Help for small VSS team moving to TFS 2010 Version Control

Our small team has used Visual Source Safe for years. In Visual Studio, we specify to use VSS and everything is integrated. We have installed TFS 2010 beta 2, and we have both VS2008 Pro and VS2010 Pro beta 2 projects. How do we start using TFS Version Control? Do we need to install anything on the client machines?

Team Foundation Server 2010 Portal Excel Reporting Issues

We have been trying to get TFS 2010 b2 up and running and have had a fair amount of success with most things we have been working through. The portal dashobards are a different story. We are currently getting this error when trying to View a dashboard the following is displayed instead of the report.

Unable to retrieve external data for the following connections:

TfsOlapReport

The data sources may be unreachable, may not be responding, or may have denied you access.

Verify that data refresh is enabled for the trusted file location and that the workbook data authentication is correctly set.

Inspecting the Event Log off the machine with MOSS 2007 installed on it I have the following errors present in the Application Log

Application Server Administration job failed for service instance Microsoft.Office.Excel.Server.ExcelServerSharedWebServiceInstance (1ed6f13c-c587-4598-990d-35d386ed8d4e).

This can't be a coincidence and seems applicable to my issue.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have done so far and their outcome

I have accessed the Excel files from the server and was able to open the files and once I activated the data connection the file displayed the report correctly.
I have verified connectivty from the Moss2007 machine where the Excel calculation services are running to the TFS olap server, and am able to establish connections.
I have verified the Excel trusted paths are configured correctly and working.
I have verified the dashboards can be accessed from the report server and rendered properly which they are.

The dashboard summaries are working fine as well as everything else on the portal it is just the Excel reporting services.

I would prefer not to have to rebuild the whole thing again if I can help it, but am out of ideas, and my googling skills don't seem to be up to the challange.

build controller throws exception every 1 - 2 builds

Strange behavior of the build controller: after 1 -2 short builds (about 4-5 minutes) I get an exception (see below). I have to restart the build controller and then I can do 1 or 2 builds again and the same exception comes again. It seems to be some issue with SSL certificate (but it works few minutes!). I use the same account for the team explorer and everything seems to work. Is it possible to get more information from the log of the build controller? Eventlog shows only some information about start/stop of build agents or build controller and the exception below.

Can't connect to TFS 2008 server from VS 2010

Hi,

I am unable to connect to TFS 2008 server while trying to connect to the Team project in Testing Center in VS 2010 Beta 2. Is it necessary to install TFS 2010?
I have a VS 2008 install on the same machine pointing to the same URL, which is working fine. So am i missing out on something?

What are the best practices for managing configurations when using TeamBuild?

Now that Visual Studio supports multiple configuration files, what are the best practices for doing this in a continuous integration environment?

If I have Development, Staging, and Release configurations, should my build create a staging deployment package and a release deployment package, and I have to choose which package to deploy to which server, or can I have a single deployment package which includes configurations for staging and production, and my deployment tool chooses which configuration to use at the time of deployment?

Most of the tools I've seen still seem to place emphasis on developers doing deployments from within Visual Studio, but this fits badly with TeamBuild and the whole CI process (not to mention my company's deployment practices, where developers aren't allowed any sort of access to production servers, and the Operations team are responsible for deployments - we just give them the deployment packages).

Force Removal of a Team Project Collection

Due to a misunderstanding, I have two team project collections that do NOT have associated SQL Databases, they were accidentally deleted via the SQL Server Management Studio.

Unfortunately, the TFS Server Administration tool still believes those collections to exist. This must be corrected. I need to know how to either recreate a database that the TFS system will accept as valid so I can delete the project collection and re-create it or how to force removal of the entry so I can simply re-create it.

I have already removed the Sharepoint sites.

Error in instalation of TFS (TFS255356)

In TFS Server installation, I get an error when the TFS try to install the Analysis Services database.

TFS 2010 Beta 2: Remaining Work roll up in parent/child hierarchy of work items

Hi, I assumed that 2010 comes with the roll up functionality for hierarchical work items, i.e. if a parent work item has two children then the Remaining Work value (or other time values) for the parent WI is the sum of the same value of the two children items. I have a work item with 11 children. Each child has Remaining Work set to 1 hour (by default). The parent shows 1 hour (instead of 11 hours)! I know that the roll up functionality did not make it into Beta 1 but was in the backlog. Did it make it into Beta 2? If yes, what should I change in my custom templates (or the code?) in order to make it work? Thanks in advance for any help.

I can access all the necessary Sharepoint sites but I can not create a project. I am recieving a TF30172: You do not have permissions to create a new team project. An existing VSIP project was upgraded to 2010 (Windows Server 2003, TFS on the same machine as VS.Net and SQL server 2008). Our custom template gets uploaded without a problem. I managed to successfully create a team project yesterday using this template. Export / Import Wizard of TFS Projects from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010

We have here the following situation:

- TFS 2008 No. 1 is located within a Trusted Active Directory: 11111111.ch - this trust is to the AD: 2222222.ch

- TFS 2008 No. 2 is located within a Active Directroy: 2222222.ch

Our Target System TFS 2010 is located within a third Active Directory: 3333333.com.

So we have here the scenario that we have 2 source systems and one target system. What we will need now

is an option how to run a transfer of all data from both source systems (tfs2008) into one target system(tfs2010).

Please help and advice then all I could find so far is the migration option where I should backup and restore

the tfs 2008 databases - in my scenario this is not possible. Based on what I have read on msdn forum this is
not possible at all for us since we are using SQL Server 2005 and the following blog post this is not supported: http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2009/10/21/upgrading-from-tfs-2005-2008-to-tfs-2010.aspx

This ActiveDirectory stuff is mention here because the Active Directory 333333.com contains an import from
all users in the previous used envrionment. What we are try to reach is that we are able to takeover all history
even if this would mean that we have loos all user based information but the history data should available
after this migration.

Can not open new TEST Project in MS-VS 2010

I installed MS-VS 2010 and worked with test projects several times.
After that I closed MS-VS.Then I open MS-VS 2010 but now the problem is I could not start a new TEST project.... whenever I tried to open a new TEST project I receive an error message saying 'Value cannot be null. Parameter name: path ' .
This is not a build error .
Before I closed MS-VS for the 1st time TEST projects worked successfully.But now...
Can someone help me for work out this ????

I know in 2005 & 2008 the work around was to use a custom task in the msbuild file, but now that the build is workflow based I am looking for how to implement this in 2010? I am really hoping the product team has added a workflow activity that will do this for me :).

TF31002 Error

I'm banging my head up against a wall. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 VS2010. (I have VS2008 installed. Might be issue?) I am getting a TF31002 error all of the sudden in TFSAC. I cant access from web url. I've looked and everything has permissions. App pools are fine in IIS. SQL server Local Network Service has permissions. I've checked forums and tried proxy settings, permissions etc. Heres the error in my event log:

TFS 2010 Build and associated work items - TF42093: The work item could not be updated with build information

Hi all,

After upgrading to TFS 2010 Beta 2 we are noticing a change in how TFS Build associates work items to a build. We have a customized process template, and several of those work item types do not have the Microsoft.VSTS.Build.IntegrationBuild field. When a developer checks in a changeset and associate it with a such a work item, there is a warning in the build with the following message:

C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\TeamBuild\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.targets (1162): TF42093: The work item xxx could not be updated with build information. The field Microsoft.VSTS.Build.IntegrationBuild is not available on this work item.

When looking at old builds on our TFS 2008 server, I notice that those builds also generates these warnings. BUT: The difference is that these work items are still associated with the builds. In TFS 2010, these work items are NOT associated. If I associate a changeset with a work item that has the IntegrationBuild field (Bug for example) everything work as expected on the TFS 2010 server.

I would assume that this is a bug in Beta 2? Even if Team Build cannot update the work item as part of the build, that work item should still be associated with the build.

For a work around, I tried to set the UpdateAssociatedWorkItems property to false when queuing the build, but that did not help.

3. publish changes to tfs2010 in microsoft project
4. close ms project.

TFS 2010 beta 2 services return a 404 error after about an hour

I installed TFS 2010 beta 2 on a 64-bit Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V virtual machine. All worked just fine until about an hour after TFS started and then I started getting a 404 error from TFS Services. When I looked at the Windows Application log on the box, I saw this:

When playing around with TFS2010 Beta 2, I was very disappointed when trying to associated work items with my check-in.
This was still the same old 2005 window, where it was/is not possible to add additional columns or move/order available columns.
To search for workitems you still have to run a query and select the right work item (or search in the result list).
In many cases you know the work item ID by heart and then it would be very simple to enter the ID without the need to run the all work items query which may take very long.
These were all remarks and request that were already made against TFS 2005, so I'm very suprised that these simple but very handy features are still not available in TFS 2010.

Visual Studio 2010 and TFS 2008 compatibility issues

We have recently updated our development enviroment to using Visual Studio 2010. Our TFS-server is still running 2008.
Are there any "well known" compability issues for this combination?

We have ran into a few problems, so far.

1. Our checkin policies doesn't work because power tools 2010 is not ready yet (will be available soon according to http://blogs.msdn.com/bharry/archive/2009/11/18/tfs-2010-power-tools-coming-soon.aspx)

2. We still need a Visual Studio Team system 2008 Test or Suite edition to be able to run unit tests as part of builds. We tried to install VS2010 ultimate on the TFS server, but we were unable to run unit tests. (MSBUILD : warning : Visual Studio Team System for Software Testers or Visual Studio Team System for Software Developers is required to run tests as part of a Team Build).

3. When creating a new build definition in VS Team explorer 2010, the TFSBuild.proj-file is not created. In 2008 we had an option in the 'Project File' tab to create the build-file if it didn't exist. Now this option is gone and the build file is not created at all. Are we doing something wrong, or is this a compability issue? I guess it is an option to create the file manually or generate it programatically, but this definitely makes things more difficult for us.

Have anyone experienced something similar? Or perhaps other compatibility issues using VS2010 and TFS 2008? VS/TE 2010 should be compatible with TFS2008 according to this blog:

TFS Build 2010: The project file could not be loaded. Could not find file 'WebProject.Setup\Notes.Web.Setup.vdproj.metaproj'

When running legacy builds on TFS 2010 Beta 2, using the UpgradeProcessTemplate, we get this error when trying to build a solution that contain one or more setup projects. In TFS 2008/MSBuild 3.5, this would just generate the fllowing warning:

warning MSB4078: The project file "WebProject.Setup.vdproj" is not supported by MSBuild and cannot be built.

But it seems that MSBuild 4.0 try to build this project and fails. If I remove the project from the solution configuration the builds is succesful. But the thing is that we after the compile phase are running devenv for the same configuration to build the setup projects, so we need to have the setup project included in the solution configuration.

Is there some owther work around for this?

InformationNodeConverter class and backward compatibility

We are using the InformationNodeConverter class for several things, one is to create build steps during the build, using the AddBuildStep method. After upgrading to TFS 2010 Beta 2, we get this error when running the builds:

I can understand that the concept of build steps does not really map well to the 2010 workflow implementation, but shouldn't the 2008 API be backwards compatible? What would be the best way to migrate this funtionality to 2010? To rewrite the entire MSbuild task is not really feasible.

Upgrading Path from Beta 2 to Full Version TFS 2010

I assume that there will be a fully supported path to update a live in-use TFS 2010 Beta 2 installation to the full release version when it is available next March? We want to be early adopters of this version but would not like to have to face reloading all our data once the product is released. Are there any details available regarding this process please?

TFS 2010 Beta 2 - Configuration Wizard - Readiness Check Validation Error on SQL Reporting Services HTTPS

- Win Server 2008 R2 (clean)
- SQL Server 2008 Standard (clean) + SP1
- TFS 2010 Beta 2

When running the TFS 2010 Beta 2 Readiness Check validation on the Configuration Wizard (Standard Configuration), I get a SQL Reporting Services Error:

[ Reporting ] TFxxxxxx: SQL Server Reporting Services is configured to require a secure connection, however no HTTPS URL is configured with a valid certificate. Use the Reporting Services Configuration Manager to configure or remove HTTPS support.

When I Run Reporting Services Configuration Manager, I don't see the referenced checkbox (from a few other articles) to un-select "require HTTPS". When I remove the HTTPS URLs, i get the same error. Can't figure out how to remove the SSL Requirement and get past this step to complete my TFS configuration. Please help!

Deleting a TFS collection orphans and locks out source code bound to that collection

I am new to this and I am trying out TFS for the first time. I thought I would try a few things in both TFS & SVN to see if I could break it. I did. It was a little too easy for my liking.

Steps to reproduce

1. Create a collection in TFS 2010 Beta 2
2. Add a VS 2020 Beta 2 project to the collection's source control
3. Delete the collection from the TFS server, or re-install TFS, pretend you had a catastrophic hardware failure.
4. Try to unbind the local VS solution previously bound to the now non-existent TFS collection. There is no unbind option. Getting 404's because the solution is irrevocably bound to a now non-existent TFS collection. That's all I get - 404's. I cannot add it to another source control library.
5. Get angry and wish you would have gone with Subversion instead. How the ____ do I delete those (now broken) bindings without searching for blog posts on how to manually editing every single file in the local solution?

6. Here is how - Re-create a collection with the same name in TFS that the 404 message gave you.
7. Create a team project
8. ok, NOW you can add it to source control
9. Now you FINALLY get access to the unbind option.
10. Tidy up the mess you made on TFS.

I should be able to unbind local source code from a dead-end, especially when I have on-line access to the TFS server it expects the collection to be on and so should be able to ascertain that it is probably not just a disconnection or me being off-line. There needs to be something like "The collection your source-control is bound to is missing. Would you like to unbind your source code from this ?"

If I did not have admin access to the TFS server then I'd be wasting other peoples' time as well as my own. As it was I guessed this solution.

Sorry if this sounds snarky but this ultra-tight coupling between the code and source control is infuriating. So are hacks and work-arounds. Regardless of who broke TFS (me, deliberately in this instance), it should not break my source code. Yes, it still compiles but I am now locked out of it as far as source-control goes (unless I switch to SVN or similar) until I stuff up my day by hacking around this problem. It is occurrences like this that really do break the fragile trust that source control really requires to be an accepted solution. If a rank-amateur like me can break VS / TFS this easily and comprehensively this early in my assessment of it then you can imagine how much faith I have in it already.

Also, for the record, I realise I am doing things here with relationships between source-code and version-control that I really shouldn't be doing. There are obviously reasons that source should be bound pretty tightly to version control. Still, that doesn't give TFS the right to deny me a conscious decision to change things if I am dumb enough to want to do so.

Hello, I just upgraded my 2008 (pre-SP1) databases to 2010 and now I am trying to use the tfsconfig registerdb command to change the name of the SQL server the application tier connects to but I am getting this error:

How to get work items associated with a changeset id using tfs api?

Hi I need to get a list of work items that are associated with selected changesets programmatically. So far I have been able to get the changesets associated with a work item ID using the concept of Artifacts, as well as got the changesets and/or workitems associated with a particular build using :

InformationNodeConverters.GetAssociatedChangesets() and InformationNodeConverters.GetAssociatedWorkItems() respectively.

I am using VSTS 2010 beta 1. Anyone know the solution?

Renamed branch not showing in branch hierarchy tool

Here's the structure of my project -- all of the branching/renaming happened in TFS 2008 prior to being upgraded to 2010 beta 2.

/Trunk

/Branches/SomeBranch - from /Trunk
/Branches/SomeOtherBranch - from /Branches/SomeBranch
/Branches/AnotherOtherBranch - from /Branches/SomeBranch

Now in TFS 2008, /Trunk was originally branched to /Branches/Frob. At a later point, /Branches/Frob was renamed to /Branches/SomeBranch. After then, the other two branches were created off of SomeBranch.

So far so good. Upgrade to 2010 beta 2. TFS correctly identifies all four folders as branches. I using the merge wizard, I can merge to/from SomeBranch and Trunk.

Now when I select Trunk and choose View Hierarchy, I see a box for Trunk but no others. Right clicking the Trunk box and selecting Properties then Relationships, shows Trunk -> Frob.

Also, when I view the relationships of SomeBranch, there's no parent listed in the tree, but both child branches are there.

Something is still referering to the original name of SomeBranch (Frob). So far this just seems to affect the Hierarchy tool as the merge wizard does see the correct relationship.

How can this be fixed so that the relationships show correctly?

How do I build a 3.5 solution with MSBuild 4.0?

Hi,

I've been trying to move one of our projects to TFS 2010 Beta 2 to benefit from the new Agile process template and the Test And Lab Manager without moving to VS2010 yet (since it is missing CF support). The problem is that our .NET 3.5 Compact Framework projects don't build in Team Build 2010. It's complaining about a AddHighDPIResource task that is missing. So apparently, it is looking at the wrong Microsoft.CompactFramework.Build.Tasks assembly.

I've tried the suggestion mentioned here to change the ToolsPath. It did result in the correct msbuild.exe being called, but the .rsp file that Team Build passes along refers to a logging class build using .NET 4.0. As a result, msbuild.exe throws an exception mentioning a class that is built in a newer version of the CLR.
I have no clue how to fix this, but if I don't find a solution or workaround before the end of the week, management is forcing us to go back to TFS 2008.

Excel Reports Not Working - Data Refresh Failed

I have a clean install of TFS 2010 beta 2 with Sharepoint 2007. All of the Excel Reports (based on Excel Services) do not work for me; they are unable to refresh the data connection. When I open the Excel document on the server it is able to connect to the data source fine and run the report. When that same Excel file is on the server it fails. I setup the Shared Services provider in the normal way and gave access to the root path (http://domain/) and allowed children. When I checked the logs I saw an error about using trustedsubsystem for accessing the external data source. Based on the link bellow I changed the ecssecurity to have an access model of delegation...

However, this did not fix the issue. I now get a different error (below). The interesting section says something about "ODC File Uri is not valid".

Failure during upgrade of 2008 databases

Restored all 2008 databases to a new server and ran the upgrade wizard. Ran for about 13 or 14 hours (50GB version control db) and then failed:

This was a trial upgrade so its not a system down issue

I installed TFS 2010 Beta 2 (Basic) on one machine running Windows Server 2008. We don't have a domain set up in our office. TFS seems to have installed correctly, but when I try to access the "Administer Group Membership" or "Administer Security" options in the Administration Console, I get the following error:

Team Foundation Error

Please contact your administrator. There was an error contacting the server.

Technical information (for administrator):

HTTP code 500: Internal Server Error

I checked to ensure that I have administrative privileged on the machine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled TFS to try and get around this problem. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions on how I can resolve this? What server is the the admin console trying to contact? Sorry if these are fairly straight forward issues. I'm fairly new to TFS.

Running Visual Studio Test Elements 2010 against old code

I have to test several VS 2008 based applications. I love the look of the new VS 2010 Test Elements. My question is, do I have to wait to the code/apps are upgraded to VS 2010 before I can start testing them with Visual Studio Test Elements 2010 or can I test VS 2008 based apps?

Custom work item controls - Could not cast from YourType to Ms....IWorkItemControl

I've written a barebones custom control inheriting from Control and implementing IWorkControl. When i create an object in a seperate console application and try to cast it to IWorkItem it works perfectly, but when I try to include the control in the template work Task it just pops up a textbox saying "Unable to cast object of type 'WorkItemMod.DocLinkControl' to type 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Controls.IWorkItemControl'."
So why does my cast work?

My guess is that it seems I'm casting to Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Controls.IWorkItemControl version 9.0 while Team Explorer is casting to version 10.0. So where do I get my hands on version 10.0? It's not listed in the add references-dialog.

I'm running TFS 2010 beta 2 and Visual Studio 2010 beta 2, the assembly is .NET 4.0.
