I think it should work, but SourceSafe is a depricated product from Microsoft. They have just announced a new version tfs (TFS Basic), which is the successor for SourceSafe (http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2009/10/01/tfs-2010-for-sourcesafe-users.aspx). There is a migration path from SourceSafe to TFS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181247(VS.80).aspx).
When you want to work with Source Control and database objects, you can use Visual Studio for Database Professionals (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa833253.aspx).
