Can't install vs 2012 update 1
-
Monday, December 03, 2012 9:23 PM
It fails to down load Cab8.cab. This happens whether or not I use /layout and it happens on both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Both machines have VS 2010 and .net 4 currently installed. Both machines are 64 bit.
Here is the log message from the windows server 2008 r2 machine, I have included the successful download of Cab7 for comparison:
[12AC:105C][2012-12-03T13:20:11]: Acquiring package: vc_librarycore_VSU, payload: cabFA7120EB398C75A36F8936088A52DC67, copy from: J:\Dev\Downloads\VS 2012\Update1\packages\vc_librarycore\cab7.cab

That's it. I just goes straight to "Prompt for source ... " for Cab8.
Any ideas?

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your post.
If you mean you failed to download that pacakge. You may have to check your network environment.
Could you copy layout file from a healthy machine to the two machine you mentioned?
Will the update installed successfully?

The problem has affected all machines that we have tried in my organization. We have tried 3 separate machines as noted in my previous post. Should we really try more?
Since it downloaded the first 7 Cab files just fine do you really think it was a network problem?

Hi Rob,
I need more details to disanose this issue.
Please use the following tools to help me gather full instalaltion logs:
Use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link with us.
Actually, I can download the update with /layout option without problem. Your error may due to network or some software blocked the download process.
To test this, I would recommend you find a machine at home or with different network setting to download the file. Then install it to your corrupt machine to see if the installation was blocked.
By the way, can you disable your AV software and do a clean boot of your OS? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Hi Rob,
I see the same issue here:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/84373c2b-9a89-4bc7-a015-fe2bebaf8054
Your porblem seems not related to network. I'll try report this issue.

Hello Rob, I would like to see the full log. Please use the instructions Barry provided to do this. "Use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link with us."

Anders,
Unfortunately, your log file is incomplete, and doesn't include the dd_vsupdate logs. If the update is still running when you collect the logs, then the file can be locked and doesn't get collected.
Are you still having trouble with cab8? If yes, where are you geographically?
Since we have a very high success rate, this is not a widespread problem, so we think it might be a replication problem to a limited set of servers... so we're looking to figure out how to identify the exact source of the problem, which is a bit tricky! :-)
Hope we can help,

hello, i have just tried to download update 1, i get the same problem with cab8. i am situated in Oberursel, it's close to Frankfurt in Germany. i ran collect.exe, it's a couple of dd_vsupdate*.logs in the zip. here it is :
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=BAA0251E5065D39D!106
is there a workaround fot this problem, can i use some other link? we have msdn, i still haven't seen update 1 for vs2012 as iso, for tfs 2012 there is a iso-file. yesterday i saw on msdn a link for the iso-file for vs2012 update on thepiratebay.se/torrent. i am still considering this possibilty....

Thank you Anders,
These logs still don't have the vsupdate log in them. I'm looking for a file named dd_vsupdate_KB2707250_*.log
Right now, we don't have an alternative you can use. If I can get the right log file, I can dig deeper into the problem.

I found those logs in my AppData\Local\Temp. I am not sure why they did not get included by collect. I have uploaded a zip to skydrive.live.com/?cid=7E02822BC4C6D6F5&id=7E02822BC4C6D6F5%21106
My location is near San Diego, CA

skydrive.live.com/?cid=7E02822BC4C6D6F5&id=7E02822BC4C6D6F5%21106
I get a warning about maybe it's deleted, expired, or I don't have access...

Sorry, no.
If you want to try again, go for it. An alternative would be to grab enough of the log, from when it starts with Cab7.cab to when it ends after vc_librarycore86.msi

hello, here is dd_vsupdate_KB2707250_*.log :
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=BAA0251E5065D39D!107
it was in directory c:\users\<userid>\appdate\local\temp. if you are going to fix collect.exe, collect.exe needs a admin-account, in my organisation (and probably many more) developers has 2 accounts. a userid without admin but with web-access and a loc_admin_<userid> with admin but without web-access. i must start collect.exe with loc_admin_<userid> and it's hard for collect.exe to find the dd_vsupdate_* in the other temp-directory

Something on your machine looks like it's not working as I'd expect. Can you try rebooting your machine? If that doesn't work try installing any .MSI and see if that works.

hello. i did the download on my private computer this morning, it was successfull. i then sent the cab8.cab-file pr. email to my company-computer and used this file to overcome the problem in download. a second file had the same problem, cab9.cab in ..\packages\vc_librarycore86. i used this file from my private computer in the same way and could complete the download on the company-computer. you guys has some problem with these 2 files. perhaps some security-configurations in our network.
i am now fine, i eventually got the update 1 und i am not dependant on a solution here. in 3 months i will test if update 2 is better.

Hi Anders,
Thank you for the update and I am happy to hear that you were able to find a workaround. Your log files indicate that you were experiencing an HTTP connection error. If you are still interested in debugging the problem, you can launch the following URL and let us know the result:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=270394&clcid=0x409
If this URL directs you to cab8.cab, there is no need for you to take any action with the file; this is only to test file accessibility from your location.
Thank you for your patience,

Hi Rob,
It looks like the issue you are experiencing could be related to a conflicting file in the directory from which you are installing VSUpdate. Please attempt to run vsupdate_KB2707250.exe from a clean directory (a directory that contains no other files) and let me know if that helps.
Thank you,

I have McAffe installed.
Can you please put the rest of the cabs available somewhere?

Do you have access to the McAfee virus scan report that might indicate why it is flagging these cab files as a problem? It would be great if you could share the report with us so we can see if there is something we can do on our end.

Yes, cab8.cab and cab9.cab are the two that have caused users trouble with Visual Studio 2012 Update 1. It seems to be a Virus Scan-related issue.
However, this week we have released Visual Studio 2012 Update 2. We recommend that you install this update instead. Please let us know if you are also unable to install Update 2.

Hi:
It appears cab files, cab8.cab and cab9.cab, are not signed in the following folder: Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 (KB2707250)\packages\vc_librarycore
I downloaded by right-clicking and saving as:
cab8.cab --> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=270394&clcid=0x409
cab9.cab --> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=282927&clcid=0x409Please fix ASAP for Updater 2
-
Tuesday, April 09, 2013 4:38 PM
Thank you for the additional information, Yama. We took a look at the files and they appear to be signed. However, you might run into a problem if you do not have the latest Root Certificate Authority installed. Please install KB931125 for the operating system that you are using and let us know if this fixes the issue.
Thanks again,
-Kelly-
