Apologies, if this has been discussed already or this is already known. I have just installed TFS2010 successfully and most things appear to be working except for the ProcessGuidance information pages, which either return 404 error or are redirected to MS URL. Can somebody please advise if this element should be working and if yes, what my issue could be?

First, we'll need some more information about your specific configuration.
    • What OS is your TFS server running on?
    • What version of TFS 2010 are you running?  (I'm assuming Beta 2 but just want to double-check.)
    • What type of configuration did you perform when you installed TFS?  (Basic/Advanced/etc.)
    • Where is SharePoint currently installed (on the same box or on a different box?)
    • Was SharePoint properly setup before you attempted to create the team projects?
By default, the new MSF Agile v5.0 (Beta 2) process templates do actually use a redirection method for the Process Guidance document library in the team portal SharePoint site.  It redirects to the Process Guidance stored in the MSDN Library.  You can absolutely change that behavior by editing the changing the redirect links or setting at the team project level what URL to use for the process guidance.  To do that, right-click on the team project in Team Explorer and choose "Portal Settings."

     Proposed Answer
There is a bug in the CMMI template for Beta 2 where you sometimes get a 404 error for process guidance. The file that is missing is here:

    Process Guidance\Supporting Files\ProcessGuidance.htm

You can fix this problem by copying the ProcessGuidance.html file from teh Process Guidance folder into the Supporting Files folder (and make sure you use just "htm" for the extension instead of the longer "html" extension). Once this file is present, you should not get any 404 errors. We have fixed this bug for RC.

Additionally, process guidance has been moved to MSDN instead of the SharePoint site, so the various htm files that are in the Process Guidance document library now redirect to the MSDN guidance. You can, of course, change this if you like.

Ed, what is the local link to the process guidance for the MSF Agile process template?

The actual content for the Process Guidance files won't be stored locally. They will only be hosted in the MSDN Library (at least for Beta 2.) You can always change the URL that is set for Process Guidance for any team project. It can be any URL (internal or external.)

Thanks Ed\All for replies to this. However my issues is as per Bob's where I am only running TFS2010 in a development environemnt currently that has no external web access. Therefore how do we go about getting the file locally stored as was the case with Beta1 where the process guidance for both Agile & CMMI was all stored locally?
    Many thanks
    Chris

    Ed,

Sorry just to add answers to your original question around my current set-up...

  • What OS is your TFS server running on? WIN2008 x64 R2 (Virtual)
  • What version of TFS 2010 are you running?  (I'm assuming Beta 2 but just want to double-check.) 2010 Beta2 (Beta1 did contain ProcessGuidance local?)
  • What type of configuration did you perform when you installed TFS?  (Basic/Advanced/etc.) Advanded, as i have my SQL DB & Reporting services on a seperate machine.
  • Where is SharePoint currently installed (on the same box or on a different box?) Sharepoint is on the same TFS machine.
  • Was SharePoint properly setup before you attempted to create the team projects? There where no errors reported and I did set-up all required permissions etc on the Top level site before creating a new project. I have also created other projects since to ensure it was not just a issue with the first one and the same thing happens for the CMMI template eg Just returns 404.
  • Thanks Again

    Chris

As far as Beta 2 goes, the Process Guidance isn't being stored locally and only hosted on MSDN.  I am attempting to check whether their will be an "offline" version available for RTM.

Chris, Microsoft indicated that I should be able to bring up the PG locally from Programs > Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 > Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Documentation. However, I'm getting an error when I try this:
    - 1st: MSHelpListener.exe crashes
    - 2nd: Windows cannot find the help file

    Dose this happen for you?

    Chris,

Try opening the Help Launcher:  Click Start, click All Programs, Click Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, click Visual Studio Tools, and then click Manage Help Settings.

Also, I workign a bug on the MS Connection site - "Launching Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Documentation results in errors."  Here's the latest I have on this -

...we noticed a bug where the Help Library Manager couldn’t access http://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/products on some machines, but it started working fine, if http://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/products was accessed via an internet browser first. (Possible proxy issues) We will investigate and fix this issue for RTM. So, can you please try accessing http://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/products in your default internet browser and then launch Help Library Manager.

With respect to your issue on your Windows XP SP3 box, can you please send me the error details from the Event Log? The below are the two common issues we have seen on Win XP SP3

    -          Port conflict issue discussed at https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=499078

    -          Registry issue discussed in your bug https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=506701
