Answered VS2010 not opening CSS files; drag & add not working

This is pretty much a brand new installation of Visual Studio 2010 + SP1 (literally like 2 days fresh on brand new machine). I was working on a project and all was well. Shut my laptop down and went home, opened everything back up and now VS will not open up my CSS files. It says "The operation could not be completed. Unspecified error". Also, I used to be able to drag files from a folder to the project tree view in VS to add them to the project - this no longer works. No error/message is displayed, just gives me the red No! mouse icon.

The only extensions that I have (or or according to manager) is Ankh (SVN source control - never had problems with it before) and Enterprise Library 5. No add-ins are shown as being installed.

Anyone know what's going on or a way to fix it?

UPDATE it would appear that the paste functionality now takes ages to complete. Everything seems to run normally except for these really weird issues. Anyone have suggestions? Clearing settings did not work.

Try Resetting VS Settings at  "Tools/Import & Export Settings".

Sadly, this did not work. :(

Still gives me the same error message when trying to open CSS files and will not allow me to drag and drop new files (non-code files like images and what not) into the project from a folder.

I will add a big Me too to this. I have run the html 5 intellisense update and the MVC 3 update and now I cannot get CSS files in an MVC Website to open up.

    Thanks

I too got this error after installing MVC3.  I've uninstalled MVC3 and re-ran Service Pack 1 and still have the problem.

It only affects css files in the IDE from what I've experienced.

I found a solution. I repaired it within the extensions manager and now it's working fine. Hope it helps you.

That worked great.  I suspect something thru installing SharePoint Designer 2010 caused it.  Because I was editing css files fine on this box.  Then I needed to do a SharePoint task.  I decided to install SPD and got the task done.  Then all my css work using VS 2010 crapped out with the dreaded "The operation could not be completed. Unspecified error".

Vieyv01, Thanks for posting the fix.

    Downloaded version: CSS3 IS 2.1.1 {EADD8C3F-8A10-437E-A427-3E6AA18C47C5}

I tried the above fix (Web Standards Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 sp1) and it doesn't work. It says a newer version is already installed

Downloaded from: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/7211bcac-091b-4a32-be2d-e797be0db210 which is the same as using the Extension Manager... however, I do have the Sharepoint Designer installed but all was ok before that Windows Update DLL for VS 2010 SP1 was installed a few weeks back

    Any ideas?

This problem occurs when the disk location of the xml schema of CSS3 is wrong, it depends on where did you installed the VS10, for me as an example I resolved this issue by:

1-  After installing the schema from this site I was not able to use CSS3 as the CSS editor was not allowing me to select CSS3.

2- Be sure that you have installed VS10 SP1 for HTML5 is the version supposed to understand the CSS3 scripting, and the Web Standards Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 sp1 from here.

3- In the VS IDE go to menu Tools-->Options-->Text Editors-->HTML-->Validation, and select HTML5 from the Target: combo.

4- Make a search on your physical disk partitions for the file "css30.xml", this file is the installed XML schema of CSS3 and most probably it is located by the schema installer in the wrong location, make a copy of that file.

5- According to where did you installed VS10, go to the folder (Your physical disk partion:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\Packages\1033\schemas\CSS).

6- Finally past your css30.xml copy in the disk location in (5), now you can use the new CSS3.....good luck

This is the only thing that worked for me as well.
