Can I restrict a Work Item Type to a specific Area Path Value?
For Example, I have a Work Item Type “DB-Bugs”, There are many Area Path Values,
- Code
-
Database
- SP
- Function
-
Schema
- i. Table
- ii. Constraints
- Triggers
-
Index
- i. Clustered
- ii. Non Clustered
- Config
OF all , I want my Work Item Type “DB-Bug” to only show all items under 2.Database. I use TFS 2010.

Hi r.muralidhar,
Thank you for your post.
I suppose you have a area structure, and want a specific area node as default value for a specific work item type. If I have misunderstood anything, please free feel to let me know.
Unfortunately, it is support to have a default area value when you define the work item type. Area and Iteration field are TFS core fields, TFS only allow limited rules on core field to ensure basic workflow. Set default value for area and iteration field is not support.
I hope this information will help resolve this issue.
If anything is unclear, please free feel to let me know.

Lily,
It is not just setting default, to clarify further, I don't want someone to create a DB-Bug and set area path to Code or Config.
If someone wants to create a DB-Bug, they must be able to choose only (area path) values under Database.

Hi r.muralidhar,
Thank you for your response.
Set default value or set Area value depond the create work item's type are all rules apply for area field, as far as i know, they both not support, area field are system field, rules can be applied for this field is very limited. I suggest you submit a feedback to Visual Studio UserVoice site (http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio). Microsoft engineers will evaluate them seriously.
