Differences between process templates in TFS 2010 Beta1 and Beta2?

Hello,

I am aware that there have been significant changes in Beta 2, and I want to know what all parts of Process Templates and Work Item Tracking have major changes in them. I am currently having an issue in saving an existing Change Request that I copied from the Agile 5.0 beta 2 template to customize.

It says the status of the CR's 'Assigned To' field is 'InvalidNotEmpty', when I make a transition from any state to the 'Closed' state (Active-->Closed, Proposed-->Closed & Resolved-->Closed). I can't find any rules related to this in the process template. The same happens with the Requirement WI also. But, Other fields and transitions work fine.

Can someone tell me what am I missing here?

Error while defining queries in the Process Template Editor?!

Hello everybody,

in the Process Template Editor Ive created an Area Path: "Deleted" and now in every query Im trying to
add the rule AND System.AreaPath NOT UNDER 'Deleted' when Im trying to save it I get the following error:

TF51011: The node specified is not found in the classification hierarchy. The error is caused by <<'Deleted'>>.

But the "Deleted" area path IS in the List of Area Paths from which I can choose to build the query?!

Whats the problem here?
Any ideas?

Hi EveryOne,

I want to Make My Description Tab in Work Item to a Html filed So that i can format the text in the description, i tried to Do it with the help of Following Liks http://www.ewaldhofman.nl/post/2009/08/03/Make-the-description-field-formattable.aspx , i follow the Steps and Modify the Work Item type 'Risk' and import it and by Witimport , and it give me a message , 'File Import Successfully' , but when i refresh the TFS and open the 'Risk' work item then its desription is still Plain Text( it is the same as before ) , can anybody help me why it not changed ??? i am using TFS 2008.

We have recently implemented TFS at our company. We used the templates that ship with TFS (Agile) and made some modifications to the work itemss to fit our needs. Now that we have been using TFS for a few months we want to start tweaking and changing the templates and work items to fit our needs even more. Is there a forum to discuss questions like: If you have a large enhancement to an existing Application/project and want to break this into smaller chunks (code, test, code review...), but still tie them all to a single work item how would you go about this.

How do I stop "Reason" being changed to "Fixed" when transitioning from "Resolved" to "Closed"

If a work item is transitioned to "Resolved" using a "Reason" other than "Fixed" (for example, "Obsolete") and the assignee agrees with the reason and attempts to Close the work item, the Reason is being modified to "Fixed". I attempted to change this default using the Work Item Process editor, but it says at least one default is required. So, the question is, is it possible to get TFS to keep the selected reason code when transitioning from Resolved to Closed and NOT change it to "Fixed". Users are missing this change and inadvertantly sometimes closing with the wrong reason code.

Hello everybody,

I have the following scenario:
Every time a user sets the state of an issue to closed he should be promted to create a related work item, so that the dialog comes up, that normally is displayed if I right-click the work item in the list and say "Add related work item".

Is such a scenario possible? Can it be accomplished with the workflow actions?
How would I go about it?

I want to restrict a certain group from changing the value of a certain field. I would like to use;
<READONLY not="[project]\groupX"/>

I want to apply this logic to the following field;
<FIELD name="Iteration Path" refname="System.IterationPath" type="TreePath" reportable="dimension">

When I attempt to validate the change I get;
Error: TF26062: Rule '<READONLY not="[project]\groupX"/>' is not supported for the field 'System.IterationPath'.

WHY?
Is there a different way for me to restrict certain groups from changing the value of said field?
Is it the case that this particular field cannot be restricted for certain reasons?

Any ideas/help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Project 2007 SP 2 integration with TFS 2008 SP 1

I was working fine with project 2007 SP2 and TFS 2008, but after I update the field mapping I'm having a big problem when I try to add task from tfs to project, the task are added but only the title information. All the other fiels that were supposed to get like the title, are white without any value.
Is this a bug? How can I fix this problem?

auto create a link to a word doc

I would like to customise a Bug WI so that on creation it shows a http link to a Word doc on a file server. The user can click on the link to open up the doc in Word. If it is the first time then the doc is auto created on the fileserver. The user can edit the doc and save it. Other users can click on the WI link and do the same

So the link field should be:-
Read Only
auto generated
a clickable link something like

http://www.company.com/fileserver/TFSBugDoc?id=bugID (where BugID is the ID of the WI)

Is this possible out of the box or will I need C# magic.

Changing reportable attributes for existing Process template

Hi all,

I'm trying to change the 'reportable' attributes of several fields on an existing Process template from 'detail' to 'dimension'. When I try and upload the Process template, it gives me the following error:
"Actual reporting settings for the field MyCustomType.MyCustomField are different from those specified in the XML. Changing these settings is prohibited."

I've seen a couple of posts that seem to refer to TFS 2005 around this - is there any way to do this in TFS 2008?

And then use Create Copy of Work Item to copy a WI from one type to the other.

will the new field be copied if it has exactly the same REFNAME in both WITs

We have a request to add a columns to the LinksControl in TFS. However, it appears this will not be available until TFS 2010.

Am I accurate in this assemsement, or is there a way to modify it in TFS 2008?

I have created a customized template that contains work items such as bug, Change request etc. and have used it for a few projects to track those Work items. However, I have made a few changes to the work item in one such project and have made changes to change request work item form. I would now like to update this particular form (change request work item) into the original customized template.

So what I have done is:
I have downloaded the original customized template into my local system and replaced the original change request.xml file with the new one (with the same name). But it is showing an error when I upload the template again to the central location for availability for other projects. I have also tried changing the template name and upload the whole template with a new name. Still the problem persists. I am not able to upload the template containing the new customized change request work item.

Work item templates are also gone.

Hello everybody,

I never could understenad the workflow of a work item and how to customize it? How can I build transitions and states etc.?
Is a guide out there that would make it a little bit easer to use with the power tools?
I really don't have a clue what does what in the workflow diagramm.

Hi

I have added a field to CMMI Bug called Developer. My goal is :-

Bug cannot transition be Active unless Developer has a value.
AssignedTo automatically gets a copy of Developer when transition ->Active

I have not found a solution that works exactly as specified above. Always seem to bump into some weakness in the workflow capabilities

I can achieve the following (with a Proposed Bug):-

1) If the user enters Developer, Saves, chooses Active, Saves, then Developer is copied OK.
2) If the user enters Developer, chooses Active, Saves, then the Developer is NOT copied since it is not in the DB.

Is there anyway to fix case 2) ?

Remove 'resolve' from Check-in Action list

Hi All,

I'd like to remove the 'resolve' option in the list where you can choose the check-in action in the Check-in screen for the task workitem. Or, even better, change the order of the 2 available options.

In this article http://www.woodwardweb.com/vsts/000230.html , there is a description of how to remove the resolve option for the Bug workitem. So, I have used the Process Template Editor v1.2 to download the xml for a Task workitem, but the <actions> section described in the article is not there for the Task woriktem (it is for the Bug workitem).

Anyone know how to remove the resolve option or change the order the check-in actions for the Task workitem?

I do not see TFS custom fields (tagged as reportable) in report builder

I am using TFS 2008. In my xml template I have a field created as below:
<FIELD name="Phase Found" refname="MyCompany.Phase" type="String" reportable="dimension">

When using reportbuilder of SQL reporting services, I do not see this list in the fields list of the work item.

The reportable tag was added after we actually implemented and started to use the xml template for registering work items.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi!
I was wondering if it is possible to assign a user or group in our AD to a group in the project when it is created?
For instance; when I create a new project using a specific template I would like the AD group developers to be a member of the Readers group in the project.

I have looked through the documentation for customizing the process template but not found any clues?

I am using TFS 2008 workgroup, SQL server 2005, Windows 2003.

I have created a custom process template to change the document library structure, i follow the below steps:

Create a project using CMMI process template
Customize the document library structure
Save the customized project portal as site template
Add the new site template to the server using the -add template command
Download the CMMI process template
Update the WssTasks.xml with the new site template name
Upload the new process template.

The new process uploaded successfully, but when i try to create a new project using the new process template i got the below error:

The "Download" button is grayed out when I try to download a process templates file. Steps I did: Team - Team Foundation Server Settings - Process Template Manager, the window opens but all buttons (Upload, Download, etc.) are disabled. Is this the permissions issue? Building ASP.NET front end for TFS

Hi

We have been using TFS for about 6 months now and it has been a roaring success! We have a couple of complex SOX compliant Work Items and we have code that handles work item changes etc.

Our Operations teams now want even more features and control added to the process. However, some of the stuff they want is so specific that I am not sure if they can be done using the TFS development tools (i.e. Process Editor and XML based forms etc). For example, some of the changes they want require complex cross field validation and form level validation of multiple fields, before a Work Item is can be saved.

The users also want changes to the VSTS Web Access tool e.g. as well as search by Work Item #, they want to be able to perform ad hoc searches on fields without having to create a Team Query every time. If you have used Quality Centre then you will know how easy it is to perform ad hoc searches there.

So here is the question ! Has anyone tried building their own ASP.NET front end for TFS? Is there any Microsoft best guidance on this? Essentially, we are thinking about a full blown SOX compliant project/portfolio management ASP.NET front end tool for 5 separate companies that are part of the Banking group that I work for. Down the line, there are requirements for linking into the Bank's SAP Financials system so costs etc can also be fed from TFS.

Any thoughts, help, advice would be much appreciated.

How to dim field after save?

I have a combo box field in my WIT and I want to dim this field or make it readonly after I select a value, whenever the save button is pressed. It should work like the "Reason" field that you cannot change it when the WIT is saved. I have tried the "Required" and "Frozen" rule together, but the field is not dimmed. It just doesnt let you save the WIT if you change the field ("The value for field 'Type' must be empty or the same as the original value.")

I have created a new workItem type.
I would like to have a template in the field :

So I have done :

When I am creating a new WorkItem with my Custom Type I have the field description with Default Text and MultiLMine.
But I have no empty line between them.

Restricting user groups from specific fields...?

I have certain fields on my Bug WIT that I only want certain user groups to have the ability to change values- I have been using;

<READONLY not="[project]\QA Members" />

Using 'QA Members' as an example - this method works well - until I try to add more groups. It seems that I can only use 'READONLY not' once - it will not recognize any other group listed.

Is this case - can only use one group?

Is there a better way to restrict who has access to certain fields?

Any ideas/suggestions/help is greatly appreciated.

Programmable Work items ?

As far as i have read, it appears WIs can be customised to feature different fields, workflow state transitions, and the layout of the form. Are there ways to customise the programmatic process between states? Like for example, creating a new "Review meeting" WI would invoke custom code to interface with a Sharepoint site and create a meeting request item there, send email notifications to relevant parties to attend the meeting. Transition from state to state would arbitrarily would call other web services/APIs, update other data sources, etc.

There does not seem to be anything noticeable about the XML schema definition that caters for these?
