error vs2010: The project type is not supported by this installation.

I recently installed vs2010 and tried to load a 2010 project and got the following error:
"The project type is not supported by this installation."
The only thing different about this project is that it should be running as a "web application projects" type, but I'm not sure what the problem could be.
so far, I've tried the following with no success:
(1)run "devenv /setup"
(2)regsvr32.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectAggregator.dll"

Hi Kennydust,
Thank you for your post.
Some clarification with you:
What's the exact error message you got?
What kind of VS2010 project do you want to open? one "Web application" project?
Which edition of VS2010 are you running now?
Based on your description, it seems that you want to open one ASP.NET project, right?
If yes, firstly, could you please help me to check whether the VS2010 product you installed support web development?
Please see:
For VS2010 Express products:
http://www.microsoft.com/express/Charts/VisualStudio-Express-2010-Feature-Chart.aspx
For VS1010 retail products:
http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products
(Please expand the node of "Product Feature")
Secondly, if you're running VS2010 retail products like Professional edition, Premium Edition, could you please check Help Menu >> About Microsoft Visual Studio >> Installed products? Please check whether "Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010" has been installed properly.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Yichun Chen

Try open your Visual Studio project files .cproj (C#) for example in notepad, remove the ProejctTypeGuids, save and open again. Hopefully it resolve your issue or would give you more input on the actual problem.
it might be you are using ASP.NET MVC 3 which require manual update on your project files. More refer to

I add my thanks to kimwee. Removing the ProjectTypeGuids via notepad++ then opening the solution eliminated the "project type not supported" error.
Not sure why YiChun Chen's post is marked as the solution when kimwee provided the real answer.

another solution(MVC 3 Razor): <ProjectTypeGuids>{E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401};{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{fae04ec0-301f-11d3-bf4b-00c04f79efbc}</ProjectTypeGuids>

Hi all,
You can try installing following plugins if you MVC project is not opening properly with your Visual Studio2010.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=1491
Install that plugins(2nd Download Option) and try restarting ur VS2010.

Monday, October 08, 2012 10:58 PMThank you _ Turbot _ - this worked for me. It has been driving me insane for about three days. I am happy to say that removing the ProjectTypeGuids element data, not the element itself, but the data worked and I was able to get the project to load.

Monday, October 29, 2012 12:58 PMTurbot (or kimwee, it seems), thank you for your suggestion, it worked for me as well. I think yours should be marked as the answer, not Yichun's.
