Is Visual Studio 2011 Express the only version of Visual Studio that runs on Windows 8?
-
Thursday, May 03, 2012 12:14 PMI have installed both Visual Studio 2011 Premium Beta and the Visual Studio 2011 Express for Windows 8 on my Windows 8 VM, but only the latter runs. When I attempt to run the premium version I receive a dll entry point error. Have I done something wrong or is the VS 2011 Express Beta for Windows 8 the only version of the VS 2011 beta that will run on Windows 8?

Hi John,
we should be able to be run Premium Beta on Windows 8 Consumer Preview. In the error message, does it mention the dll name?
could you run devenv with the /log switch. After you get the error, could you send me %APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0\ActivityLog.xml ( Windows Key + R, specify the path %APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0)
Also, could you zip up and send me the file %temp%\log dd_vs_premium_<date><someNumber> e.g. dd_vs_premium_20120210153801? Send to mikewong at microsoft.com.
much appreciated,
mike

The specific error is "The procedure entry point __ctrlsWin8orLater could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe. I ran it with the log parameter, but it didn't write a log.
