Visual Studio 2010 (and/or SSMS) and Visual Source Safe
- Would Visual Studio 2010 work with Visual Source Safe 2005?
Would new SSMS work with Source Safe 2005? I heard SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is just an instance of Visual Studio shell in isolated mode, so it could probably be affected somehow.
if not, is there a plan for a new version of Source Safe?
if not, would the only Microsoft source control option be Team Foundation Server, or you have something else in the plans? I think it should work, but SourceSafe is a depricated product from Microsoft. They have just announced a new version tfs (TFS Basic), which is the successor for SourceSafe (http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2009/10/01/tfs-2010-for-sourcesafe-users.aspx). There is a migration path from SourceSafe to TFS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181247(VS.80).aspx).
When you want to work with Source Control and database objects, you can use Visual Studio for Database Professionals (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa833253.aspx).

Blog: www.ewaldhofman.nl- According to the VSTS 2010 Beta2 README, there are compatibility issues with SourceSafe. I assume they will be fixed before RTM. According to the standard lifecycle policy, SourceSafe 2005 is fully supported for another year or so + extended support through 2015.
SSMS should stay compatible so long as the TFS team keeps the MSSCCI plugin up to date, which historically they've done a very good job with.
