"Cannot complete the operation" of SAVING a work item...log says "SQL expression services limit has been reached"

Question

Can't save any kind of work item and always get the error "Can not complete the operation. An unexpected error occured". I've tried:

1.Refreshing the work item list in team explorer.

2.Disconnecting and reconnecting to the project.

3.Closing and restarting VS2005

4.Recycling the IIS application pool

Two errors show up in the server application log. They are listed below. What do they mean and how do i fix the inability to save work items? I read something about large work items and "simplifying the sql search". But i'm saving, not searching. I will try restarting the server or at least the sql services.

Sorry that you hit this problem.  This can happen under rare conditions.  Basically when you save your work item, we validate all the rules associated with the fields for that work item type.  Under rare conditions the rule validation expression can become too complex for SQL to evaluate.

Have you made any modifications to your work item type definitions for your project/server?  Have you added lots of fields and rules?  Can you post your work item type here?

Also - how many work item types have you uploaded to the server?

1. Yes, many modifications have been made. We use none of the original Agile or CMMI witd's.

2.Yes, many fields and rules have been added.

3.Um, just one of them is 3500+ lines long. The bulk of rules help enforce state related field requirements. I will email you a copy if you want to see it.

4.There are only 4 types, but a couple of them have had many revisions. Does each revision count?

Trying to save a very long and complex work item but also a very simple and short work item type both times the message appears "Could not complete the operation, an unexpected error occured", while the backend applog says a sql error occured. Where is there some guidance explaining and helping troubleshoot work item saves? Where in the tfs sql database server might there be some relevant info?

Sorry for the delayed response, and that you hit this issue.

 

The expression limit is scoped to a project - so you could still see this on a simple work item type.

Can you post your complex work item type please?
