Install Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate x86 RTM failed on Windows 8 Enterprise x64 RTM

I installed Windows 8 Enterprise x64 RTM on a VMWare Workstation 8 virtual machine. Windows 8 runs great, but not activated yet. Then I tried to install VS 2012 Ultimate x86 RTM on Windows 8 virtual machine and got the error:

I thought it might be VC++ runtime package issue, so I installed both VC++ 2012 runtime x86 and x64, individually, but still got the same error. I also double checked file checksum for both downloaded iso files, no problem. Here is installation log file: VS 2012 installation log

Can somebody help on that? Thanks in advance!

Are the VMs connected directly to the Internet, through an authenticated proxy, or not at all (firewalled or no connection)?

Heath, thanks for taking a look at it. I configured VM to use NAT network adapter, so it is directly connected to internet and internet access from VM has no problem.

Same Problem for me. Installed Windows 8 RTM with a Pro Key under VMWare Workstation 8.0.4, then tried to Install VS 2012 Ultimate RTM - same error as you. I don't use the WebInstaller but the Full DVD.

Exact same issue. Fresh Windows 8 Pro RTM Install, Fresh VS 2010 Pro RTM Install. I've tried installing the C++ off MSDN, Win 8 SDK. No luck. Please advise, I'm testing VS2012 for my whole company.

Did you try copying the image to the VM's drive, expand the ISO and run the install from there?

Think I found the issue. Download was incomplete, trying again.

dunion, thanks for suggestion. I copied everything to VM's hard drive and installed from there, no luck, same error.

Mike, I downloaded and installed twice, exact same error. No idea what else I could try.

I get the same problem as well.

cab17.cab is reported as corrupt in the log file. I am also mounting the ISO file as a drive and installing from that.

I redownloaded the image from MSDN, everything went smooth afterwards. Just make sure your file size is 1.4gb.

Thanks, Mike. This time I used web installer and it installs fine. Weird thing is that I downloaded full DVD ISO twice and after download I used HashCalc to get downloaded ISO file's SHA1 value which is exact same as posted in MSDN. No idea how it gets corrupted.

Edit: I guess downloaded ISO file is fine, but the way VM accesses it might have problem. I used Virtual CloneDrive to mount ISO as BD-ROM drive in host OS and VM shares that drive to access VS installer. I suggest, if you have the same issue, burn ISO to DVD or extract files in host OS and then copy to VM, or just use web installer and let VS installer download while installing.

I used the connect to VM option in hyper-v and through the connect window inserted the disk as ISO. You may be right about the way it reads the ISO being a problem.

Extracting the files also had the same problem, going the web installer route bleh.

Do make sure you verify the hash of the ISO, and if you do burn it to DVD make sure you use the burning software's "verify" option. It may take longer to burn, but can save you a lot of time later because of a corrupted install due to a bad burn.

I am having a similar issue with the 2012 installation under a fresh installation of Windows 8 Enterprise. A different package fails, but the setup log points to one of the dependency installation files as being corrupted.

I have been using the ISO downloaded from MSDN (en_visual_studio_premium_2012_x86_dvd_920758.iso), which is mounted directly in Windows 8 and this is where I run the installer from.

Is there a direct link to the Web Installer so I could try that? I have the ISO and I have a license key, but I do not have the ability to log in to the MSDN Subscriber Downloads area directly (the MS Partner Program Benefits grant us licenses but only one person in the organization is granted actual access to the MSDN Subscriber Downloads area and they have to distribute installation media internally).

Scratch that. Somehow I have access to the MSDN Subscribers area right now, and am able to reach the Web Installer download directly. The Web Installer worked perfectly.

Same issue with Hyper-V ISO mounting.

EDIT: The problem was caused by corruption of the file on transferring from USB stick with Windows 8 RC or RTM, or my previous BIOS.

If many people have this issue perhaps there was a corruption issue with the prior beta versions. But it's hard to say so the correct solution is to just copy/download the file again.
