for me to use these libraries after the trial period has expired? Please note that I am NOT using the time restricted Visual Studio Team Suite compiler during this process. I am only interested in using the IA64 libraries which are packaged with the Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite.

Setting the windows identity in a unit test

Could someone point me to an article or advise me how to set the windows identity in my unit tests. I am testing some code that needs to grab the windows principal but when I test it using VSTS the Thread.CurrentPrincipal is already set to a generic principal. I could seem to find any documentation on how to control this so any help appreciated. (I've tried setting the app domain principal policy in code to no effect - I think it has already been set to generic principal by the unit test framework code?).

Auto-increment a new work item field

I'd like to amend the process template for a Change Control, so that when I add a new CC, it is assigned a unique number within the change controls. Similarly for bugs.

The intention is that I can have Bug #1, Bug #2 etc, and also Change Control #1, Change Control #2, rather than have my users referencing the system ID field.

I'm able to add the new field with the process template editor, and lay it out on the screen, but I can't see how to get it to auto-increment. Please could you help?
