Visual Studio Design Mode Slow

So 2-3 days ago I installed visual studio 2008 on my AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core with 4GB of RAM using Windows 7 Professional. When I load a web project, I can view the source pretty easily without any delay. But if I am in the mark-up mode and decide I want to view the design mode, it takes minutes to a half an hour to load a single page even simple ones.

I've searched several forums and found threads dating 1 year+ back with hotfixes and suggestions but nothing of the more recent. On that note I am running VS2008 9.0.30792.1 SP. I'm about to give up my search for a solution to this problem... =(

Does anyone have any suggestions I'll try anything out of desperation now.

troubles with generating manifest

Hello All,

I probably do this post in inappropriate place, but I've not found better one...

Time after time, when I building my projects, I encounter following trouble: VS hungs for long time when generating manifest. I've determined that it occurs only when I am connected with internet; else no hungs.

Does anyone encounter such strange behavior? Maybe there are any solutions? Please help if you can

First off, I know this post doesn't belong here - but there doesn't seem to be a forum for general IDE issues anymore, and links provided by MSFT folk to any that may have existed in the past are just broken. This seems like the best fit, as it's been happening since the IDE was first set up.

Each day on start up of devenv (for VS 2008 TS) I get a crash. The event viewer info looks like:

It was suggested to run devenv with the /log command line switch to get some verbose logging info dumped to the ActivityLog.xml file, however - that file just ends abruptly like so:

No closing tag for activity.. And none of the messages are anything but informal. So I'm at a bit of a loss to explain what is going on. The second time it is run it will works ok - though we've come to find the IDE crashes quite regularly when using Silverlight during build.

OS is Win 2008 R2 x64. VS 2008 should have any and all service packs applied, as well as the OS. The only add-in is Coderush XPress, and TFS sidekicks one. I haven't installed any non-SP hotfixes that I know of. Detailed versions and info from help->about are:

Toolbox Missing Controls

I was working in Visual Studio 2005 on Vista with SP1 and the Update for Vista installed. I had been working with a Visual Basic / Smart Device / Windows CE 5.0 project. After testing on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Emulator and returning to modify the form, I found the Toolbox went into "Initializing Toolbox" before displaying and when it did finally display, I'm left with the following controls:

can't find product key to install visual studio 6.0

Hi friends,

I lost my visual studio 6.0 installation CD however, I had copied its content in my computer before all this happened.

when I run the setup located in its root directory then after few steps it prompt me to enter product key in two boxes... one of them will take a string of around three digits and second will take a string of around 6-7 digits.

I have searched for product key inside the directory but haven't found yet. it's been 3-4 hours and I am stuck on this.

please let me know in which directory and where exactly I can find the product key?

Task List tokens in Visual Studio 2008 default to original settings each time I reopen VS

We all use and love those Tokens //TODO: or 'HACK: when we write our code. I usually setup two more, HIGH and LOW and assign priority to them. But each time I go back to my Visual Studio 2008 environment they are gone and I'm back to the default tokens. This is very annoying since I might have some //HIGH: priority tasks setup, but I'm not able to see them until I add that task list token back again. This was not the case in 2005. You can find these settings under Tools|Options|Environment|Task List

Any help would be appreciated.

Data Form wizard in Visual Studio 2008?

Hi, I'm new to Visual Studio. I have Visual Studio 2008 installed. The course I'm studying, however, is built around Visual Studio 2005. This is a problem when I get to the part about using the Data Form Wizard. It seems quite useful in Visual Studio 2005, but it doesn't seem to exist in Visual Studio 2008. Is there sucah a thing as a Data Form Wizard in Visual Studio 2008 or at least an equivalent?

Hi all, I have my Windows 7 Enterprise installed and I need to install Visual Studio .NET 2003 in my machine as well as I need to maintain and support customers' projects which were mainly developed by using .NET 2003, 1.1 framework.

I am now facing error during the installation saying that it is not compatible with my system! I have tried a solution recommended in forum, which is to install Visual Studio .NET 2003 in Windows Virtual PC 2007 + XP Mode. It was my nightware when I found out that the Virtualization is not supported in my hardware and therefore I cant make use of XPM!

Please help before I made the last approach, which is to downgrade and have my Vista Business back!

vshost.exe taking half the cpu

Hi All,

My Visual Studio environement was working fine untill this morning. Every time I open a project within Visual Studio, a process called "nameoftheapplication".vshost.exe is run on the background, and takes half of the cpu. And worst when I try to run the application another process is created this time the name is "nameoftheapplication".exe and takes the other half of the cpu while not showing the application has it should.

The fact that it is happening when using Visual Basic or Visual C# indicates that the problem is kind of deep, If any one as any suggestion of things I could try to resolve the issue that would be great.

I should mention as well that compiled application that use to run well, don't show up at all anymore even run on their own. It could be a corruption of the framework, I don't know.

Full Trust Issue caspol.exe works on Vista but Not on Windows 7

I am trying to access project files on a network share, but I keep receiving the "Location is not trusted" dialog. I have tried the caspol.exe solution, but to no avail. My computer is using Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit), and the computer I'm connecting to is using Vista(64-bit). Also I'm using Visual Studio 2008.

When the following line is executed on a Vista machine it works fine, on Windows 7 it indicates it works but the trust issue still occurs when opening a project located on the share.

Executed under VS command prompt.

caspol -m =ag 1.2 -url file://\\Owner-PC\SharedData\* FullTrust

It informs that this will change the security, when answered with yes

it response successful on both Vista and Windows 7.

On Vista machine, can now access projects on the share.

On Window 7 machine, gets "Location is not trusted" dialog

I have searched for a couple of day now and have not been able to find a solution. I would really appreciate any help.

VS 2005 cannot run as administrator on Server 2008 R2

I have just installed Server 2008 R2 and every time I start Visual Studio 2005, I get the warning that I should run as administrator. Here are the steps I have taken:

- Turned off UAC, set up auto-elevate priveleges.
- In the shortcut properties, clicked on Advanced and selected Run as administrator.
- In the compatibility tab, selected Run this program as an administrator.
- Right-clicked directly on the shortcut and selected Run as administrator.

I have VS 2008 on the same computer and it does not have this problem. I run it and see (Administrator) in the title bar. Why is VS 2005 being stubborn?

How do I disable intellisense in VS 2008?

I'm using VS 2008, SP1, to write code in VB.NET. I'd like to be able to turn intellisense parameter lists and auto-completion lists off and on via a hotkey. I've had a go with the macros suggested here: http://blogs.msdn.com/vcblog/archive/2007/11/19/controlling-intellisense-through-macros.aspx

Those macros certainly don't make any difference to intellisense for VB, in fact, they reference C++ directly. Interestingly, whilst I don't get any errors from those macros, the options I can see in the "Tools | Options" dialog for C++ don't change even after running those macros.

Given that such macros are theoretically available, can anyone help me do the equivalent for VB? On the same lines, the macros use DTE.Properties - is there any way I can enumerate the available properties and items within them? - if I was able to do that, I might be able to figure out the intellisense bit for myself.

Visual Studio 2008, Server 2003, and Front Page extension problem

Installed on my XP system is visual studio 2008. When I do an open web site to a 2003 server it reports back that Front Page extensions may not be installed. They aren't, duh! Couldn't find the FPE in 2003 server then went to microsoft's site and was about to download the 64 bit version when I noticed that FPE are discontinued as of 2006, so why in the world is VS 2008 wanting to tell me that FPE are not installed, didn't somebody at Microsoft tell somebody else at Microsoft that the entensions have been discontinued? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=BAC7ABF9-3C78-44BB-8A72-6F8ED2AA0E8E&displaylang=en

Visual Studio 2008 : Toolbox doesn't work !

Hello,

I've a problem with Visual Studio 2008 version 9.0.21022.8 RTM. The toolbox contains no item (except html tags) when editing a web page. The same bug occurs when editing a windows form application. I tried to repair the installation and reset the toolbox but none of those actions solved the problem. I hadn't this bug with Orcas beta 2...

Here is a screen shot of the problem.

Does someone knows how to correct it ?

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 font rendering issue

I recently filed this issue as a bug on connect and was recommended to visit this forum for some suggestions. To quote the bug report:

With the exception of most dialog windows, all fonts rendered are fuzzy and discoloured around the edges (see the screenshot I will attach). This includes the code editor, the toolbar menus & pretty much everything else.

The strange thing is, the machine I installed on was purchased last week - 2 were bought at exactly the same time and have had virtually mirrored installations, yet the other machine displays the fonts perfectly smooth.

I uploaded the screenshot:

This is how the fonts look everywhere - menus, project explorer, start page, etc. The only exception is the Options dialog, which displays the fonts nice and smooth probably because it's not using WPF for the rendering. Has anyone else run into the same issue? I've tried reinstalling, no joy. If anyone has seen the same issue, please visit the bug report I made and vote it as important.

I have had Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition and Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition on my desktop (XP) and on my laptop (Vista). My question is am I able to install Visual Studio 2008 Professional and keep the express editions on there or do I need to remove the express editions?

I am trying to edit a script task written by someone else and can't get to the actual code!!

When I click on the "Design Script" button on the Script Task Editor window nothing happens (I would expect this to open a visual editor type tool)

When I try to write a new Script Task the same thing happens and I can't find anywhere to actually write the code.

I think a component of this software was not installed properly, might be a reference DLL that is missing?

Errors installing Visual Studio 2008 on Windows 7.

I'm relatively new to VS. I'm just installing it for our developers. So of course we now need it on Windows 7 (Windows 7 Pro Volume license).

When installing VS2008 from the disk (I tried full and default installs) it hanges when installing the Authoring Component. After about an hour it comes up with a message about errors in the install. Error logs lists every component as not installed. Authoring says not installed, others say it didn't attempt to install.

Is this a known issue or do I need to make sure my boss downloads the newest VS2008 disk and try again on a bit cleaner Win7 install?

I'm using Visual Studio Express 2008 and SQL Server Express 2008. When I'm creating a connection, the "Choose Data Source" dialog only lists the following data sources:

Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5
Microsoft SQL Server Database File

... should there be a "Microsoft SQL Server" or "Microsoft SQL Server Express" option?

Visual Studio 2005 (Standard) Service Pack 1 seems to have introduced a problem in CEditView. My application uses a view class derived from CEditView and will crash when print previewing this view. The SuperPad example application available from MS exhibits the same problem when recompiled with SP1 for Win32 (Debug or Release). Some characters must be entered into the SuperPad view first and then selecting print preview results in the crash.

The crash is due to an assignment to an unassigned pointer (pnCurDelta) in CPreviewDC::ComputeDeltas() (dcprev.cpp line 604 - "*pnCurDelta = mAttrib.tmAveCharWidth;").

Are you familiar with this issue?

I have just performed a new, clean install of the newly released Windows 7 Ultimate. I also installed Visual Studio 2008, SQL server 2005, and SQL Server 2008. I am running on an Intel I7 Processor, 9 gigs of RAM, Asus Rampage II motherboard.

After installing Visual Studio 2008 on Windows 7 whenever I try to create a new project in Visual Studio, I get the error: Requested registry access is not allowed. This same exact thing happened to me while I was running the Windows 7 RC. It took me days to fix it, and it had something to do with subinacl (which is a really old tool (another question, why isn't there a new updated subinacl-like tool that can access ALL of the registry keys??), and as I remember it, the first time I used it on my Windows 7 install, it completely hosed the sound and other devices on my pc.) I can't remember what I had to do to get it to work, and I can't believe that this is still a problem?! Yet people all over the place are still experiencing it. Isn't there a REAL fix that is recommended by Microsoft to fix this thing? Don't tell me it's not reproducable, because it easy to produce. Is Regini.exe better than subinacl.exe for fixing Windows 7, and do any of you out there know how to fix my problem without hosing my system again?

Can someone help me here? Is there a new tool now that windows 7 has been released that fixes it, and, is there a way to keep it from happening again??

Hello, I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the .COM reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 7600 RTM.

automatic visual studio 7x80 update fails repeatedly

An automatic MS update of visual studio 7x80 has been running and failing on my PC everyday for the past week or two. Visual studio is not software that I use and I'm not even sure that it is installed on my PC. How can I either resolve or turn off these automatic update attempts?

I'm migrating my trusty old XP dev system to Windows 7 (we skipped Vista), but I have to continue to use VS 2005 to support a VS2005/.NET 3.0 Winform application, and I've run into some issues/questions...

1) Is it still possible to install multiple versions of the .NET framework side-by-side? When I try to install .NET 3.0 (from my old MSDN disc), it says I should install it using Win 7 "features" instead. But it's not obvious how to install 3.0 as a feature, since 3.5.1 is already installed as part of Win 7. I realize that 3.5.1 is supposed to be a superset of 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, etc. But in the past, I've always maintained multiple versions of .NET side-by-side, just to insulate my apps from any backwards compatibility issues between .NET versions (this same dev system is also used for VS2008/.NET 3.5.1 and soon VS2010/.NET 4.0 apps).

2) I installed ONLY VS2005 Professional, but Win 7 Programs and Features shows that both Premier Partner and Professional are installed (I don't even have Premier Partner install discs!). And when I ran the VS2005 SP1 and the Vista/Win7 updates, each one ran twice... applying the changes to both Premier Partner and Professional, so apparently both editions are indeed installed. It didn't act like this on XP, and I installed VS2005 was installed from the same Professional edition disc

3) How can I configure Win 7 so that when I double-click a VS solution (or project) file it will launch VS running as administrator? Having to first launch VS as administrator and then manually opening the solution/project file from within VS is a slow workaround. (I suppose this really is a generic Win 7 question, not specific to VS)

4) The app runs fine if launched from VS2005, and I can build the .msi file in VS. But Windows Installer gets a 2869 error when it is installing the app from the generated .msi. Any ideas about this error in the context of VS2005/Win7?

Probably more to follow, but these will get me started. Any idea when there will be a VS2005 under Win 7 FAQ?

Error 1309 Error Reading eula.rtf file while installing visual studio 2008

I have downloaded visual studio 2008 sp1 (that 3.31 gigs) and I am trying to install that. While installing that it is showing a vague error and aborts. The error is as follows

Error 1309 : Error reading file c:\vs2008\program files\microsoft sdk\windows\v6\bootstraper\package\VSTOR30\en\eula.rtf verify that the file exist or that you can access it

The dialogue box shows the following error with the options abort, retry , ignore . I dont know where might be the error is. pls let me know if anyone have any clue

"Keyset does not exist" when clicking Publish

When I click on the Publish option under build, and go through the wizard, I get 2 errors, one saying "signtool reported an error 'Keyset does not exist'. I was able to do this a month ago.

What is this saying?

"Cannot find one or more components" Error When Executing Visual Studio 2008

Hello

I suddenly started to get the error "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application" when attempting to run Visual Studio 2008.

VS2008 had run without problems since I installed it some months ago.

I removed VS2008 and re-installed it. During the installation the "Cannot find one or more components..." error popped up several times, although the installation appeared otherwise successful.

VS2008 would still not run - same error.

Long story short, after using depends.exe to check which DLLs devenv.exe was loading (or trying to load), the issue turned out to be a DLL that had gone missing; specifically atl90.dll

C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC90.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21204.0_x-ww_5cf42c67\atl90.dll

When I restored this file from a backup, VS2008 loaded successfully.

I then removed and re-installed VS2008 once more, this time with no errors on installation.

I don't know what caused the DLL to go AWOL. Has anyone any similar experiences?

Missing Web Site Templates in VS 2008 Team Suite

I have a problem where whenever I try and create a new Web Site (New -> Web Site) the template box is completely empty and I can't continue. The normal project templates are fine, just the Web Site templates are missing. I checked the filesystem (ProjectTemplates directory) and everything seems to be there. I've tried "devenv /setup" and "devenv /InstallVSTemplates" but neither of them helped.

The only thing I can think of is that when I recently installed the VS 2008 Hotfix rollup or the Web Deployment Project something got messed up.

Has anyone else seen this and have a solution?

Problem with Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition on Windows XP SP2

Hello,
Let me inform you that i was working upon vs 6.0 Enterp. Ed. for a few months!
It was working quite well on my Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Greek.
A week ago i uninstalled it to install VS 2005 and VS 2008 Professional Editions English.
These were successfully installed!
Due to a problem within the code of a project i had created using vs 6.0 i was forced to install it again.
However the setup fails to complete with a messagebox saying "Setup was unable to create a DCOM user account in order to register 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\Tools\VS-Ent98\Vanalyzr\valec.exe' "
I noticed that VC++6.0 was not installed and after trying to run vb 6.0 i get a message "Can't find file ADO350.dll" !
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Should i uninstall VS 2005 and 2008 Professional Editions and reinstall VS 6.0 and, if it works properly,install vs 2005 and vs 2008 again?

All the info I seem get is related to publishing to the web which is not what I want to, I want to put it onto a CD.

The quick publising wizard with Visual studio 2008 express doesn't allow me to specify the folder where the application will be put on the target pc......any help welcome

I have a virtual x64 box with 8gb ram and 4 processors - on this virtual box I run SQL Server 2005 9.00.3310.00 SP2 Enterprise Edition (64-bit). With this I have VS2005 Busines Intelligence Development studio intalled

On the same machine runs another application - a asp.net app for internal use only. For debugging this application - there are errors - I need to install VS2008 somewhere in the network. It turned out that it would be best, so the IT deparment told me, to install it directly on this box the application runs on.

My question now, is this a problem? Can there be any side effects with sql server 2005? As far as I know there are none but installing vs2008 with Teamexplorer and sp1 and all hotfixes - and then breaking something would be bad.

I know this sounds not like very good pracitce - mixing production and test environment - but ignoring this, could there be any major issues?

Errors in trying to reinstall/repair Visual Studio 20098

Dear Group,

my machine (XP 64 ) crashed, and when it rebooted, Visual Studio 2008 ceased to work, producing errors of the form "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application". However the VS 2008 would not repair itself, or even uninstall itself, producing the same errors. I followed some of the suggestions on this forum, and even ran the uninstall program mentioned elsewhere (It also produced errors of the same form). My last attempt at reinstalling produced this error log.

Could any one please assist me with this?

VS 2008 Memory Usage Creep - Eventual Crash

This is driving me absolutely batty!!!!!

Have a VS 2008 project open. Starts at about 35,000K and, as soon as I start typing something, creeps up rather quickly to over 1GB. I've notice if I minimize the screen, the memory calms down again, but, as soon as I start using the IDE, I get the same problem. Eventually I crash and have to restart. I'm running VS 2008 version 9.0.30729.1 SP on XP Pro 5.1.2600 SP2. I have 2GB ram.

Editing XML Files in MergeModule projects. - no RT validation

I have some XML files that follow schema definitions. I know the Instance docs are valid, and I know VS2008 can find and load the schemas correctly.
The files are currently part of a MergeModule project, that is used by a Setup project.

When I open the XML files from the MergeModule, The XmlEditor partially works. Intellisense works correctly, but Real-Time validation does not work at all. Meaning I can see what Elements/Attributes are available at any given time, but I don't get the blue-squiggly on missing required attributes, or invalid attributes, or missing close tags, you get the idea...

If I create a "Blank Solution" and use Add Existing Item to pull the same file from the same directory, real-time validation works correctly. so I feel I've narrowed the problem down to something about the MergeModule project killing the real-time validation, but would be happy to try anything at this point. My web searching has only uncovered a similar symptom in a custom project type, in that case the custom project type was to blame, but Merge Module is Built-in.

Any suggestions for a fix?

My hardware is a Lenovo T500 with Windows 7 x64 . Works without problems in other areas.

I'm using VS2008 Professional and working on converting a 4GL legacy application with 1000 forms to WPF.

Until now I've converted the original simple screen structure the WPF .xaml and xaml.cs (containing only InitializeComponent() in the constructor).

For the project I've used as non-standard libraries some from wpf cal (prism) and Infragistics WPF DataGrid and Combobox.

The forms are derived usercontrols, which I've developed. I've tested this scenario wth one sample form from my old application.

Then I converted all forms of my old solution to this WPF usercontrol and organized it in 18 projects like the original structure.

Now I have a solution with

- an Infrastructure project, referenced by all generated projects
- 18 projects with a total of 1000 .xaml and 1000 .xaml.cs files (no special logic until know, only controls bound to empty structures).
- a Viewer project

The Viewer project opens the assemblies of the 18 projects, reads the typenames and fills a tree. Clicking on an element in the tree dispays the usercontrols.
Works fine.

Now the problem which I try to solve since last week:

After starting the project and ending it (by x on the app or by stopping it per debugger), I right click on a project and select "Add item ...".

Then VS2008 hangs up, or gets a stack overflow in mscorlib, or crashes or says "trying to write into protected memory". Often the appearance of this VS2008 instance gets corrupted. Sometimes the templates dialog appears, but hovering over the buttons lets the text disappear...

I've installed Windows 7 x86 and VS2008 and SP1 on an additional partition, but with no better result.

I started Windows in safe mode, checked the drivers many times, but could not find another behaviour.

Installing SharpDevelop seems to solve the problem, as it can start and stop the solution many times, until now without problem. (But I want to stay with Visual Studio).

VS2010 Beta2 didn't help me, too. It seems not to have the start/stop -> crash problem, but hangs up when clicking on xaml source code (I've setup "Always open in editor mode" for xaml-files).

Has anybody a hint, what may be going wrong?

Can not install WCF for the VS2008 installation

Hi, I got a problem installing VS2008 (based on Win2003 + IIS6). Before that, I uninstalled all the existing .net frameworks and then installed .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and 2.0 sp1. After narrowing down the issue, I found the WCF is unable to be installed. I noticed that IIS7ConfigurationLoader is used and is it possible that my IIS6 is not recognized properly? Thanks in advance!

How to set up VS 2008 to run on Local Machine?

I am new to VS and have picked up an application that was created for our company that is hosted on a server. I was wondering how I would go about setting it up in VS so that I can RUN the program on my local machine before publishing any changes to the server. I can copy the entire project from the server to my computer, and view and edit the entire project on my machine, but I'm not sure how to actually run or view the web app on my local machine...
