Locked TFS power tools lock exe file

    Hi,

I work with TFS 2010 and power tools to have the contextual menu in the windows explorer.

I do this simple operations :

    - from visual studio 2010, I get the latest version of a directory containing sub directories and files

    - I open windows explorer and try to delete the previous directory

=> the deletion cannot be done because of a particular exe file that is used by another process

Even when all handles are closed, the only way to delete the file was to reboot the computer first.

After a while, I discovered that to uninstall the TFS power tools resolved the problem.

On 4 computers, 2 of them only have the problem.

Deos someone have already had this weird behavior ?

    R.

    Hi rachelHahn,

    Thank you for your post.

What exe file you want to delete?

For example, you want to delete vshost.exe, but you cannot delete it if the vs is opened. Would you please use process explorer to check the exe file is opened or not.

I hope this information will help resolve this issue.

If anything is unclear, please free feel to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Thanks for your answer.

The exe I want to delete is Project1.exe, this exe is not used or opened by another application. Sometimes it does not appear in process explorer and sometimes there is handles not closed that belong to the default windows explorer. I guess shell extension uses it in background or something like that. But it is not on all exe files and even not on all computers for the same exe...

    Hi Rachel,

I tested your scenario, it turns out the issue doesn't reproduce. You also mentioned 2 out of 4 computers run into this problem, not all. I'd like report the issue once it can be reproduced with detail steps, so please let me know if the issue can be 100% reproduced.

At this time, I suggest you exclude Windows Shell Extension feature during installation of TFS Power Tools.

    Thanks,

    Hi Forrest,

we upgraded to TFS 2011 beta and up to now I didn't have the issue.

Do you have an idea about when will be power tools available for this version ? Tools are very usefull to easily create a backup plan or customize work item templates and so on

    Hi Rachel,

I'm happy to know you like the TFS Power Tools. I don't get information about the Power Tools release plan, however, I think a lot of features in Power Tools will be in next release of TFS. In Power Tools for TFS2010, it's released after TFS2010 released.
