Error 1935

I am attempting to install AVG free antivirus software on an older Gateway laptop which was donated to my woodworking club. Each time I attempt to install it, I get the following error:
AVG Software Installer
Setup error
Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC90.ATL, version ="9.0.30729.4148, publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="86",type="win32". Please referto Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0800736FD.I've run Windows Update and Windows Defender. The machine seems to be up to date and clean. AVG tech support has given me several detailed suggestions, which I've followed without resolving the problem.
Most recently, I was advised to re-install Visual C++ using vcredist_x86.exe. That attempt also failed, with the following error message:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Setup
Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC90.ATL, version ="9.0.30729.4148, publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="86",type="win32". Please referto Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0800736FD.I got a very similar error message when I attempted to install Open Office.
I would appreciate any advice that would get me past this roadblock.
Thanks,
Doug Kish

You can try the recommended fix from Microsoft support -
"Cause - An unsuccessful install of prior Windows Updates OR Custom MSI packages
could have left over faulty registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS"To resolve apply this fix.
If this would not help, you may also try this solution from Microsoft.

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice.
I tried' MS Fix it' twice with no success.
I was also unable to complete the other solution relative to error code 1935. The solution suggests I'll be prompted to "Run as Administrator". That prompt did not appear. I am signed on as a user with administrator rights. However, trying to run the script suggested merely returns the message that FSUTIL requires administrator rights.
I also skipped ahead to see if Control Panel/Programs and Features lists Microsoft .NET Framework. It does not.
Do you have any further suggestions?
Thanks for your time.

You should tell what Windows version you run first. May be your version of Windows is too old. Seems that there is no .NET installed on your computer, also. Most of us take by default that people have at least Windows XP installed on their machines (the oldest version supported by Microsoft). You often see on MSDN the introductory system tip: This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you.
May be this is your case.

Hi d1kish,
Welcome to the MSDN forum.
Based on your description, you have some problems of installing your Visual Studio, so I’d like to move the thread to Visual Studio Setup and Installation, I think you will get better support there.
Thanks for your understanding.
Regards,
Elegentin

Hi d1kish,
Thanks for your post.
Please refer to this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2009/05/20/collect.aspx to gather some logs for me. After that, you can refer to this page http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65 to upload the vslogs.cab under %temp% folder to SkyDrive and share it with us.
Additionally, could you find "pending.xml" from your OS? If so, please backup this file and then rename it.
After that, try to install that package again.
Best regards,
Barry Wang [MSFT]

My Windows version is Vista Home Premium. How would I determine if .NET is installed?
Thanks for your attention.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm actually trying to install AVG free. Multiple attempts to install have resulted in the 1935 error.
When I checked Windows Update history, I see that 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86' installation has failed multiple times on this laptop.

Hi d1kish,
You can use this tool http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx to verify .NET Framework on your OS.
In case you also have .NET Framework error when installing. What's your error message?
To solve this issue, we need to analyze your logs. Could you please share your logs to me by referring to this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2009/05/20/collect.aspx?
"However, trying to run the script suggested merely returns the message that FSUTIL requires administrator rights."
When you open CMD by search from files, you can right click the command prompt and choose run as Administrator to gain Admin rights.

Barry,
Sorry to be so long in responding. I've finally got a block of time to work on this problem. I've run collect.exe, but I'm having trouble setting up a shared folder in Dropbox.
I see no way to modify a folder to share with everyone. I created a new folder using "Sharing", but it seems to require actual email addresses. No "Everyone" is option displayed and typing in "Everyone" returns an invitation to key in an actual email address.
Would you mind giving me an email address you have access to?
Meanwhile, I'll work through the rest of your email.
Thanks,
Doug

Please ignore previous email. I'm not sure how I got sidetracked to Dropbox. Will try to upload the logs to SkyDrive.

Barry,
I have uploaded vslogs.cab to my SkyDrive Public folder. My user account is in the name of Douglas Kish.
I searched for pending.xml and got about 60 hits dating from 2008 through 2010. Can I safely delete any of these or should I rename them all?
I see you've posted another message. I'll move on to that on next.
Thanks,
Doug Kish

Barry,
I used the .NET verifier and got: Product verification succeeded! for the default search on .NET Framework 2.0.
I ran collect.exe again and posted the new vslogs.cab(1) file to SkyDrive.
By the way, after finding the many pending.xml files (and not renaming them), I ran Windows Update again with the usual result: Error 1935.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Doug,
Please right click the folder you want to share and copy the share link to me.
Or you can send the link to me via v-barryw@microsoft.com . I'm not able to find your logs now.
For those pending.xml file, please donot modify them at this time. I haven't found a article to describe this issue.
Additionally, I've checked the error, it means"ERROR_SXS_UNTRANSLATABLE_HRESULT" "An HRESULT could not be translated to a corresponding Win 32"
So please verify .NET 3.0 on your OS too, Windows Vista have .NET 3.0 also.
Thus, could you please also have a look at this page http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-1935-assembly-component-microsoft.html
Although it is for VC 80, the solution can be also available for your error.
If you have updated your issue, please feel free to let me know.

Barry,
I emailed you the vslogs, as you requested.
I also verified that .NET 3.0 is installed on this laptop.
I looked at the VC 80 solution and am reluctant to pursue it just yet. It involves uninstalling the .NET Frameworks and:
-I don't know how to reinstall .NET Frameworks,
-The solution involves modifying Windows registry, and
-The vslogs may suggest a better solution to you.
Please advise.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Doug,
After you have verified .NET Framewrok 2.0 and 3.0,you may see the result at the last 15 line of the verification log like this ".NET xx verifies successfully/failed".
You should check their status.
Anyway, for repair .NET 2.0 and 3.0 on your OS, please refer to this blog:
I've checked the logs and here are some details:
"[07/31/12,09:47:05] ***ERROR EVENT*** : SYSTEM CHECK: : One instance of setup running Failed"core error:

The issue may due to corrupt .NET Framewrok 3.0 Assembly.
Since .NET 3.0 is embeded on Windwos Vista so please follow the blog post to use "SFC /scannow" to repair your system file.
Hope this info can help.

Barry,
Thanks for your research and your suggestions. I plan to attempt follow the instructions in the blog post for Repairing .NET Framework 2.0/3.0 files on Windows Vista.
I hope that resolves the problem, as the Registry work is above my pay grade.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

Barry,
Attempted above mentioned repair. After cmd line Run as Administrator, I entered:
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
After some seconds, I got:
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.
Unless I made an error keying in the command, it looks like the file repair service won't run on this laptop.
Our club's monthly meeting is Saturday. There was discussion of replacing the laptop. I'll see if the powers that be want to go that route.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Doug,
It seems the command was right.
The issue may indicates that your OS has some problems.
I suggest you try to repair your OS first.
To do this,I recommend you ask here :http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_install
