Code Coverage seems to be using the wrong configuration

When I try view the code coverage results form my test run, it looks all wrong. It appears to be reading from the "Debug" configuration when in fact the currently active configuration is "Debug-Tested".

I did notice these warnings:

What is the secret to getting a workflow custom activity in to the toolbox?

I was following the example that Aaaron Hallberg discusses in his blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/aaronhallberg/archive/2009/06/01/writing-custom-activities-for-tfs-build-2010-beta-1.aspx with the idea that I could use the custom activity in a modification to the build process file (Windows Workflow XAML) that is used in a build definition. Creating the custom activity worked. However, I have not found a way to get the custom activity to show up in the toolbox so I could drag it in to the build process file.

The first attempt was to open the XAML build process file in the designer and right-click --> Choose Items... in the Toolbox window. Browsing in the Activites tab to the SayHello.dll yielded a message box with this message:

System.Exception: The are no components in 'C:\scm2010\Development\SayHello\bin\Debug\SayHello.dll' that can be placed on the toolbox.

The SyaHello.dll was derived from compiling the workflow example in the VS 2010 Training kit, specifically the IntroToWF example lab and code (HELLOWORKFLOW, The lab is excellent -- easy to follow and simple). In that example code, the custom workflow shows up in the toolbox when opening the SayHello.xaml file in the designer.

The second attempt, a work-around, failed as well. The idea was to include the XAML build process file in the HELLOWORKFLOW sayhello project because the SayHellow custom activity was in the toolbox already. I found two potential issues:

1) The attribute line <SubType>Designer</SubType> was missing from the new XamlAppDef section added to the SayHello.csproj project when I added the build process file. The result was that the 'view code' and 'view designer' entries were missing from the righ-click menu.

2) I got the following error when I compiled the project:
XC1020: Build error occurred in the XAML MSBuild task: 'The member _UnknownContent has already been written.'

This is similar to the issue located here:

We have, for a while now, been unable to find a good tool to test our 64bit compiled application - some of our clients need >4GB RAM in one process. We have used home grown tools so far but this does not test the UI.

Running unit tests in TFS 2008 with VS 2010 beta2

Is it possible to use VS2010 beta2 to run unit tests on TFS2008?

We have recently upgraded our dev environment to Visual Studio 2010 beta2. We have a TFS2008-server running CI/unit tests nightly. With VS2008 Team Suite installed everything worked just fine. But when we installed VS2010 Ultimate beta2 on the TFS2008-server, the unit tests stopped working.

The unit test projects have a reference to Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.UnitTestFramework.dll (version 9.0.0.0).
I tried to change this to version 10.0.0.0, but I was not allowed to do so. The reference could not be resolved by some reason. Maybe its because of different runtime versions. 10.0.0.0 uses .NET 4.0 and 9.0.0.0 uses .NET 2.0..

I noticed that the UnitTestFramework.dll 10.0.0.0 is not installed in the GAC. Only 9.0.0.0. But the 10.0.0.0-version was installed in the GAC for the WebTestFramework.dll and LoadTestFramework.dll.

The problem is that our customer doesn't have a VS2008 team suite/test license for the TFS-server, which is required for running unit tests.
I guess upgrading to TFS2010 will solve the problem, but we cant do that yet either.

Visual studio problem with

Hi,

i want to start my test runs locally this also works but since I changed sth. on the controller i can´t change the connection back
to <Local - No controller>.

error report:
Connecting to the controller on machine '<Local - No controller>' failed. Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed.

I don´t know that to do.
I made an attempt with Manage Test Controllers ... to change the controller to <Local - No controller> but this doesn´t change something.

Test Agent and Test Controller

Hello,

i want to run tests automatic but without an environment.
Therefore i installed the Test Agent and the Test Controller locally but there were an error.
logFile:

Code stubbing with Visual Studio 2010 UML modeling

Hello,

I'd like to first say that I'm very impressed with the work done on Visual Studio 2010. Albeit its a little slow, but that's totally understandable due to the number of COM Inter-ops that need to take place with the new designers. Now onto the question.

Currently I'm exploring my way through all the new features added to the IDE and I found a feature that will hopefully be of great help to me. The UML Modeling tool in the Architecture Addition. I wanted to create a new test project, nothing special. I started out with creating just a standard UML Logical Class Diagram. Then after I had finished I wanted to export my diagram to C# code with class stubs but I couldn't figure out how to do it. So naturally I consulted MSDN, but I couldn't find any reference to the top down approach of design and sort of gave up on it. Then I happened to be on the Channel 9 website and I watch the Top down architecture video and they alluded to the possibility of Visual Studio 2010 being able to accomplish this task.

So I guess my question is, can Visual Studio 2010 take a Logical Class Diagram and generate code stubs from it?

I'm currently using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 Team System on Windows 7 (if that helps any).

Cannot get Test Impact View to work in beta 2

Am I missing some not-so-obvious setting or step?

I have set up the following:

In traceandtestimpact.testSettings > Data and Diagnostics > both Test Impact and Code Coverage are checked

In local.testSettings > Data and Diagnostics > both Test Impact and Code Coverage are checked

While in the above I told Code Coverage to instrument the DLLs and EXE that are part of my project

I’m pointing to the proper traceandtestimpact.testSettings file in Test > Select Active Test Settings > Trace and Test Impact

I have a unit test that calls my function

The projects are defined as 32-bit

I can right-click in my function > View Call Hierarchy and I see my unit test listed in the callers list

I’ve built the solution locally

I’ve run the test, and I can see code coverage.

I’ve built the solution using Team Build.
- In the build definition > Advanced > Analyze Test Impact is set to True
- The unit test does run as part of the build
- The build report shows the impacted test caused by the code change

Yet when I look at Test Impact View, all I get is “No tests are impacted” after I make a change. I build the solution (and even run a TFS build.) No matter which Test Impact View view I choose (Show Impacted Tests, Show Code Changes, Show Calling Tests), it’s always the same: No tests are impacted.

Everything (build, VS, TFS, SharePoint, SQL Server) is installed in one hyper-v image with Windows 2008 R2.

How to add keywords to test cases in VSTS 2010?

I need to add keywords to my test cases so that I can filter test cases to my needs . Quite a few of my test cases are to be executed on different machines by different testers. Is there a way in VSTS 2010 or MTLM that I can add keywords to my test cases?

Desktop Build doesn't work on VS.NET 2010

I migrate a Visual studio 2008 solution and projects to Visual Studio 2010. The solution compile as expected. Only the Desktop build doens't work. I have to said that I use Visual Studio 2010 with Team Foundation 2008. When I run this command from command line, I got a BuildSucceeded but that's not true. The build took 00:00:00:10 to execute. This time don't make sense because we have 70 projects contains in the solution file. The binaries are not copied in the BinariesRoot. And the assembly dll are not modified in their project directory. It seems like the build doens't build at all.

Power tools 2008 checkin policies with VS2010 beta

We have recently upgraded our development environment to Visual Studio 2010 beta, and we are using TFS 2008 on our build server.
We are not able to get the checkin policies to work properly with VS2010. I have installed power tools 2008, and it works fine with VS2008. But when I'm trying to check in code from VS2010 I get the following error:

Internal error in changeSet Comments Policy. Error loading the Changeset Comments Policy policy 
(The policy assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.PowerTools.CheckinPolicies.ChangesetComments, version=9.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' is not registered.).

Installation instructions: To install this policy, follow the instructions in CheckForComments.cs.

I have tried the hack proposed in the blog 'How To Get TFS Power Tool Check-in Policies for VS2005 to Work with VS2008' cause I thought our problem where similar.

But when I followed the steps in the blog above I got a new error message when trying to check in some code:

Any ideas how to solve this? Is it possible to use VS2010 with TFS2008 or should we consider upgrading TFS as well? Our customer does not want to upgrade TFS yet..

VS 2010 crashes when creating a new project

I've just installed Visual Studio 2010 beta 2. I already had VS 2008 sp1 installed on my computer.
When I start Visual Studio and create a new project, the application crashes before I can edit it.
I tried to repair Visual Studio 2010 but the problem remains the same.

Unable to copy file -> restart VS2010 after each debuging session

Hello,

I have a project in VS2008, the solution contains a exe some dll's. The exe is loading the dll's. To prevent loading the dll's in designtime I'm using:
if (!DesignerProperties.GetIsInDesignMode(new DependencyObject()))

This works fine in VS2008

and I can debug it as usually.

Loading the same Projekt in VS2010 I can debug it only once. After editing sourcecode and rebuilding VS2010 reports an error:
Error 35 Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\xyz.exe" to "bin\Debug\xyz.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\xyz.exe' because it is being used by another process.
Error 37 Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\abc.dll" to "..\Plugins\abc.dll". The process cannot access the file '..\Plugins\abc.dll' because it is being used by another process.

Is there a work around? It is not funny to restart VS2010 after each debuging session.

Cannot connect with Load Test Controller in 2010 Beta2

Hi All,
I was doing some Load Testing jobs on VS2010 Load Test with Controllers and Agents set up in my company LAN. Everything looks find until I tried to run the test with remote execution mode. There is an exception when running the test:

Error 11/20/2009 9:22:35 AM Failed to queue test run 'admintt@TEST-SERVER7 2009-11-20 09:22:35': Object of type 'System.Runtime.Serialization.TypeLoadExceptionHolder' cannot be converted to type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.Common.ITestTypeSpecificRunConfigurationData'. TEST-SERVER7

Then I checked the testrunconfig settings, found this error beside the controller dropdownlist in "Roles" Tab : Member of 'ConfigurationHelpUri' was not found.
Does anybody know about this?

Transition from VS2008 to VS2010

Our development team uses VS2008 Team, and produce checkins to various deployed branches of code, where each branch would be using VS2008 currently. Our code base is using VC++.

I have learned from the MSBuild forum that many of the control files (project files, etc) have been changed to MSBuild format.

How would you recommend transitioning to VS2010? Our normal approach is to convert some developer workstations to 2010. This would involve I imagine a complete conversion of our solutions, project files, and props files to accomodate the new MSBUILD formats. Our product is quite large, with over a thousand integrated projects, so the converted files couldn't be checked in until everyone had the new VS2010 developer software.

If these files have changed significantly to the point of not being backwards compatible to VS2008, that means that merges of changes into VS2008 branches will require significant effort, depending on the severity of the changes that were required to convert them.

So, how would you recommend transitioning workstations to 2010 when 2008 is the common development? How drastic are the changes if .vcproj files would need merging from 2010 to 2008?

ASP.NET Webpage Designer Window Problem!

Hi,

I am unable to view the Designer window for ASP.NET webpages. I can view the Code and Markup windows, but not the Designer. I have tried re-installing VS 2010 Ultimate Beta 2 several times; yet the problem persists.

Can anyone kindly help me out with this problem?

Unable to see content in Team Explorer (in Beta 2 only)

Hi there,

I installed VS2010 Beta2 on two boxes (Vista and XP) and both show the same issue.

I can see the Team Explorer.
I can connect to the TFS Server via http://tfs02.xXxX.hp.com
I can see the checkin status of the files on the solution explorer.

But I can not see any content in the Team Explorer. It's just empty. No root either.

Im using VS 2005, VS 2008 without any problems.
VS 2010 Beta 1 worked well too.

Oh, and I can open "View=>Other Windows=>Source Control Explorer" and see my source code.

What information can I provide to help you solve this issue?

Escape key no longer working in 2010 or 2008

Since I installed 2010 beta 2, my escape key doesn't work in VS08 or 2010. So if I am in the solution explorer and hit escape, nothing happens it doesnt return to my code window. If I am filling out the fields after using a prop code shortcut, and hit escape, nothing.

Any ideas? In the keyboard setting, escape is properly bound to the standard escape functions, I checked vs another machine without 2010 and it all matches.

TFS Web Access for 2010 Beta 2

I am installing VSTS 2010 Beta 2 at a client and I have a manager who just wants the Web Access on his machine. Is there a way to just install just the Team System Web Access and not a full blown version of Visual Studio for Beta 2 2010?

If so, where could I download just the Web Access?

Do you have any video walkthroughs? For example, I'm having trouble generating a complete dependency graph on a subset of my classes using the Architecture Explorer.

System.OutOfMemory Exception during Web Test

I am running a web test in VSTS Beta 2, which uploads a 20MB file. Web test records correctly but while writing the test results it gives an exception of System.OutOfMemory Exception. Can anyone please help me on this? What could be the problem. this works fine when I try to upload a 5Mb, 10MB and 15MB file. I need to have web tests till 50MB file upload. Thanks in advance for the help.

VSTS is identifying the entire rows and columns as a single grid control object in our application.As we want to retrieve data from cells for that object.Is there any method available to retrieve Childobjects,data from cells(rows and Columns) for the control type "Client".I have listed down the properties of the control type Client for your reference

Using VS 2010 beta 2 and vista (with Automation API update) I keep getting errors intermittently like the following:

Web Tests not working for onClick events of Submit Buttons

Hi....

I Have a application for which i need to create Web Tests.

My problem is that,No Search Button Click is working in Web Test which display 100s of records in GridView.
Also almost every page has hidden fields and Java script Code.

Googling Here and there is not helping me to run my Web Tests.Every sample shows a simple login page,but does not deals with complex issues like hidden fields or Gridview Selection.

To turn on the recorder log, set these registry entries:

I have a WPF app and the page (documents) has a pane with two ( Type and Search ) tabs. I want to perform the following actions:
1) Click on Search tab in the Documents page.
2) Do something
3) Close and reopen the documents page
4) Click on search tab again.
I get an error message for the 4th step, saying the control (setup tab) is hidden at this point.
Error message:
Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.Extension.FailedToPerformActionOnHiddenControlException: Cannot perform 'Click' on the hidden control. Additional Details:
TechnologyName: 'UIA'
ControlType: 'TabPage'
AutomationId: 'DocSearch'

I believe this is incorrect due to the following reason: If I copy paste the clicksearch method to UIMap.cs file and add search properties instead of using UIMap.designer.cs' definition I am able to successfully click on the tab the second time. But if use the recorded method then it says the control is hidden. I want to know why there is this difference. I would like to use the recorded method wherever possible. Is this is a bug?

Controlling the C++ Build process

Hi there.

I'm just getting started with creating an addin for VS10b2 for a unit test runner for native C++ projects using the Boost unit test framework. The plan is to make it similar to TestDriven.Net.

Looking at the samples, most seem to be concerned with modifying the Editor - I can't find anything related to controlling the build process. To work, a test fixture class would have to be built and linked into the test runner.

If someone could point me in the direction of an appropriate sample, or namespace under which to look, I'd greatly appreciate it.

VSTS2010 Beta2 - CodedUI test - Playback problem with Combo box

Hi,

Iam very new to VSTS, Iam testing WPF application with codedUI testing (using VSTS2010 Beta 2 Ultimate), while playback the generated script it is not recognizing the combo box selection.

ie, While recording I have selected names from the dropdown combo box and while playback the same script it is not selecting the name from the combo box list.

Please help me is there any way to change the setting or code.

Error importing data from CSV file

Hi

I build a Coded UI test that is running ok.

Now I am trying to get data from a CSV file to run the test several times, using a CSV file.

I saved the CSV file from Excel and tried to open it on VSTS 2010 and it always shows the message:
"Error trying to sample data from C:\Tempfiles\data.csv, please make sure the file is valid".

Any ideas ?

Remote UI Test Execution not executing all test iterations

Hi,
I am not sure if I should post here if I am running Beta1 or not?
I have been able to initiate test runs on a remote machine using the QTAgentServiceUI.bat
However not all tests are not getting executed and the controller gets stuck.. i.e. I ran 5 iterations (data source) of a same test. about 2-3 were visibly running and then nothing.
Even the controller does not show test completion or errors. I have to force a stop or abort.

Can someone guide me as to how this can be fixed?

Are the VS Team System Developer/Test/Architect editions now gone?
If not when will they be available for download?

If that are gone what is the mapping from old 2008 edition to new 2010 flavour?

Whats on the "Compare 2010 Products" page is not really sufficient as I am trying to figure out the impact from a licencing perspective and what we need to upgrade to - currently using the Developer edition.

Unable to register Test Agent with Test Controller

Hi,
I have installed VS 2010 Beta 2 Untimate Edition and the Bets2 Test Controller on Comp1 (Vista)
Then I installed Beta 2 Test Agent on Comp 2 (XP).
I cannot get the Agent to register with the Contoller.
I have already added all necessary permissions to the TeamTestAgent and TeamTestController accounts from lusrmgr.msc
The Controller can see the agent but shows it as Disconnected.
The Error given when I click Apply Settings in the "Configure Visual Studio Test Agent" app is ---
"Test Agent process is not started as it is not associated with any controller."
I really need to get this going since I have been posting issues with Beta1 then now Beta2 regarding the same. Maybe I am missing something small but its proving to be a waste of lot of time.
Any help is appreciated.

Test agent interactive mode failed to validate

I initially setup the test agent to run interactively as I'm wanting to try out the automated UI testing. But, the VM never validated and the error msg about permissions didn't help as I was using a domain service account that was granted admin persmissions on everything and in every group. I set the test agent to run as a service using the local network service account and then it validated.

But how do I get interactive mode to work?

TLM remote desktop display resolution to high and not affected by changes to native VM resolution

Connecting to a VM through the TLM results with a display resolution of 2960x1350 (as best as I can tell as it is very hard to read the screen). I connected to the VM directly with SCVMM and lowered the resolution, but no matter what I set it to, the resolution from the TLM remote desktop connection remained 2960x1350 and unchanged

When implementing some interfaces or when inheriting from some classes, it break unit tests projects using private accessor. I get this error :

To reproduce, in the main class library, I have this code and use Enterprise Library 3.0 in my reference (I set specific version to true):

Then I create a unittest project, create a project reference to the main assembly and create the private accessor. After that, I'm not able to compile anymore and get the error I already told.

Actually, I have this problem with the external projects : Enterprise Library 3.0 and Telerik.

Is there any way to get around this kind of problem?
