VS Team Install on server 2003 R2
- I have literally pulled all of my hair out trying to install this beast!
I have endured install errors with Report Services, with SQL 2005 Server and SHarepoint. I have all of the prerequsites installed and tested and still I'm getting this ambiguous TF220059 error. The log is reading "getcurrenttfsproperties.exe: *** ERROR: Failed to find any SQLRS instances through WMI!".
Can anyone out there tell me why the install is throwing this error?
Thanks

- Hi Chuck,
Thank you for your reply.
I have just completed the verification of both the SQL 2005 installation and the SharePoint Installation and all checks out.
The only hang ups are with the Reports Server. I can no longer access the Report Server or Manager either outside the network or inside.
Based on your description, it seems that almost every component of SQL Server 2005 has been well installed except for Report Service. I would suggest you to reinstall it to have a try.
Let me know if it works.
Best regards,
Yichun Chen

- Hey Chuck,
The WSS 2.0 instance's managed paths config for the default website virtual server might be the cause of the issue if Report Services were installed/reinstalled after WSS was configured by the TFS installer . CAn you navigate to the SharePoint Central admin > Configure Virtual Server Settings > Default Web Site (or whatever your port 80 site is named) > Define managed paths . On that screen see if 'reportserver' and 'reports' are listed as Excluded Paths. If they are not then add them from tha Add new Path section.

- Hi Chuck,
Thank you for your reply.
Yichun,
The next install of Report Services will be my third.
Can you advise me of any special instructions on installing for TFS?
To install TFS, I would recommend you to follow the points of latest installation guide - Team Foundation Installation Guide for Visual Studio Team System 2008 step by step. It includes detail instructions like how to do the preparation, how to install prerequisites (e.g.: SQL Server, Sharepoint components) of TFS. This will help you to install TFS smoothly.
Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.
Have a good weekend. The same to Maxim, Jehan33 and Alin. :)
Best regards,
Yichun Chen

Don't understand the diference between application & data tier. The installation is a single box setup. Database and application are on the same box.
What is meant by installing RS on Application Tier?
Thanks
chuck - Hi,
In dual-tier configuration of TFS, Application tier will be configured on one box and database on other box.
As your Installation is a single box setup, both Application and Data tier will be configured on same box.
In dual-tier installation, Installing RS(SQL Server Reporting Services) on Application tier has resolved this issue for few guys.
Please make sure to provide the Version of TFS and Installation type information while posting the questions, because this will help us to provide more appropriate solution.
SQL Server Reporting services will be installed as part of SQL Server 2005. Please check that this has been installed and running on your box.
Please check below things also:
1. Firewall is Turnoff.
2. Remote connections are enabled on SQL (Check out the SQL 2005 Surface Area Config Tool-->TCP/IP)3. correct instance name used during install
Correct them if they are not proper.
Thank you for the tiering clarification. I have installed on a single tier and used the SQL 2005 installation setup to install the Report Server and patched the SQL Server to SP2.
1. The Firewall has been trurned off.
2. Remote connections are on
3. The correct instance has been identified and used.
All this without change.
chuck- I'm very confused.
I'm looking at this error message but I don't see this path out on the file system. Can someone explain to me where this path would be?
STATUS: Found no instances of WMI class MSReportServer_ConfigurationSetting under namespace \\csitadmsrv\csitsql\root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9\Admin
root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9\Admin
chuck - Is the Report Services instance initialized? If so - could it be that SharePoint integration was enabled? What do you get when you go to http://localhost/reports from the server? Did the above path come from the error message (and did you find the error message in the Even viewer)?
Regards,
Maxim - The report services instance is all green checks as per the Report Server Configuration Screen and has been initialized.
I get the Reports home page.
The error came from the TFS Install log file and I do not see it in the Event Viewer.
Do you know if that path needs to be out on the file system?
Thanks
Chuck
chuck It keeps getting odder and odder.
I just rechecked my access to the report server using both the network ip address and localhost and cannot access the report server interface. I did however recv the login propmt when I used the network ip address from my browser.
http:\\192.168.2.107\ReportServerI recv a 404 page not found error.
chuck- Odd behaviour indeed. Can you try hitting it using the server name (http://ServerName/Reports or http://ServerName/ReportServer )?
Are there host headers configured on the port 80 website? Does the server have multiple IPs?

Maxim - Hi Chuck,

Welcome to the All-In-One Code Framework! If you have any feedback, please tell us. - Maxim,
When I try using the computer name I get the same result 404.
When I try using the box only IP I get prompted for a login\password and then I get a 404
When I try using the 127.0.0.1 IP I get prompted for a login\password and then I get a 404
When I try using "Localhost" I get the SharePoint Template selection website.
The box only has a single ip assigned.
The only entry in my Hosts file is for the localhost pointing to 127.0.0.1
I have read the latest install guide backwards and forwards and verified the SQL server as per the guide.

chuck - Can you go to Report Services Configuration, login to the local instance and check the Report Server Virtual Directory and Report Manager Virtual Directory fields? Ensure those are bound to the web site you use for SharePoint (Default Web Site or SharePoint - 80).
You can also check that through IIS by expanding the site hosting the SharePoint instance.
Maxim
I see both of the report server virtual directories under the default web site. There is also a SharePoint Central Admin website there as well.
Is that what you mean by "bound"?
Chuck
chuck- Hi Chuck,
Have you tried my suggestion to verify Microsoft SQL Server 2005?
The possible cause of your issue could be related to corrupted installation or configuration. Thus, I would suggest you to verify it. If it fails to be verified, it would be better to reinstall SQL Server Report Service.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

I get prompted for a login\password on initial try and once I login it returns a 404 page not found. One thing interesting is that in the Reports Server Config -> Database Setup, I can connect to the Report Server database fine if (LOCAL)\<Instance Name> is specified in the Server Name field, but if I change that value to the true server name the Network Service fails to login.
Hope this will give someone an idea.
Chuck
chuck- Hey Chuck,
By 'bound' in my previous reply I meant that the web site listed in the Report Server config manager (in the Report Server Virtual Directory and Report Manager Virtual Directory) was indeed the correct one.
Just to confirm - is this a TFS 2005 instance (with WSS 2.0) or TFS 2008 with WSS 3.0?
Also, by the server's 'true server name' do you mean the machine name or a DNS record such as TFS.domain.com ?
Also, are you testing accessing the 'true server name' from the server itself when you get the failed login? If yes, and the 'true server name' is indeed a DNS A-record then you might be running into this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/896861

- One more thing before I give up on this secon Report Server installation.
I have noticed that I can access the reports and reports manager if I use the ip adress of the box instead of the dns name.
If I'm on the network my server is on I can use 192.168.2.107\ReportsMgr and get the Report Server Ngr Console without problem and if I use the external IP when I'm outside my network it will work as well, but if I use the server name (Inside) or the dns name (outside) it fails to connect.
Thanks
chuck - Hey Chuck,
Check the IIS host headers for the port 80 site - Go to IIS > Expand Web Sites > Right click on the port 80 site > Properties > in the first tab click on Advanced (to the Right of the IP Address). Check if there are any host headers defined in the 'Multiple identities of this site' section. If there is one that looks like:
<YourServerIPAddress> (or all ) 80 <blank> then that's fine as the site will respond to all requests since the host header value is blank. However, if you have something like:
<YourServerIPAddress> (or all) 80 <YourSiteIPAddress> then that means the site will only respond to http://<YourServerIPAddress> and not to http://<ServerName> or http://DNSName
In this case either add the other host headers in IIS or if you don't have any other sites running on port 80 leave the host header value blank.
Maxim - Maxim,
I followed the procedure you layed out and found only an entry for "Default" port "80" and no value for Host Header Value.
I'm unclear on the last line in your message. SHould I have an entry here and if so what should it be?
Thanks
chuck
