I have installed the MSSCCI provider for TFS 2008. I have installed this to test the use of third party commerical product (Red Gate's SQL Compare) with TFS 2008 for database versioning. This product allowed me to do two things - 1. Script my database objects and store them (as scripts) in TFS source control 2. Script the changes done to database and update the scripts stored in TFS source control (in Step 1) .

I read in one blog that using MSSCCI provider for TFS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 Management Studio / Client tools, I could do same functionality or more. Is that correct? I don't see that integration when using MSSCCI provider for TFS 2008 with SQL Server 2005 client tools. Did I miss something?

Please advise. Dev, Main, & Releases. Dev is for development, Main is the latest stable version, and Releases is for bug fixes to the last released version. When a bug fix that is done in Releases passes QA it is merged up to Main, and then merged from Main to Dev. When merging from Main to Dev it is easy to see what changeset needs to be merged up because it is the only one there and it has the current date. We recently completed work on everything in Dev and were releasing a new version so we merged everything from Dev down into Main and checked in any resolved conflicts. It appears that in doing this however that a changeset was created and it contains EVERY file that was merged down into Main. Most of the files Change says Merge, Branch, and a few say Merge, Edit. Now when a bug fix has beeen merged into Main from Releases and I want to merge the changeset from Main up to Dev I'm seeing 2 changesets to choose from, the one I need to merge up, and the one that was created from the last Release containing EVERY file. Its confusing having this extra changeset here because we're used to interpreting any changesets available for merging from Main to Dev as being bug fixes that need to go up to Dev. Yet here's this one that was created from merging Dev down into Main. I suppose I could merge it back to Dev now but that may create ANOTHER changeset that ultimately would get merged back down to Main when the next release is ready. I guess I'm confused why there is a changeset for merged files. It makes it seem like there is some difference to merge when there is not. My goal is to just have a nice clean list of changesets when I am seeing what needs to be merged up to Dev from Main. Any advice\insight?
Tue, 11 Aug 2009 20:25:41 Z2009-11-23T17:46:25Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/cc0881e2-1114-4e5c-a9ff-30c4f88aea50http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/cc0881e2-1114-4e5c-a9ff-30c4f88aea50Börghttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=B%u00f6rgTFS Power Toys Shell Integration: Automatically check out files on edit
Hi,

we are planning to use TFS at our company for other IDEs than Visual Studio and use the TFS Power Toys Shell Integration for Source Control with TFS.

But we would really need the feature, that a file is automatically checked out for edit whenever any application changes that file. I work for a company which produces a number of different products which share large chunks of code. Over the years we have tried a number of different strategies for managing the shared nature of our code base from isolated component builds producing SDK MSIs using WIX right up to multiple development branches sharing component source code via integration branches.

Whilst each of these solutions has had their own individual pros and cons it has recently occurred to me that TFS workspaces and checked in binaries could go a long way towards simplifying much of the complexity currently inherent in our teams sharing source.

I have read the various branching guidance documents on Codeplex and found them helpful but frustratingly lacking in examples when it comes to managing multiple products simultaneously which share a common set of components. The developer in me tells me encapsulation is a good thing and that a build per component is an elegant way of parcelling up the build effort and freeing products from compiling dependencies managed outside the product, that's the easy bit ;) The harder part seems to be working out how best to share these dependencies between products.

I am currently contemplating getting our component builds to check in their output and switching developers to using workspaces to control where and when products pick up dependencies. However I am unaware of any best practice documentation with respect to storing build output (.dll, .pdb, .wixlib, .msi) in TFS. My fear is that the initial implementation would be fairly trivial however over time the size of the TFS database would increase to such an extent that TFS performance would be affected? I was wondering if anyone has any experience of using TFS in this manner? or has any recommendations with respect the sanity of this approach? Any advice/thoughts/musings would be much appreciated.Mon, 16 Nov 2009 16:35:48 Z2009-11-18T16:18:16Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/cc5779ff-3b51-4b2b-893c-fcde367ac09chttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/cc5779ff-3b51-4b2b-893c-fcde367ac09cSaeed Neamatihttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Saeed%20NeamatiAreas and Iterations is missing in projects context menuhi
I'm working with VSTS and in Team Explorer I want to set some permissions on Work Items and Iterations. 4 developers at the moment.

In reviewing the setup instructions, I noticed a section titled "Installing Team Foundation Server for Small Teams". Under this setup type, there is a note that "You cannot configure reporting or a team project portal if you use the basic configuration." Can someone please give me some detail on what that means? We would not likely use any sophisticated reporting features, but we do need to be able to pull lists of work item assignments, outstanding bugs, etc. Is that still possible?

Basically, I'm having trouble understanding what the reporting service is used for.

Thanks!Mon, 16 Nov 2009 16:11:28 Z2009-11-23T01:20:01Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/7c338b1b-27d2-4788-bcf7-798aae56e385http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/7c338b1b-27d2-4788-bcf7-798aae56e385Michael Bletermanhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Michael%20BletermanSharepoint project portal and central administration are downWe got a seriose problem- Sharepoint applications just refuses to run.All Sharepoint-related features are not accessible : neither project portal nor central administration. We want to use TFS for source control, adding projects etc. but also for Change Management. I saw that there is a possibility to choose a work item as 'change request'. Is that on project level? We want to implement our own software with projects under it. The change requests we want to use are on the level of the total software. For Change Management we also want to make an Impact Analysis and more. How did you implement this in TFS? Or is it easier to keep this in SharePoint?Fri, 13 Nov 2009 12:38:48 Z2009-11-16T10:34:54Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/e106a92b-013c-4c10-91d3-900a8e9f33a9http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/e106a92b-013c-4c10-91d3-900a8e9f33a9Devlife3http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Devlife3Alerts are not being sent in TFS 2010I setup a few alerts in TFS 2010 through web access. However, the alerts aren't being triggered (or sent).
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Wed, 14 Oct 2009 03:12:27 Z2009-11-13T03:27:53Zhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/8fb50c10-48b1-4a31-a0ac-04ff10991b98http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/8fb50c10-48b1-4a31-a0ac-04ff10991b98Callistus Lucienhttp://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Callistus%20LucienChange Management
I have no knowledge of the features of VSTS, not even what it looks like, but my client wants me to look into the possibility of extending VSTS' Change control or management function beyond just code/application changes to IT change management.
