AnswerAdding items from "Dialog Editor" to Wizard-created dialog box in VS 2005

In a Visual Studio Project I have a Wizard created dialog box showing [Apply] and [Exit] Buttons.   I would like to add a Text Box item and a Folder Browser item, but I can't find them in the dialog Editor list.  Furthermore I can't even drag and drop a Button item from the toolbox onto the dialog box.  While I seem to be able to Copy I certainly can't Paste.

After copying an item from the toolbox, when I right click on the dialog box I am invited to "Insert Active X control" but if I click on that I just get a long list of items that I have no idea which one to use if indeed I should choose one.  I have looked through "Help" but all I seem to get are code suggestions, particularly relating to adding items to the toolbox.

Is anyone aware of a simple instruction as to how to enable drag and drop from the "Dialog Editor" toolbox onto a dialog box, please?

Also, when I right click on a toolbox item and select 'Choose Items', the Text Box items are already checked but do not display in this toolbox.  The Text Box item does display in other toolboxes but they are greyed out.  Also, any idea how I can get the textbox into the "Dialog Editor" toolbox?  Presumably the same rule would apply to the "Folder Browser Dialog" item.  I note that I was able to add the "FileListBox" item to the "Dialog Editor" toolbox but it was greyed out.

I am using VS2005 in an XP SP2 environment.

    Hi Fortran_User_WA,

    Thank you for your reply.

Based on your description, it seems that .NET Framework 2.0 cannot be installed on your machine.

Could you please try the following steps for further troubleshooting?
    - Create a new Administrator account on your machine
    - Log in this new account
    - Clear the previous failure installation of Visual Studio 2005: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907965
    - Use Cleanup Tool to remove .NET Framework 2.0
    - Install Visual Studio 2005 again

If any problem during the installation, please try to use collect tool to collect the log files of Visual Studio 2005 from your "%temp%" folder?
    http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

You can upload your log files to SkyDrive and post the link back here.

    Steps:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start menu >> Run... >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install Visual Studio 2005
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
    - Upload vslogs.cab file

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know. :)

    Hi Fortran_User_WA,

    Thank you for your post.

    Some clarification with you:
Which kind of project are you developing now? It seems that you want to create one MFC project using C++, right?

If yes, this forum is meant for questions regarding Visual Studio setup and installation. For your concern, you should post in the appropriate language forums:

    Visual Basic: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/visualbasic/

Thanks very much for your time.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have explained the problem too well.  It is purely a Visual Studio problem.

I am trying to use the Visual Studio "Dialog" Application Wizard in conjunction with an IVF FORTRAN program.

The VS2005 Wizard creates a dialog box with [Apply] and [Exit] buttons.  I want to add a "Text Edit" box so that I can fetch into my program what the user enters into it.  However, I cannot drag and drop a "Text Editor Box" item from the "Dialog Editor" toolbox into the basic Dialog Box created by the Wizard.  It should be possible to do this and indeed it would take me a long time to learn how to do it through code.  From the choice of Visual Studio forums available this looked like the only one that might be applicable.

I have subsequently tried to re-load VS 2005.  Unfortunately I got an error - it wouldn't complete.  I then checked out the "best practice" method for installing VS 2005.
    • I logged in as Administrator.  Unfortunately this user is not logged into the internet.
    • I was able to delete all entries from the %temp% directory OK, but
    • when I tried to run the program "Guided_Help" it failed with a message to the effect that a URL was invalid.

So I then ran msconfig as directed for XP users.  In the "General" Tab I selected "Selective Startup" and de-selected the suggested 3 of 4 check-box items.  I then went into the "Sevices" Tab and tried to disable all non-Microsoft Services but it wouldn't complete correctly when I clicked [OK] - it gave an error message (sorry I can't remember what it was - something about not being able to remove a service and that I may need to login as Administrator even though I was logged in as Administrator!).

I then tried again with a "Normal Startup" in the "General" Tab to deselect items in the "Services" Tab but it ended up automatically reverting to "Selective Startup" in the "General Tab" and all check box items were selected except for the one that was supposed to be selected!

Anyway, in the "Services" Tab I deselected the McAfee Check Box items and it kept the items in the "General" Tab as I had set them before making the changes in the "Services" Tab.  I then re-installed VS2005 (repair mode) as Administrator and it still didn't finish correctly.  It gave a message box with the message:

"Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 has encountered a problem during setup.  Seutp did not complete correctly."

It asked me to send an error report but, because I had no access to the Internet I saved it to a file.  The final part of the log file was:

    Hi, YiChun Chen.

Yes, I was able to get VS 2005 re-loaded successfully.

Unfortunately the VS 2005 Dialog Editor still misbehaves for me in that I cannot drag the "Edit Control" item from the tool box and drop it into the dialog box.  Do you have a suggestion as to what forum I should ask about that, please?
