Virtual Earth Silverlight Map Control - Status?
Hello,
Could someone in the know shed some light on the progress with the Virtual Earth Silverlight Map Control please.
We've been developing with the CTP version for 5 months now and there has been no word since its initial presentation as to what's happening with it.
We found the CTP to be very robust, fairly fast and a fantastic improvement over the ASP version and that was just with Silverlight 2.
Has it been abandoned or postponed?I’m sure there are many other companies out there who would like some basic feedback on this.
Kind regards,
Paul

- Hi Paul,
I don't believe anything official has been announced. As you said it is still in CTP and will probably continue to be there as products that are in CTP are usually in that state for 6-8 months (based on what I've seen from other products). With that said I would be very surprised if it doesn't make it out of CTP.
It hasn't been abandoned or postponed from what I heard. If it had the CTP version would of stopped working as the credentials are built into that version. The credentials would of been disabled.

- I believe that it would be reasonable to say that the whole "Bing" rebranding, release of Silverlight 3, combined with other reorganisation at MS (integration of photosynth into VE etc.) probably has created a bit of a setback, however I don't think it's entirely surprising that the control is still in CTP.
As Richard said, 5 months is hardly a long time - some products remain in CTP for much longer than that while all the bugs are ironed out and new features are added. The best thing you can do to decrease the time it will take to release is to report any bugs and feature requests via MS Connect. You can of course contact your local MS contact who might be able to provide more concrete information.
Beginning Spatial with SQL Server http://www.apress.com/book/view/1430218290 - Hi Paul,
The word from MS in June was that there would be no more releases until the final version, which is due towards the end of the year.
Silverlight is the way forward for Bing Maps as far as MS are concerned. So it certainly has not been abandoned.
Cheers Thanks for your quick responses, was getting worried there for a moment but understand the timescales better now.
Bing Maps Silverlight Map Control CTP on MS Connect has been rather quiet with any MS user replies to issues/bugs etc. Like I said though, it's been a very robust build with few problems, we would be happy to use it commercially as it is :O).Hopefully we'll hear something official in the coming months.
- I think this is as close as we are going to get on the Status of the Silverlight control (Posted on Chris Pendleton's blog): "Finally, if you want a supported .NET interface from Microsoft, you can use the Bing Maps Silverlight Control which is currently in CTP. This WILL come out of CTP and become a supported version, so do not fear it will share the ASP .NET Control’s fate." Windows Live Developer MVP - http://rbrundritt.spaces.live.com - How is the status on the control currently? Will it be in a final at the "end of the year"? We want to use it in our software which should be delivered in February. Will this be possible?
Further on: will the control cost anything or just the usage of the bing map services? Floyd Mendoza has replied yesterday on the Silverlight map control CTP home to the same question saying...
Hi everyone,I realize our team has been remiss in responding to this question. We're still working out a couple of items, but should have
more information for you very soon.Best,Floyd
So hopefully not too long to wait now, also there are quite a few Microsoft events going on mid-November and we all know how they like to hold onto things for a big event ;O).
Cheers,
Paul- In regards to the cost, I would be surprised if there was a cost to use the control as none of the other controls had a cost. There will more than likely be a cost for transactions as normal.
