Install is failing saying i have an earlier version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

Question

While trying to install Visual Studio 2008 Express SP1 C# edition i get a Requirements and Software Prerequisites problem.  The description in the box reads An earlier version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on the system that must be updated to SP1 before installation can proceed. Please update all other versions of Visual Studio 2008 to SP1 level by visiting Microsoft Update, and then install Visual Studio 2008 Express SP1.  

 

Okay i went into program files and made sure there is no visual studio 2008 install on my computer.  There is not.  The error also provided a link to the VS 2008 SP1 update or install so i went there and downloaded it.  When i try to run it, it fails telling me it cannot find a VS 2008 install on my machine.  I don't even understand why Visual studio express 2008 even cares if VS 2008 is on my computer because it should work regardless.

 

Is there maybe something in my registry that is making the VSE 2008 install think VS 2008 is on my machine?
