QuestionTFS version control back up is writing 25 GB everyday (\MSSQL\Backups\LNGSEASQLP003\TfsVersionControl)

TFS is installed on two different servers - app server and db server.
In DB server, we are noticing that the backup directory - \MSSQL\Backups\LNGSEASQLP003\TfsVersionControl is containing 25GB backup file everyday (backup file name is: TfsVersionControl_200910282202.LS.BAK). This is happening from last Sunday (10/25/2009).

We are temporarily moving these back up files to some other drive to keep space on this backup drive...

Could someone help to let us know why TFS is writing so much backup everyday ? why this is happening only from last few days... There were no changes to TFS configuration / installation from more than a year (we are applying only microsoft patches ... again, there were no patches applied since one month)...

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks, Srinivas.

    Hi Srinivas,

What is the backup plan in your organization?

Usually, we can perform a full backup every one week, an incremental backup every day .

    Best Regards,
    Ruiz

    Hello Ruiz,
    Thanks for your quick response.
I am quite new to TFS administration. Can you please suggest me how can I check my backup plan by looking at the server?

    Thanks, Srini.

    Hi Srinivas,

When you backup your database with SQL Server Management Stuido, you can find the option.

    Hello Ruiz,
I have verified the existing back-up plan in SQL Server Management Studio.
The backup type is "Full"...  Does it mean everyday it is taking Full backup? How do we set back up plan as "Full backup once every week and incremental backup everyday" ?
Also, we have not changed the backup plan from quite a long time... any idea as why it is filling up space only from last few days (2 weeks)....

Please suggest. I will be glad to provide any info needed.

    Thanks, Srini.

Also, I have few more questions:

    3) We are planning to increase size of the logs drive... what is the best way to do this without having much impact ? We can have a window where we can bring down TFS for sometime.

    4) We are moving the backup files to other drive as of now. Even other drive also is getting full day by day... we have around 10 backup files now (for past 10 days)... do we need to maintain all of them or we can delete the old ones by keeping last 2/3 backup files?

    Please suggest.

    Thanks in advance, Srini.

    Hi Srinivas,

    Sorry for late reply.

Yes, full back-up every day will increase the size obviously, changing the plan will make it slower.

3)I think you can back-up the database to other driver, like removable driver or other network driver.
4)You can delete them if you have one or two most recent full-backup.  That is dependent on your company's  data security strategy.

    Best Regards,
    Ruiz
