    Hi

I am trying to send email from smtp client by using system.net.mail, if i send and receive in my companies smtp server it works properly, however if i send mail to hotmail, rediff, gmail etc (all ids are valid known email id ), it gives error like

Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: not local host gmail.com, not a gateway

    please provide me a solution.

    thanks

    Atanu

What SMTP server are you using when you send mail to?
most companies like Hotmail, rediff and gmail require email servers to be setup correctly. Often times this includes having a reverse name for the IP, SPF records, etc, amongst many other things. If your company's email server is not setup properly then this may.
If your mail server is public facing then you can try using this test to see if there are  problems. Chances are however that if you are not the network administration for the company any necessary changes won't be able to be made.

    Hope this helps.

It sounds to me like a relaying issue.  Is the SMTP server configured to relay to outside addresses?

I would presume that your company uses an email server like MS Exchange server. In order for your program to use smtp to an outside email address, your admin would need to allow for email relaying.

Another possible cause for this error is if the outgoing SMTP email server you are using "Requires secure authentication" and the wrong username and/or password is supplied.

I had the same problem and this was the answer for me. I had to supply my full domain name (username@domain.com) instead of just my username to get it to work.

I tried using the full domain name but the problem still persists.

Can you provide the changes that are required on the exchange server? Also would making these changes affect the other emails that are flowing right now?...Please reply asap.

    thank you in anticipation.
