Can not deploy metro app anymore
-
Wednesday, June 20, 2012 1:03 PM
It use to work but now even with a newly created metro app from template I got those 2 errors when I hit deploy:
Error 1 Error : DEP0700 : Registration of the app in the layout folder "C:\Users\Public\Documents\GridAppPub\GridAppPub\bin\Debug\AppX" failed. GridAppPub
Error 2 error 0x80041316: windows.licensing failed to update critical data for 84caf524-2d21-4c83-aaea-378e9650fd83_1.0.0.0_neutral__31ae3h49aptqa. Try again and contact the package publisher if the problem persists. GridAppPubI tried with a new user but same result.
I googled for "windows.licensing failed to update critical data" but got no results, witch make me think it may not be a common problem.
Any help welcome.
Thanks
Frederic

Hi Frederic,
was there anything in the event viewer under custom views\Administrative Events with the source Store-Licensing?
Is this on Windows Release Preview or Consumer Preview? You mentioned that this occurs for all metro applications. What is the state of your developer license right now (run the powershell cmdlet get-windowsdeveloperlicense)?
Also could you email me at mikewong at microsoft.com and I'll send some other details on getting additional logs.
much appreciated,
mike

I am seeing a similiar issue. I can generally publish locally, but if I have a C++ WinRT project in my solution that I take a dependency on I get this failure. I get the same even when trying to build the Microsoft supplied samples for doing mixed c#/C++ metro development.
From another thread, I found how to get some more detailed logs, which I've supplied below. I am also on RC.

Hi Fred and Marmes,
could you send me the following two event logs
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Microsoft-Windows-AppXDeploymentServer%4Operational.evtx
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Microsoft-WS-Licensing%4Admin.evtx
Also, if you go to computer management -> right click on the computer node in explorer, select manage, in the computer management windows, expand system tools | Task scheduler | Task scheduler library | microsoft | Windows | WS, does the task License validation exist? Is it in a ready status? Do you remember doing anything with the task scheduler before this issue started to occur?
much appreciated,
mike

Hi Mike,
I have the same problem too.
I’ve emailed you the same information from my machine that you asked the others to send you just in case it helps solve the riddle.
* Clean install of VS2012 RC for Windows 8. No code added or changed to that produced by the template for a C# Blank Metro App.
* Nothing done with Task Scheduler.
Thanks for your help,
Glyn.

Version 11.0.50522.1 RCREL
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 4.5.50501C# Windows Metro Style Blank App.
No changes made. Try to build or deploy and get the following errors:
Error 1 Error : DEP0700 : Registration of the app in the layout folder "W:\Users\Glyn\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\Hello WIn8\Hello WIn8\bin\Debug\AppX" failed. Hello WIn8

When opening Task Scheduler to get to WS entries get this error message dialog:
Task License Validation: The task XML contains an unexpected node.

Mike,
I am following up with you at your e-mail provided. For others on this thread, note that I have recieved the same message as Deep-Thought when attempting to view the License Validation Task:
When opening Task Scheduler to get to WS entries get this error message dialog:
Task License Validation: The task XML contains an unexpected node.
And no, I did not do anything with tasks in this install. However, I am running VS Ultimate 2012 and VS Win8 Exp side by side.

Hello Frederic, Marmes,
so with the help of another customer (Huge thanks Glyn!), it appears the License Validation task has some invalid xml. We are trying to understand what is happening to the task, so if anyone runs into
Error 2 error 0x80041316: windows.licensing failed to update critical data for 84caf524-2d21-4c83-aaea-378e9650fd83_1.0.0.0_neutral__31ae3h49aptqa. Try again and contact the package publisher if the problem persists. GridAppPub
The other telltale sign of this issue is if you go to computer management -> right click on the computer node in explorer, select manage, in the computer management windows, expand system tools | Task scheduler | Task scheduler library | microsoft | Windows | WS.
When opening Task Scheduler to get to WS entries get this error message dialog:
Task License Validation: The task XML contains an unexpected node.there is a License Validation file in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WS. Could you send it to me?
To get the machine back into a "deployable" state, we'll need to remove the task and re-import it.
To remove the task, in a command prompt type in
Schtasks /delete /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\WS\License Validation"
You can get a good version of the License Validation file either from me or another Windows 8 machine if one is available.
Go back to computer management, right click on the WS node and select Import Task...Select a good version.
We should now see it listed
License Validation in a ready state.
much appreciated,
mike

Same here--I cannot delete the license validation using the command prompt. It's been almost a month--what's the status on this? I just encountered this a few days ago and have been searching for a solution and ended up here. This has brought development to a full stop. Thanks.Hello Mike,

Mike,
I have a similar problems ("DEP0700 : Registration of the app.." & "...windows.licensing failed ...") however I have no evidence of my XML being badly formed, on which case I shouldn't think that I need to remove the task.
In my case even a blank app, any sample app, and my own apps, fail.
Any other ideas? This is a £400 a day delay for me and I hadn't budgeted in chasing my tail on this :D
Kind regards,
Anthony
(I wish I'd kept track of this post, somehow I solved it but don't remember, these many weeks later!)

Hi @ all,
I've found out, that the problem might come from an invalid our outdated certificate.
I've changed the original from MS (in test app SocketStream Sample) to a test cert I've created myself and ist been working again...
I had this issue after I bought W8 and reinstalled my whole WS. The copies of my Projects didn't worked anymore....
Cheers,
Jo

The solution proposed by @Jomagic doesn't work for me.
I keep getting this error
Error 1 Error : DEP0700 : Registration of the app failed. error 0x80070005: windows.licensing failed to update critical data for xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Try again and contact the package publisher if the problem persists. (0x80073cf6) App1
I've already tried generating a new test certificate and renewing the dev license.
It's blank Win 8 Pro x64 with Visual Studio Express for Win 8 Applications.
I don't have another computer with Win 8 so I can try the proposed solution to remove/reimport that task.
Best regards
