AnswerRenew Trial License and Upgrade TFS v2008 to TFS v2010

    Hi,

We are in the process of evaluating TFS to replace our existing PVCS system. We have installed a trial version of TFS v2008 and migrated some source codes into the trial server (single server). On the client side, we use Visual Studio v2008. The trial license expired last week although we already renewed it once last month. We are approaching the final stage of our evaluation process and would like to complete it for the decision making process soon.

We are looking for a way to extend the trial license one more time. Indeed, we'd like to upgrade our trial server to TFS v2010 to try out a few new features (ex. branching history) only offered in v2010.

Any suggestion how to do this and keep the existing data intact in the trial server?

    Thanks,
    Luong

    Hi Luong,

    Thank you for your post.

For License issue, license experts can help you to answer your question.
Since the question is a license issue, you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detail information from there. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites to find contact information in their locations: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/

For your concern on migration from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 beta version, I found some related blogs that shed some light on it. Please check:

However, TFS 2010 is still not released. Thus, it is not expected to use one beta version for your important work, it would be better for those who are interested. Before the migration, please remember to backup necessary stuff.

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Hi,

To my knowledge the extension is a one time deal (four months is the trial maximum)
You can try to call Microsoft support directly.

The TFS2010 beta2 upgrade would work but you will probably need to unblock TFS 2008 first (I am assume the DB are currently in read-only mode).
Or you can install a fresh TFS 2010 and re-migrate some code into that version.

    Have a good day,
