Answered TFS 2010- Test Manager - How to import test steps from excel?

Hi, I have the following scenario: In the company we've plenty Test Plans we did in excel since long time ago; so that we want to take adavantage of them by importing them into Test Manager.
I noticed that if I export an existent (previously created in Test Manager) Test Case to excel, then the test steps are compressed into a single line. For instance if I have the following 3 steps in Test Manager:
              -  Launch application.exe
              -  Go to the File menu and select Save
              -  Type "MyFile.txt" and click Ok

Then if I want to get it in excel, the above 3 steps are compressed in a single cell.

So I wonder how to do it backwards (from excel to Test Manager) taking in consideration that each Test Case contains many steps, and if I put all steps togheter then they will be exported as a single step.

I really appreciate the help you can provide
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Rafael,

    Thanks for your post.

For your issue to import test steps from Excel to Microsoft Test Manager, please have a look at the Add action and validation test steps from Microsoft Excel or Word part of the following article.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd421945.aspx

I hope this helps you solve your problem. Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

    Thanks,

That is very cool!! ...I just tried in other computer and I was able to download it :) ...I have played around with it, and it's very cool!! ...many thanks!!

While I was using it, I found that some Test Cases (excel) were written making reference to other columns (so they are kind of inputs for the step of the Test Case), so if I include those columns when I atempt to migrate the excel file, they are in different source field but none of the possible Destination Fields are matchable.

Do you have any suggestion on this matter?
Seems to me that Destination Fields, are the System Fields ....do you know how to create a system Field and if so, then how to make them visible into Test Manager?

    Many thanks for you input!!

    Hi Vicky,

Thanks for your input but what I need is a process for automated rather than copying and pasting text (I read this articule before but it wasn't exactly what I need). Actually the program that Ewald is pointing out seems to me it is the one!! :)

Many many thanks for your input!! (Y)

    Hi Ewald,

I am able to import the test case or bug from excel / spreadsheet to TFS server but not into the Test Manager. Then I need to add the imported test case in TFS to Test plan in Test Manager  and then edit that based on requirement.  I need to directly import the test case excel file to Test Manager not into TFS.

Then Is there any tool that will help to delete or remove the unwanted test cases and bugs from TFS. I gone through the following link

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd236908(VS.100).aspx

Is this is only way that we can delete the test case (work items)?

    Thanks in advance

Regrettably yes that is the only way to remove unwanted test cases, bugs, and shared steps from TFS.

    :-(

    Hi Ewald,

I followed your link and the tools works pretty good. But I would like to know how do we migrate the test cases with parameters in steps and the value for parameters?

    Thanks

It displays a blank list of  work items on destination screen of test migrator plus.
