It installed fine for me,  though I don't know what has changed except a minor version update.

The file stopped there. I should mention that I ran the install on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit with SP1. A colleague ran the install in Windows 8 Consumer Preview (whatever the most recent one was called), and he got no errors, and a ton of these dd_vs_update files in his Temp folder with a lot more info in them, so my file was so short since the installer process crashed.

    Hi Robert Slaney,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

It seems that lots of our customers have this kind of error when installing the updates. So I may have to report this to Microsoft Connect: http://connect.microsoft.com/

Then our product team will have a look at this issue. But could you please show me your OS version? Or if you have installed any other Microsoft products , maybe that will show the details more clear. I think something should do with this Module: igdumd32.dll.

    Best regards,

    Hi Robert Slaney,

Have you tried this offline package? Maybe the offline package can be installed successfully

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29297

Web installer cause some unexpected errors when installing.

If offline package still not work. I will report it.

    Please show us your result.

    Thanks.

Thank you for reporting this issue. I have a few questions to better understand your environments:

    1. Is everyone in this thread running x64?
    2. Is your machine up to date with at least all critical fixes on Windows Update or Microosft Update?

Also, does anyone have a .dmp file they could share? Once way to generate this would be to run vs_update.exe (or whatever you saved it as) within Visual Studio 11:

    1. Start the Developer Command Prompt from the Start Menu.
    2. Run: devenv /debugexe <path\to\vs_update.exe>
    3. Press F5 on your keyboard.
    4. When the exception occurs, click on Debug->Save Dump As.

You can post your .dmp files online and send me a private message with the path, or open a bug on http://connect.microsoft.com/visualstudio and we can take a look.

Thank you for helping us diagnose this issue.

We found a similar issue in the TechNet forums: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/systemcenterservicemanager/thread/af32509d-e7a6-4288-8558-695857228820

Please update your graphics drivers and see if that resolves the issue.

    Heath,

Updating my graphics driver (for Intel 4 Series Chipset) resolved the problem for me, I was able to successfully run the April update for VS 11 Beta afterwards. Thanks for figuring it out!

Setting DisableHWAcceleration = 1 did the trick for me. I'm running W7/64/ENT. What I think is funky about my setup is that I'm running Citrix Xen Desktop 5.5 and they insist on doing installing their own display driver and disabling the Glass effects.
