Auto indent in HTML

I want to know if VS 2010 can automatically indent html tag on the spot. For example, when I want to insert something inside block tag, e.g. <body>, the IDE will automatically indent for me without me pressing tab after i press enter for new line. I know that i can right click and reformat all the code but sometime, organize your work while coding make your life feel better

VS 2010 beta2 cursor placement problem

I have been using VS2008 for a while but since switching to 2010 Beta I've noticed one issue that has me dumfounded, whenever I try to add my includes in C++ (#include) as soon as I type the # the cursor jumps back to the beginning of the line and I have to move the cursor back to the right of the # to continue, I don't always remember so at the time so I find that I have 'include#' instead of '#include'. I was wondering if this is a setting that I have to change or if it is in fact a problem. I have never had this issue in VS2008.

This also happens with brackets { and }

I'll check for responses often so please don't think I'm ignoring you

Blurry Text with VS 2010 Beta 2

I know that Beta 2 was supposed to fix the font blurring issues many have reported in B1. However, I am still having severe blur issues when I load VS, and only the Solution Explorer seems to be immune.

I have enabled ClearType and gone through the ClearType tuning process, but the problem persists. It impacts all menus and the text editing area.

At this point, using 2010 is impossible due to the amount of blur I am seeing. Any thoughts on a workaround?

Unable to ctrl-drag-drop to repeat text immediately after the original

Something I've done frequently for years in past versions of Studio is to repeat selected blocks (or single lines) of text immediately after the original using a tiny, quick drag-drop motion with my rt. hand while holding down the ctrl-key with my left. In Beta 2, ctrl-drag-drop works fine when the drop location of the mouse is anything other then at the beginning (before the 1st char) of the line immediately after the last line of the selected text. Dropping over that location yields no '+' glyph on the mouse and predictably no copy operation. However, that "masked" drop location is required to repeat the text immediately after the first. This may sound nit-picky 'cause I know keyboard copy/paste works too, but this is something that is so automatic for me that having it possibly broke from here on is going to be extremely irritating. Plus I run a clipboard monitoring utility (ClipMate ) and I prefer to not clutter my clipboard history with useless noise if I can help it.

I can copy-drop the selected text after the 1st char on the next line, however that misaligns the new text requiring some cleanup, which defeats the whole purpose. Same issue with the other work-a-round with dropping the text 1 line further down.

Some further details to troubleshoot with:
I'm creating quick "whole line" selections using the mouse in the area off the left text margin. I'm guessing those sort of selections include the last line-break char of the selection. So it looks like a drop-location immediately after that last line-break char of a selection is not being allowed .

If I create a similar selection of lines by swiping down to the end char of the last line in the selection, it appears that last line-break then is NOT in the selection and then I can ctrl-drag-drop copy it to the beginning of the next line. But since the last line break wasn't included in the copy, I have to insert the extra break, which more then doubles the amount of keyboard/mouse interaction for something which used to be 2nd nature and done in a fraction of second.

I've been primarily editing XML & text files. I do usually have outlining turned on in XML and C# but I did recreate the above without outlining on also.
I notice the mouse hovering in the "outlining glyph zone" know does some nifty hightlighing which is nice (sort-a wish I could use that highlighting like a copy-drag sort a selection too. Oh well). Anyway, outlining doesn't seem to affect this issue.

Feature Request - Ignore specific warnings, not warning types

It would be nice if we could ignore specific warning messages (related to a given position in our code) rather than warning types from the linker options.

Specific warnings in some places it may be ignored, while in others not. So it isn't an option to ignore the warning type by whole, and seeing a given warning in a place where it cannot be helped after each build can be troublesome. So can be this implemented into the IDE? (For example a right click ignore this warning message/type menu on the error list would be awesome).

It shouldn't be that hard to get the warning typeand add it automatically to that list so the developer doesn't have the long way of Solution properties, etc...

IntelliSense doesn't pre-select while typing

In earlier versions of Visual Studio, IntelliSense always scrolled to the first matching item in the list of suggestions and pre-selected that Item so it was just one keypress (whitespace or any punctuation character) away from being written.

In VS 2010 ß 2 it seems that IntelliSense is more picky...

If I press "Conv." on the keyboard then I expect to see "Convert." in my code. But, however, in VS 2010 - although I can see "Convert" as the first item in the suggestion list - this first item is not selected... So pressing the "." key doesn't yield the expected result, which would be "Convert.". Instead, I see only "Conv.", underlined by a red line...

Is this issue something I should feedback to Connect website?

How can I Enable the Document Map Margin (rockscroll-like feature) in VS2010 Beta2?

In VS 2008 I'm a big fan of a free 3rd-party addin called RockScroll written by Microsoftie Rocky Downs. How do I turn this feature on? I've looked in Tools -> Options -> Text Editor, then all of Tools -> Options and View -> Other Windows without success. I previously asked this question in the Visual Studio Team System 2010 Beta2 forum, but it was "helpfully" moved to the defunct .NET Framework 4.0 CTP forum. I'd really like to know the answer to this one.....

Tooltips in squiggle tag

What should I feed to the squiggleTag constructor as a tooltip. The type of the appropriate parameter is object. Itried to stick a string there - nothing happened. The squiggle line is there but no tooltip.
Also the only type of squiggle I am getting is a red one. What a valid strings for the squggle type? I tried "error", "warning", "ga" - for "garbage" all look the same

Writing Windows Media Center software in Visual Studio 2010

Hi there,

I'm really interested in writing some Windows Media Center software in Visual Studio 2010. I have had a quick go but can't seem to get anywhere. I have downloaded and installed the Microsoft Windows Media Center SDK 6.0 and I had expected that this would mean that I would be able to create projects that open up this api to me. However nothing has changed. Does this need a later version of the SDK to work or am I simply barking up the wrong tree?

Any advice would be appreciated

Custom HTML Editor

I'd like to create a custom page (with my own extension) for editing HTML. The built in HTML editor is fine for a starting point. Is there a way I can create my custom editor starting with the HTML editor as a base. I need to be able to do things like display extra tags in intellisense, display new or different attributes for certain tags. Any help getting started with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Unable to run VS2010 or VS2008

I have VS 2008 installed to a win 7 pc and have now installed VS2010 Beta 2. The installation went without a hitch no errors reported. However when I try to run and load a project in VS2010 i get the following error before crashing:-
The 'VSDebugPresentationPackage, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11D50a3a' package did not load correctly.
Problem may be caused by a configuration change or installation of another extension.
Run the application with /Log on the cmd line and examine the file ....AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml.

Any ideas on where and what I should run???

Secondly I can no longer load a project in VS2008. I get the following error:-
Unable to read the project file <filename>
MSBuildToolsPath is not specified for the 'Tools Version 4.0' defined at
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MSBUILD\TOOLSVERSION\4.0,
or the valuespecified evaluates to the empty string.

Any ideas please.

VS2010 Beta 2 - changing RESX assembly references incorrectly

Running VS2010 Beta 2, working with a project that targets the .NET 2.0 Framework. We have a build environment set up separately, which does not yet have the 4.0 Beta2 framework - as we're intending to use the multi-targeting features in VS2010 to allow us to develop our existing 2.0/3.5 apps (and migrate to 4.0 later). Unfortunately, it seems VS2010 incorrectly updates the resource files with references to the 4.0 framework even for apps set to target the 2.0 framework. Here's the error from our build environment:

error MSB3103: Invalid Resx file. Could not load file or assembly 'System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) Line 122, position 5.

Viewing a diff on the resx file that was recently updated, I see a couple new entries referencing 4.0, and all of the pre-existing entries were updated to change the 'Version=' from 2.0.0.0 to 4.0.0.0 (although the PublicKeyToken and all other data remained the same):

Problems with start page

I have two questions about Start Page functionality.

1. In the listbox under Getting Started the content will not to respond to the mousewheel by scrolling. I tried to fix this by customizing the Start Page myself, but I am a novice with WPF. By looking at the project I saw that you were using a scrollviewer control to scroll the listbox, how do I get it to respond to the scrollwheel.

2. The items in the listbox under Getting Started have links to various content. I would prefer to open these links in an external viewer, is there currently a way to do this, if not how would I add a context menu to do so.

When I edit .xaml files in the code editor (I don't use the designer), Visual Studio displays a dialog with the erro

This error does not always occur immediatly, the editor sometimes works fine for several minutes. However, once I got this error, it pops up on nearly every character I type in the editor and I have to restart VS to get rid of the error. After I get the error, IntelliSense does not work anymore in .xaml files.

devenv.exe also often uses 50% cpu as long as I have any .xaml file opened in the xaml code editor. I can still work with VS when that happens and the cpu usage goes back to normal when I close the .xaml file.

Can't change font size for "Editor Tooltip" (i.e. intellisense) or for "Statement Completion"

I always immediately increase the size of most fonts in my IDE, as I have it in VS 2008, but in VS2010 beta2, although I can successfully increase the size of font for "Text Editor" (under Environment>Fonts and Colors), no matter what changes I make, the font sizes for "Editor Tooltip" (i.e. intellisense) and for "Statement Completion" do not change whatever from their default very small size (like size 8). I change them to 12, to 14, to 16!, no changes WHATSOEVER become apparent. After changing, I restart VS, no changes are apparent. Also, I experimented with changing the font type as well (kept it with Consolas, then with others like Tahoma, that didn't change anyting).

Type and Member Dropdown Bars with MEF

I'm pretty sure after scouring the documentation that there isn't an MEF component for the type and member dropdown bars. However, I think I can get it working by using an IWpfTextViewCreationListener. Inside TextViewCreated(), I need to get the IVsDropdownBarManager associated with the IWpfTextView. How can I do this?

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 Crashing constantly

Hi, me and my collegues at work are having problems with VS2010 B2, almost everytime we debug our app and close it VS stops responding completely we have to take it down and restart.

Our environment is as follows:

Windows Vista Business 64bits (3 machines) and Ultimate 64bits( 1 machine)
We are using source 2005 safe for Source Control

We are developing a .net FW4 app with webservices and access to a Oracle Database all using Framework 4 converted from 3.5sp1

We also have some of the extensions (ZoomEditorMargin, Source Outliner, Power Commands and Go To Definition)

The machines are all Intel Quad Cores with Ram Between 5 and 6GB and a onboard graphics card

Is there any issues we should be aware of? How can we solve this issue?

Visual Studio 2010 Beta Windows 7 Application Error

Installed VS 2010 Beta, version 10.0.20506.1, on Vista Ultimate two weeks ago.  I took all the default values for the install. It was a smooth install; nothing to report other than thumbs up. This past weekend I upgraded/installed Windows 7 on the Vista machine. I tried to run VS 2010 but not able to; the splash screen does not even appear. Region line highlighting

A couple questions:

Is there a setting in Font and Colors that controls the background color when the user brushes over the region line in the left margin? Right now, I am getting a white-ish blue that I can't seem to change. It really contrasts with my normal dark blue background and is really jarring whenever my mouse passes over that line. I attached a picture below describing what I am talking about.
Is there any way to turn off the region line and region buttons? It's just noise to me, especially in XML and XAML files where I never collapse regions. This seems like a prime feature to have on a per text editor basis but I'm not finding any options for it.

How to make VS 2010 Beta2 Faster in VMWare

If you’re running Visual Studio 2010 in a VMWare virtual machine, you may see some UI display issues and poor performance, especially in the text editor. This is a known issue with VMWare’s accelerated display device support, and the good news is that the problem is simple to fix. You can disable hardware acceleration by creating the registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DisableHWAcceleration as a DWORD and setting it to 1.

Note that this will disable hardware acceleration for all WPF applications, including VS 2010, but VMWare's hardware acceleration emulation will still be available to other applications. If you’re interested in more details, I’d encourage you to take a look at MSDN’s page about this and other graphics rendering registry settings.

How to turn off auto indentation on javascript comments - VS2010 B2

When editing javascript files in Visual Studio, my comments jump to the right, to be flush with the indented code. I do not want that. I want to keep some comments flush left and not have to fight with the editor (fix the indentation manually). (It worked the way I like in VS2005/8, perhaps due to a setting I've long since forgotten). I've been trying to locate the option in Tools; Options to disable this. Can anyone help?

I usually go to:
Tools; Options
TextEditor node
JScript node and explore all of its options

I cannot find any option that says "comment".

screen readers - code editor - UIA

My name is Justin and I am a blind computer programmer.

I use a screen reader called jaws found at www.freedomscientific.com to use the computer and program with.

The screen reader is a client application that can use the UIA model within the vs 2010 IDE to derive information and verbally speak it to blind programmers. For example, while in the code editor, find the current line of text the cursor is on and read it to the blind user or... detect the currently selected text and read the highlighted text to the user so they know what is currently selected.

Since vs 2010 is using UIA now, and not MSAA, I was wondering if you can help me find some documentation on how to program using the UIA model in the vs 2010 code editor?

I need to program the screen reader to work in vs 2010 since the programming support within the screen reader for vs 2008 is not going to work... it was built upon msaa.

Do you know of any UIA code editor documentation that will show me the objects/properties/events of the vs 2010 beta 2 code editor?

Request for performance feedback after disabling hardware acceleration.

Recently we posted a workaround in the VS Editor forum for VMWare users that’d we like more feedback on (“How to make VS 2010 Beta2 Faster in VMWare”). We’re interested in learning whether you found the DisableHWAcceleration workaround helpful, and/or whether you tried this work around on other platforms, e.g. running outside of a VM on Win7. If you did notice a performance differences after using the workaround, we’d love to hear from you. Could I ask you to contact me directly with details or alternatively, please consider filing a bug through Microsoft Connect and specifying ‘Software Rendering feedback’.

Machine configuration

1. Are you running in a Virtual Machine environment (e.g. Virtual PC, Hyper-V, VMWare, etc)?

o If so, what is s the VM and Host configuration?

o What is the version of VM software?

2. Are you running over Remote Desktop?

Font problem

I have just installed VS 2010 Beta 2 and I have noticed that some fonts look terrible. In particular the VS menu and the text editor. For the text editor I have tried Consolas and Lucida Console at different sizes and they all look bad.

With WPF, and Xaml may have to change everything in interface except tab header !

Box Selection in Visual Studio 2010

Hey, not a question here...I just wanted to say kudos on the box selection bits.

I saw the intro video earlier in the year, but it didn't show off all the cool things that are going on there.

I really like the way you can "walk the box", if you will, by using shift+cursor keys to change the shape of the editing area. This is super handy.

I'd be interested to know if there's a way to tie into the box selection from a plug-in standpoint. While I think you guys have made this a better feature, I'd like to be able to extend it as there are possibilites to better the extraction and insertion stories. When you create a project, do you bother to check the Assembly Information? If you don't when you publish your application it will be "Copyright (c) Microsoft 2009". This has been reported any number of times. I don't want to hear any silliness about registry settings and how one is supposed to dink with the registry to get this to work. The default should be NOTHING (NULL), NADA.

Need an Architectural Overview

I'm in the middle of migrating an old MPF Language Service originally written for VS 2008 to VS 2010, and I have a general question regarding the new WPF editor architecture. Basically, I'm wondering if I should include colorizing and Intellisense in the language service anymore? Should I just use MEF extensions? ClassificationTypeDefinitions and ITaggerProviders seem to handle everything Where do I draw the line?

What is the new architecture (or road map) for developing a language service with colorizing, outlining, and intellisense? Should I scrap my language service? Do I even need to have a langauge service, now?

I've been going over the VS SDK in the MSDN library, and I just can't quite make out the overall design. Can anyone help explain the new vision?

VS2010B2 Building failed: unable to copy file from 'obj\debug\.dll' to 'bin\debug\.dll'

I noticed that in vs2010b2 , building project often failed with following error:

Error 1 Unable to copy file "obj\Release\FSLib.Windows.dll" to "bin\Release\FSLib.Windows.dll". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Release\FSLib.Windows.dll' because it is being used by another process.

This error didn't always occured.
It's too hard to see this error in vs2008. In fact,this dll was locked by vs2010b2 itself.
Unload & Reload project takes no effects. At this time,only close IDE & restart IDE could continue.

Project Type: Window Library
OS: Windows7 (both 32bit & 64bit)

BTW, In this solution,this project was referenced by another GUI project, and property 'Copy Local' has been set to true.

Why is Visual Studio the only IDE without Close All?

Close All But This is close, but it is not Close All.

It is in Notepad++
It is in Eclipse
But it is not in Visual Studio.

Even more frustrating in VS 2010, under File menu, there is Close, but not Close All But This. Why?

Please Please Please VS team, put in Close All and improve Close file(s) support under File menu!

can not use mouse when edit a aspx or js file

When I edit a aspx or js file, the editor sometimes can not be clicked, the cursor still works, but the mouse click does not work. But never happened in a cs file.

Can someone help?

I need to provide a way to edit the JavaScript source in Visual Studio. The challenge here is that the source is in a CouchDB database. I know how to get the source from there and how to save it back.

My question is how can I hook to the Editor, so that when an attempt is made to read the source the request is passed to me object, and the same for save? I was thinking about IVsUIShellOpenDocument.OpenStandardEditor, but a hit a roadblock there.

The new VSEditor architecture promises additional options - I tried ITextDocumentFactoryService, it looks like it does exactly what I need, but as soon as I exported and object implementing it, I got an error from MEF complaining about missing dependency to ITextBufferFactoryService. Apparently just exporting the DocumentFactory is not enough. What else is necessary to make it work?

gradient of text selection is no good

In VS2010 the selection in the text editor has a gradient and a border. I find this nice but distracting for work. I would like to ba able to turn off this gradient and maybe also the border.

I would like to add a screenshot here but do not know how to do that.

when i create a new project,i need to set the form's properties to fixsingle,no maximize button,no icons,etc

and the button, i need to change the flat style to system to get fade effect on vista/7

is there anyway to change the default properties for each components?

or VS don't have this function? if it doesnt have,i hope it will add into VS next time
